An Irish writer named Siobhan Dowd, was at work on 'A Monster Calls' while she was fighting cancer. She didn't live to finish it. Patrick Ness wrote the book & Jim Kay illustrated it. This movie is a loving adaption of the book. In the book and the movie a Yew Tree (or Tree of Life) is a big part of the story The 'World Tree' is one of the oldest symbols of the mystical union of human and nature. Check out picture of a real one below.

monster films that are enjoyable come and go as this film shows us friendship trials good evil and all the things that make a good movie the development of sci fi monsters and there appearances sometimes makes a like able story or the more hideous a monstrosity to see but overall monsters where made to be monsters

I was expecting A monster Calls to be a movie about a child who overcomes adversity with the help of his friendly monster. From the previews I wasn't sure if the monster was supposed to be real in a fantasy adventure sort of way, or just an imaginary friend for moral support. What this movie is really about: is how a child deals with the pain of having his single mother grow increasingly sick from cancer. It is well done, and a good story (hence my 4 star review). It is just not at all what I was expecting. It is a PG-13 movie with themes concerning bullying, parenting, anger management, and family sickness.

Liam Neeson stars (voices) as the main character in a film that is entertaining, a little frightening and a lot sad. It's the story of a young boy who is dealing with school bullies and his mother's battle with cancer. One night he is approached by a giant monster who tells the boy 3 stories that relate to his life in ways the boy doesn't expect. The movie is sad throughout, may be to intense for young viewers but is a very well done movie. By the time the film ends the young boy finds ways to overcome the bullies and learns he can deal with tragedy.

"A Monster Calls" is a movie that brings to mind the days you remember lying awake at night and and wondering if the "boogie man" is real. Yet, in this case, it is a young boy's mindful creation to survive a less than ideal reality. It did not leave me with an uplifting spirit but a healthy respect for what someone can do to live on.

I wasn't sure about this movie when it first was released. But I saw the score on IMDB and gave it a shot. It was well worth it. The story is well written and moves along briskly, the special effects (the tree monster) are enjoyable, and, ultimately, it is a story of dealing with life's tragedies in a poignant fashion.

I bought this movie on the recommendation of my wife who had read the book- I was definitely not disappointed. A Monster Calls is a phenomenal story of loss and humanity that is lifted to greater heights by the visualization of a child's imagination. It's beautiful, it's heart wrenching, and I'm happy I bought it

Without ruining the movie, it's definitely a good look inside how humans process (or not) grief, the inexorable turning of time, and the onset of changes - whether we want them or not or whether they will better us or not. And, it also shows, that no matter what life throws at us, the fine line between adversity and growth always falls back to the most "human" concept of all: choice. Have tissues handy throughout.

This was not at all what I / We had expected. The movie was excellent, the acting was Superb. I would not let young children or ANYONE who is going through the stages of loss or grieving watch this alone. This is the first time Sigourney Weaver has created a character, whom I did NOT like. That show how good an actress she really is. Spoiler alert: The Butler DIDN'T do it (this time). :o)

This is a very entertaining and a very emotional movie, this is something we all fear at any age, without thinking straight at that moment, and in cases we need someone to let us think and reflect about what is really happening, a lesson to learn for this boy and a movie you have to see it.

Great Animation, with great action adventure. Actors have all received numerous awards, and do a great job. Animation really scares you, and has a great story, too. Mostly a children's movie, but very entertaining for adults, too. I'd recommend this movie ao any age, but especially for kids.

Comparisons can easily be made between A Monster Calls and Pan's Labyrinth--it's true that the film hits a lot of the same notes, but that isn't a bad thing. It builds on the mature fairy tale slant seen in the latter and adds its own unique spin. Worth the low cost of admission.

Taking serious tones and giving them light fantasy elements is always difficult to pull off (I'm looking at you "Lady in White"), but this gives a refreshing look at the trials of childhood in the contemporary world. (also, this is nothing like "lady in White", it was just a reference)

A Monster Calls is a brilliant perspective on children and their coping mechanisms in times of sorrow. This film is beautifully directed and superbly adapted from the novel in which it's based! The acting is phenomenal. This film will have you reaching for the Kleenex!
