You are correct that it will be a 1080 signal either way, and yes, you can buy a splitter and send one to the TV, and one to the receiver. But, chances are that you will run into issues with the video and sound not syncing up. I'm not sure why you would want to split the signal at all. It does not give you any benefit, and just adds more signal degradation to the system, because most splitters use very cheap components. BUT, if your cable box is putting out a 4K signal, which would be rare, since the only places offering 4K content are a few subscription services, the receiver will pass that through as a 4K signal, not a downgraded 1080 signal.
