If your player and TV have special modes and enough inputs, it's best to connect them directly. You may have to find another path for the audio signal. Some players have a second HDMI and some use optical cables or other connections. You may also be able to connect the signal from the tv output to the receiver. Just make sure whatever path you take supports the best surround modes.
