Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the M17 17.3" Gaming Laptop's impressive performance, stylish design, and lightweight build. Many appreciate its fast SSD and large screen size, ideal for gaming and everyday use. However, some users note that battery life could be improved, and the laptop may generate noticeable heat and fan noise during intensive use. While some found the speakers underwhelming, the overall positive feedback highlights its strengths as a powerful and portable gaming machine.

    Hated it

I originally bought a preowned Razer, loved it but wanted bigger. I went with this Alienware and hated every minute of it. So many interconnected and conflicting Dell apps. I’ve never felt such a hot laptop. Fans can only be controlled by Dell software; I tried three other 3rd party apps, not compatible; it’s Dell control or no control. Tobii is cool but can’t do Windows Hello with Dell and is therefor useless. There’s plugs in the back to save desk space, cool right? Except the side ports are so low to the desk, you need to tilt the computer back to properly grip a USB to plug/unplug. When I added an extra nvme drive, I learned that the bottom case cover screws could be loosened a bit and then the side ports (LAN, USB) behave like a normal PC i.e. you don’t have to knock things off your desk trying to get the ports to release their plugs. Then, when matlab started stalling with 16 GB of RAM (which depending on your stage of code experimentation can happen with any computer), I found out the RAM is not upgradeable. That was it, nope, I took it back and decided it would be worth the 10 day delivery for a 17” Razer.

Great PC but heavy laden with OEM software

The PC works very well. Setup was straightforward. I've had issues as it is simply loaded with OEM software from Dell that at times causes pauses in the execution of process. I do not game with it so I am not sure if that can be avoided. I have allowed the OEM "security, health" stuff to run. But for a gamer, you might want to take more control over what is loaded up front. However, I am happy with the purchase. True test is lifespan and I cannot comment on that although my previous dell dies in less than a year. So we shall see.

Being a techie, I will always do alot of research before making a purchase like this. This unit has high end performance at a reasonable price. No, it's not cheap, but value-packed and a strong performer!! Great bang for the buck!! Only (and I mean ONLY) con found is that it has no SD-card slot so a USB card reader is a simple solution.

Ran Assassins Creed origins at ultra high settings and this laptop ran smooth without even getting over 60 degrees F. Can customize every key into a different color according to specific game and has great overclock presets. Motherboard is soldered but with the graphics card in it, it’s pretty well future proof, at least for a few years.

I have had this for almost a year. This is my first gaming computer, and I am not technically able to build my own (I have the knowledge, but fingers don't want to co-operate). I play mainly MMOs (not FPS) and I am in love with this computer. It is probably not perfect, but it is perfect for me.

Bought to use with the Rift S VR goggles. It works great. Only thing that I wish you could do is upgrade the ram but it is not possible because the ram is soldered onto the motherboard. I did add a second 1 terabyte drive because the Oculus software alone takes up 10gig.

    Absolute worst laptop

This is the worst laptop I've very had. It's got a nice slim design and looks good but the performance and support is horrible. The laptop constantly overheats, even doing normal web browsing, and if I decide to play a game or anything, it gets so hot it's hot that it can burn my fingertips. The adapter doesn't stay connected, even after having it replaced, and the power cord will just slip out with the slightest movement of the laptop. I've had 5 technicians come out and one them even commented on the overheating issue and said that the heat is damaging my internal components and then commented how it's was discoloring the casing because in essence, it's burning it.

Loving the new laptop and its speed. I use it for real time rendering. Gaming laptops have many of the same features as specialty computers at a much better price. I didn't know how much I needed a new laptop until I started using this one.

I bought this as an open box item. I had to return it for another ad the original one would not boot. The Alienware M17 is a very nice laptop. High performing Intel chip. RTX video card and 16 gb memory. It can handle any game out tight now.

Wanted a good computer for work and this one was on sale. It's a great computer. The only not so good thing is the fact that the battery dies within 4 hours. Other than that it was a great purchase so far

This is a great laptop, just don't use it unplugged and for video chat. I found less than 2 hours of battery life when unplugged. Otherwise I thought it was great but battery is the point of a laptop.

      pmessana,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear that your computer's battery is not lasting as long as you hoped it would. We'd recommend the following tips to help your battery last longer:

      Change the Power Plan:

      1. On the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Battery icon.
      2. On the options list, click Power Options.
      3. Select a power plan on the battery meter, such as Power Saver or Balanced. Windows 10 has a built in 'Battery Saver' mode that can be activated to extend your system's battery life. The Battery Saver mode will monitor and limit background activity and other features such as push notifications. You do have the option to enable or disable this mode within settings or within advanced Battery Saver settings, you can customize the mode to best suit your needs.

      a) Click on the Action Center icon in the taskbar and select the tile for Battery Saver.
      b) If running Cortana then type Battery Saver into the search box and select from the results.
Within the Battery Saver settings page, you will be able to turn on and off the feature and customize the feature to best meet your needs.
      c) Turn Battery Saver On or Off.
      d) Additional settings available via the Battery use and Battery saver settings links.
      e) Battery use shows further info on apps and their power usage.
      f) Battery Saver Settings screen allows you to customize further Battery Saver feature.
