    Synopsis

    Rango
A pet chameleon who has lived his entire life in the confines of a cozy glass terrarium discovers adventure beyond his wildest imagination in this animated Western adventure from Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. When we first meet Rango (voice of Johnny Depp), the sheltered pet chameleon is safe in his terrarium, and embarking on epic adventures through the power of imagination. Then, suddenly, his safe existence is irrevocably upended thanks to a bump in the road that sends him soaring out of a car window and right onto the searing-hot asphalt of a desert highway. On the advice of a wise armadillo who relays the story of the Spirit of the West, our conical-eyed hero sets out in search of a town called Dirt, narrowly escaping a hungry hawk and encountering a self-sufficient pioneer named Beans (voice of Isla Fisher) along the way. Upon arriving in the dusty desert town, Rango wanders into the local bar and convinces the townspeople that he's a notorious gunslinger with a lightning-fast trigger finger. When one of the locals challenges Rango to a showdown on Main Street, the hawk that menaced our hero on his way to town shows up looking for a rematch, and ends up beak-down in the dirt. Convinced that Rango is the real deal, the Mayor (voice of Ned Beatty) decides to name the brave chameleon their new sheriff. But Rango's honeymoon in Dirt is short-lived when bandits steal the town's entire supply of water, and the newly christened sheriff forms a posse in order to get it back. Little do they realize they were all being manipulated by one greedy power-monger who's determined to keep the people of Dirt under his thumb with the help of a diabolical villain named Rattlesnake Jake (voice of Bill Nighy) whose Gatling-gun tail makes Swiss cheese of all challengers. Now, if Rango can just locate the Spirit of the West (voice of Timothy Olyphant) and summon the courage to realize his true potential, perhaps he can finally free the people of Dirt from the tyranny that binds them, and discover his true destiny under the scorching desert sun. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Excellent film for animation lover AND movie buffs

If you love old westerns and movie references you'll really enjoy "Rango". It is loaded with loving tributes to everything from 'High Noon" to "Apocalypse Now". You'll especially notice a homage to the plot of "Chinatown". It's just a lot of fun to watch several times to pick out and enjoy the references. The animation is absolutely first rate, some of the best I've ever seen, with amazing details in both the foreground and background. Once again, it's worth watching over and over to pick out different details. Although I've only seen it in Blu-ray and cannot speak for the DVD version. My one bit of advice though would be that even though it's an animated film it may not be as enjoyable for small children. It's a bit dark in tone at times, some of the characters are physically a bit scary looking, and the pace may seem slow to younger viewers. It's not Kung Fu Panda (which I also love) but it does reward young viewer patience with a terrific and funny performance by Johnny Depp as the title character.

Opening with a bang, and pacing the laughs perfectly, Rango balances a fun and gritty feel throughout. Overflowing with a talented voice cast and unique character design, we are treated to a truly creative experience. Action and spectacle are not absent; they are delivered with immense energy and grace. Aerial acrobatics and lunacy surround a fantastic chase sequence delivering some of the film’s most entertaining moments. A classic predator and prey setup ends with cliché yet welcome results, and the climatic stand-off between hero and villain may be slightly predictable, but is a fun and fitting pay-off nonetheless. Rango is a major accomplishment; filled with creativity, beautiful animation, and an amazing cast of voice talents. Make no mistake, this film is meant for all ages to enjoy, and will leave you in awe. -THS

      Rango’s Evolution?

Rango centers around a talking lizard whose life is turned upside down both literally and metaphorically when his living habitat falls out of his owners’ vehicle into dry desert land. Rango is shown to have an understandably hard time accepting what is going to happen as he improvises his acting and pretending that he is part of some story. His preference towards story-telling and imagining is actually harmless until he is forced to adapt to another area and leads the town residents to believe that he is actually more violent than he is. Complicating matters further, Rango moves to an area populated by animals at a time where residents are grappling with water shortages, which is going to make Rango’s adjustment to his new life even more challenging than normal.

I had never heard of this movie until I found it at Best Buy. I looked it up online and saw it got some good reviews so I picked it up. I am glad I did. The Blu-ray quality is excellent and the story line is very good as well. Rango is a chameleon who becomes becomes sheriff of a desert town. The characters include a rattlesnake, a Gila monster, a tortoise and other desert animals. Amazingly the plot is as good as the animation and the story works very well. I am a fan of classic westerns and I really enjoyed this movie. It took me a few minutes to get comfortable with the idea of a western told with animated animal characters but once I did I enjoyed this movie.

The animation was top notch, but I found this film to be just "odd", for lack of a better word. I was entertained enough while watching, and enjoyed the nods to some classic westerns, as well as "Fear and Loathing..." and even "Mad Max". But overall, it's just sort of all over the place. And Johnny Depp's performance seemed to be channeling his previous portrayal of Hunter Thompson just a bit too much for me to be able to connect with the main (albeit animated) character. Recommended with reservations, only if you enjoy Depp's more peculiar characters.

This is not the typical "rainbow bright colors" type of animated movie that are there as a buffet. This one has a different taste, another flavor from the bunch. I am not saying the buffet of animated movies available are bad (I enjoy and love many of them), however, It taste good sometimes new flavors, new directions, a different approach. Def, you can see Johnny Depp as Rango. It is the type of imaginary world I can see him in. I was surprise how little kids can enjoy this movie. I really think this is a great movie for friends and family.

I admit this was just an impulse purchase. I had seen the movie before and enjoyed it so much once I saw that this was on sale, it was a rather easy decision. This movie maybe skews toward slightly older audience, while remaining very funny and entertaining. The visuals are stunning and even in DVD are impressive. The voice acting is also top notch, with Johnny Depp's titular character charming the whole way through. If you want a quality animated movie that isn't your typical kid's fare, I highly recommend Rango.

I am a single father (48 years young), my son is 13 and we loved this movie. I bought it for him as a gift for getting good grades in school and he chose this movie as his reward, I had only seen previous parts of the movie, but seeing the entire movie was a treat, he was right, very good movie. A great movie for families who want a break from most of the garbage on TV, great for Friday night Movie night, get your popcorn and soda ready, you're gonna love this movie!
