This is Metallica's 4th studio album, first without Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted's first. To metal and Metallica purists this is not their best, that would go to Master of Puppets. I do agree that Puppets was AWESOME, but this disc has some of the most punishing heaviest riffs that the 80's offered. The first track, Blackened, is about mankind raveging mother earth and not taking care of her. Track 2, the title song is a 9 minute opus with a beutifully orchestrated acoustic guitar(s) intro that blast into a crazy time change and has some of the best giutar work on the album. Eye of the Beholder is a mean bruiser. One is probably the biggest song from this album. It gave them their first music video and radio hit. It is a war themed song and was written about a WWI-based movie. Shortest Straw is a fast paced song with An excellent solo section and good use of the english language in the lyrics. Harvester of Sorrow starts with heavy drum toms and chunky guitars until the guitars qiut and a littlew drum solo starts the heaviest riff of the album. Track 7, Frayed Ends Of Sanity has a cool intro circa the 7 dwarves, ow wee ow...ow ow. Track 8 is a 9 minute plus instrumental that the late Cliff Burton helped write and is one of Metallica's finest songs in my opinion, ever. Track 9 Dyers Eve is the fastes song on the album and is about a young child's grip with losing thier parents. The dics is over 65 minutes but flys buy in what seems only 30. So go and get this if you don't have it, it won't dissapoint.

    The Ultimate One

This album pushed Metallica into the forefront of Metal Music with their first ever MTV video of "One". I happened to be watching the night it premiered and was blown away by the powerful message attached through use of clips from a movie based on a Truman Capote book, "Johnny Got His Gun", which was a required read from my high school days. The message of what can happen to our men and women in the armed forces is very strong and still has importance, especially when we still have troops fighting around the globe. I purchased the Album, back when you could choose vinyl, and listened closely since I had not been a heavy Metallica fan until that point in my life. I found this band to be one of the most musically talented not only in playing, but in writing. The lyrics are as important as the music. Plus I really got a kick out of hearing the marching theme from "The Wizard of Oz", when the goons of the bad witch are marching through the castle on their way to destroy Dorothy. I had always loved hard rock, but this foray into real Heavy Metal made me appreciate the genre more than I thought I ever could.

...And Justice for All was the last of the great thrash albums from Metallica before their legendary one 3 years later. On this 1988 release, my favorite songs here are Blackened, ...And Justice for All, Eye of the Beholder, One, Harvester of Sorrow, and The Frayed Ends of Sanity. I also like James Hetfield's angry vocals on this tape too, they were once laughable when I first listened to this CD several times. This is one of the several excellent albums, for a great collection, get this with Master of Puppets, Black album and Ride the Lightning to have the Metallica classics!!

    Very Heavy/Dark album

Truly an album that is a must have for any Metallica fan, as well as for those that want a classic '80's metal album. Absolutely no complaint on material, although I don't quite care for the quality of the sound recording. the trembles are a little too high and the bass (guitar, drums, etc) seems to be heard and not felt. Great collection of material from a band that has earned it's place in metal history

The 1st and 2nd track in AJFA is Blackened and And Justice For All with ripping guitar solos and insane drums. The 5th track has a memorable solo and dark riff towards the end of the song. Just buy the album if you're a metal/Metallica, it's great.
