No. You can use tap water, bottle, filtered, etc. Distilled water is highly recommended for a few reasons. First and foremost, water has minerals. We cannot see these minerals but they are there. Eventually, these minerals build up in the humidifier and over time cause issues. Also, when the water is misted into your room, the minerals over time create what people refer to as a white dust around the area the humidifier is in. This is from the minerals the water leaves behind on surfaces. Distilled water does not have these minerals, so it is preferred but no you do not only have to use distilled water.
