First, a few things need to be cleared up on the specifications for this laptop:
1) The correct model of processor is listed, however the i7-9750H is actually a 9th generation Intel processor, not 10th generation as listed and the label on laptop says as much.
2) The laptop is listed as having 3 USB 3.1 type-C ports. This is incorrect as it has 3 USB 3.1 type-A ports and the only type-C port is Thunderbolt 3 (which is backwards compatible with all previous generations of USB revisions).
3) The dedicated graphics card memory is actually 8 gigabytes, not 8 megabytes as listed (8 megabyte graphics cards have not been in production for over 20 years). Also, the graphics card is an Nvidia GTX 2080 Super with Max-Q which is not listed on the specifications page. Although you would find this in the Q & A section.
4) What is not listed is that the monitor is 144hz and is Nvidia G-Sync compatible.
Now onto the rest of the review. After having it for over a month I am mostly satisfied with the purchase. I have no issue running most games on ultra settings even on 4k such as Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 with a consistent frame-rate. Gears 5 on all ultra settings with 133% super-sampling usually runs in the 80-90 fps range with some dips into the 50-60 range. Without super-sampling there is a negligible boost to performance if any at all and all it will do is make the game look a bit nicer. When not under heavy load the laptop is nice and quiet with some really nice airflow. Acer has designed their own proprietary fan design that is supposed to move a lot more air more efficiently than most standard fans that laptops have today. It does seem to do the trick though. Under max fan settings they will run around 4700rpm for the CPU, and 6300-6800 for the GPU and possibly higher than that. The built-in program PredatorSense gives you the ability to adjust fan speeds and make profiles for your RGB keyboard and overclock the GPU as well. The CPU has dynamic clocking depending on thermal conditions and system load and as of now I am not aware of a way to fine-tune to my liking but it seems to work well. Clock speeds as recorded by the OS go over the 4 gHz range frequently.
The sound quality from the laptop is about what you would expect from most laptops and is really nothing to write home about. I normally run my audio out to a Bose Soundlink speaker which sounds decent. Using the WavesMaxx Audio app to adjust the EQ I cannot really hear much of a difference. Perhaps if I run in into a home theater system I may hear more but that is not available at this time. The PredatorSense application allows you to adjust some EQ presents that WavesMaxx has such as "Gaming FPS", "Music", etc and actually seem to work.
The resolution of the monitor is limited to 1920x1080 but you have options such as HDMI (revision unknown, possibly 2.0) or DisplayPort (revision unknown as well, possibly 1.4). I am unsure if the Thunderbolt 3 port has enough power to drive an external monitor as I do not see a monitor symbol nearby the port and I do not have a monitor to verify this. This laptop can easily output 4k and works well with all the games I've tried. My TV maxes out at 60hz so I cannot test if it is able to run up to 4k/120 but it can do 2k/144 easily. Also, the monitor has a 3ms response time which is very nice and does not ghost very much.
What is not listed is that this laptop has Killer DoubeShot pro built in for both wireless and gigabit ethernet. This gives you the ability to kill non-essential processes that are eating up memory and bandwidth to try and make your online gaming experience more smooth/faster.
I had to take a star off for being extremely unfriendly for the end-user. In order to get to the Nvme drives and RAM you need to take out the entire motherboard and detach everything from it which to most people is not something they are willing to risk doing to a laptop that costs near $3000. Acer basically kind of took an Apple style approach to designing this machine. You will likely either have to contact Acer to upgrade it no doubt for a hefty cost, do it yoursel, or go to a professional that is willing to do it because you run a very real risk of causing permanent damage just to change/upgrade internal storage and/or RAM. A competing model of MSI is very user-friendly and makes it easy to upgrade internal components. Had I known this ahead of time I may not have bothered purchasing it because being able to change out my own components is essential to me and I do not want to risk causing damage to it.
Also, with the cost you are putting up you would think that Acer would give you a license for Windows 10 Professional. Instead you have to cough up the extra $100 if you wish to upgrade it and it comes with a LOT of bloatware installed. If you are strictly gaming, get rid of just about all of it.
Overall this is a fine and powerful laptop with a few quirks but its very nice to use. Bestbuy messed up the listing and left some things out of it so do your research before purchasing anything from Bestbuy.
I would recommend this to a friend
