Bought this album cause Sturgill had been grouped a few times with other songwriters that are faves (Jason Isbell & Chris Stapleton). First play or two didn’t grab me as much but over the months and with more listens, this is a super album. Just super.

Sturgill Simpson simply dazzles on his latest album! The opening track, written as a letter to his recently-born son, is a standout and an amazing entry into Simpson's world. What follows next is a journey thru psychedelia, stories told in dive bars from old sailors, and recollections of homesick soldiers, all filtered thru a fantastic voice with echoes of early-era Randy Travis. Buy it.

This CD reminds me of a throwback to the seventies. Its not really country and more of a rock album. The sounds on this disc is something that would have fit in to what music was 40 years ago. I think it is labeled country but it has alot of influences and is hard to categorize it. What ever you want to call it its different but oh so good. A must buy

I got into Sturgill Simpson recently with his superb 2014 album Metamodern Sounds In Country Music. This, his new offering is another solid effort from one of country music's best artists. A lot more experimental than its predecessor, mixing outlaw country with soul for a great and very different album. Highly recommended for all fans of outlaw country music and soul as well.

Enjoyed this cd in it's entirety. The recording and production are flawless! I am Looking forward to seeing Sturgill Simpson with the Willie Nelson Outlaw Music Festival this summer. I stumbled upon this CD and purchased it based on the cover art. The music exceeded my expectations!

"A Sailor's Guide..." is one of the best albums of the last ten years. Country with some Rock and Funk fusion. The album is love letter to the artist's son about love, growing up, and trying to do right by others but still enjoying the ride.

First Chris Stapleton and now Sturgil Simpson. After losing a couple of our true country legends lately maybe we have found some guys talented enough and with their heart in the right place that can keep real country music alive.

This is a departure in style from his first two CDs. Sturgill has a voice rich in character and emotion & it is richer than ever on this album. Every song is good. It has quickly become a favorite of mine.

I had heard about this artist, but never actually listened to him. What a pleasant suprise. This recording is very well produced. The sonics are great. Bloom sounded like a completely different recording than the original

Incredible music combing country rock, jazz and blues. A Sailor’s Guide To Earth was written—beginning to end—as a letter to his first child who arrived during the summer of 2014.

I have no idea what genre this album would fit in... it has hints of eclectic, blues, rock, with a hint of disco-ish jams. Something old, something new and some bits of blues!

Had read about Sturgill Simpson and so when he won a grammy thought I'd get this CD. Folksy, country, southern rock. Couple of songs dedicated to his young son. Great lyrics.

This is the exception. Good songwriting. Some of the songs really rock and there are some great ballads mixed in. The Nirvana cover is my favorite on the album.

Sturgill Simpson consistantly produces amazing music that uses country style as the framework. He then embellishes his songs with rock and psychedelia. What a delight!

A startling album, in both scope and content. Extremely well done, and the only thing that would make you think country is his Hag like drawl.

The songwriting is strong and the sound is great. I love the Horns and Strings. I would strongly recommend this. Country sound with a mix of R&B.
