Go to the Yamaha site and read the instruction manual. This unit is typically set up for surround sound. I set up a zone 2 with 6 speakers (2 per room) and fed that into my amplifier. So I can do surround sound on zone 1 say for my cable box with surround sound and set the zone 2 to input the tuner (or whatever ie. internet radio, cd player, etc.) doing two different (or the same) units in other rooms. If you are hooking up only 4 speakers in one room you might want to read the user manual or check with Yamaha support.

Yes, you will have to set it up in the software though. 
May be a bit confusing at first but after a few minutes I was able to make the receiver do what I wanted.

Yes , you can hookup 4 speakers to the main . in addition you can hookup a total of 9 speakers to this model of Yamaha's A/V Receiver RXV685
