Once you have made your choices for various input-types, it DOES automatically switch between Dolby Digital Surround and either ProLogicI or II or DTS or 2CH or 5CH Stereo when the incoming programming changes... E.G. A mono or pure stereo movie will be the latter, while a modern commercial will switch to full surround. Hope this answers your question.

If you have only the speakers to this Bose unit connect the bass unit to your amp according to the Bose instruction provided with your speakers. Reason Bose left right and center separation is accomplished there. Bose is funny that way.
