Seth MacFarlane stars as sheep farmer Albert Starks, a nice guy who hates the old West and who as the movie opens gets dumped by his girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfried) after he chickens out of a gun fight. Louise takes up with the insufferable Foy (Neil Patrick Harris) who runs the local moustachery. The lonely Albert runs into Anna (Charlize Theron), the runaway wife of mean gunfighter Clinch Leatherwood (Liam Neeson), who takes him under her wing and trains him to fight the inevitable duels, first against Foy and then against Clinch.

    Funny Movie, But Crude

My son and I love this movie. There are some clever and original laughs in this movie. We have seen it twice in the theater and now own it on Blu-ray. Be warned though, and this is my disappointment with the movie, the language is terribly crude. The jokes would be just as funny without the language, so I cannot see why the language has to be so blue - throughout the movie. With that said, it is still funny. It's just a shame that often you find yourself noticing the language more than the joke.

I'll preface by saying that I went into this movie expecting to hate it - I did not like Ted, and I typically do not enjoy movies that engage in what is the usual humour displayed here. But. I watched Blazing Saddles as a kid multiple times. This is as if someone took Blazing Saddles, right down to the campy opening credit music (and title-drop theme song!), and modernised it. It's absolutely hilarious from start to finish - and make sure you keep watching for an extra scene at the end!

Seth! Thanks for the fun. Since Ford shot his westerns in Monument Valley, the sacred word has always been that the location is totally played out and can never be used again in films, especially western movies as there is no new way to shoot the location that has not been done before! Well, Mr Expert, Seth MacFarlane, master of the 'common conscience', found a way to make it look fresh and exciting. Those mountains of rock never looked better. Thanks, Mr MacFarlane. Long may you wave.

Some Good Jokes, Some Not So Good... But Fun

This comedy has, in the tradition of MacFarlane's humor, some very good jokes, some jokes that miss the target by a mile, something that's just, "eh" (like a scene with a rattlesnake that really has no payoff). But in the end, the movie is a fun romp in the Western arena worth to give it a try. The Blu-ray is very nice, crisp, sounds amazing (I would have been surprised if otherwise) and it features the Theatrical Feature (which I recommend) and the Unrated Version (again, meh...).

I can remember telling my dad there was no way I wanted to see this in the theater. It was on sale, and still had the cover sleeve so I got it. Amusing. Entertaining. Probably good I skipped it before because I would have spent more to get it earlier. I watched the unrated version because it was there... but that means I have no idea how the theater version is for younger family members, or in general for that matter. 3.75 stars

If you like Family Guy or Westerns you will likely enjoy this. I will watch just about anything with Liam Neeson, but I wish they had picked anyone other than Charlize Theron. Seth MacFarlane (Albert Stark) is a sheep farmer who is later accompanied by Charlize Theron (aka the most annoying female actress ever) and Amanda Seyfried plays his wife. Who cast the females in this movie? All in all it's ok, but I think Olivia Wilde would have been a better choice. The only thing that could make this movie's female casting worse would be if they had cast Megan Fox in a role. Bad casting in some places, but funny in places. I'd give it 3 stars for the overall humor and for Liam Neeson being awesome as always. MacFarlane was funny also. Humor trumps annoying, but the two main females lead women were irritating. Theron and her tough acting roles are not believable to me. There are so many great actresses to choose from. Why do boring blah actresses keep getting work? All in all it's ok. Minnie Driver would have been great! Anyone but Theron. I also immediately thought Seth was playing an ancestor to Tony Stark (aka Ironman) for some reason. He's a funny guy.

If you're a Family Guy or Ted fan, this movie shouldn't disappoint. Seth's trademark push-the-envelope-of-god-taste style of comedy is front and center in A Million Ways to Die in the West. This is a comedy that leaves no topic sacred and is good for many laughs out loud. And the performances by the a-list cast are spot on. This movie pokes fun at old-time westerns yet still maintains the old-time western feel. Enjoyable if Seth is your cup of tea.

The clever humor, the acting, and the plotting far outweigh the occasional gross parts. A movie with lots of laughs, twists, and not one boring moment is my idea of a movie worth watching. This is especially important if you're an aspiring writer learning story structure. Some professional critics said mean things about this movie because, IMO, they were madly jealous of the writers.
