One remote will control your TV & soundbar. You should be able to program your remote to control the DirecTV receiver as well.

I was not able to control this device using my Samsung Smart Remote (for UN70KU6300). it learned the on/off function but would not learn mute or volume up/down.

You can use one remote. I have Directv as well and a vizio TV and I was able to program this sound bar with my directv remote just fine. Although you may need to already have the Directv remote programmed for another audio device cuz this soundbar will learn the code from the remote so it will work with any remote.
