Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the M17 17.3" Gaming Laptop's impressive performance, stylish design, and lightweight build. Many appreciate its fast SSD and large screen size, ideal for gaming and everyday use. However, some users note that battery life could be improved, and the laptop may generate noticeable heat and fan noise during intensive use. While some found the speakers underwhelming, the overall positive feedback highlights its strengths as a powerful and portable gaming machine.

This thing is a beast! I have a very powerful desktop and just got this for gaming when I don’t feel like sitting at my desktop. I mostly play controller games with this such as fifa and rocket league. Have played COD and Apex normally and used the keyboard. Felt great. Any questions just ask

I got this as a replacement gaming laptop. My prior one kept having issues. This computer works great!!! No lag, great picture, and fast! I play an MMO, so this computer needs to be tough, and let me tell you, it is. I am so glad my other computer quit, so I got to experience this one.

This is my first "gaming" oriented laptop. I've only gamed on desktop PCs and never really gave HUGE bulky 17" "gaming" laptops a second glance. When I came across the M17 "R2" it definitely piqued my interests. This rig in Lunar White looks slick. The build quality out of the box is fantastic. All the white parts of the chassis, save for the keys are covered in a rubberyish/soft touch texture which feels very nice. I hope this coating(?) maintains. While this laptop is a big boy, I've never seen a slimmer 17" gaming laptop. Moving on to one of the best parts of this laptop is the keyboard. Specifically the key travel. It is a PLEASURE to type on. I think I prefer the feel of these keys to the mighty ThinkPad! I may be treading on blasphemy but it is THAT good. I also never had a laptop with a num pad. And I love having it. I use it the num pad ALL the time. I am not into RGB, so the start up of the laptop that does the rainbow dance makes it a bit too flashy for me... but my daughter loves it. And I guess it's not "gaming" if it's not RGB. The (out of the box) static color which the keyboard is set to once it's boot up is preferable to me. I just like the fact that I can clearly see ALL keys in low light. That is more important to me than changing colors. I do change some keys for some games where it makes identifying via my periphery easier. The nice large glass trackpad feels great and tracks VERY smooth. I do have a problem with the cursor jumping to other parts of the screen as I type, but that’s my fault for how the bottom my palm tends to rest on the trackpad. In normal usage of the i7 w/ RTX2070 the laptop runs quiet and fairly cool (using it on my lap to write this and while it is a little warm on the bottom, it’s nothing close to hot). Gaming on high settings on the other hand, will ramp up the fans (but NOT to ridiculous levels) and it will begin to get toasty. Games like Forza Horizon 4 on high settings will get things hot, but not to the point where I can’t keep my hands on the keyboard. I don’t ever have the laptop on my lap while gaming (that is a recipe for disaster). I was getting a constant 72fps on Forza Horizon with ultra high settings on all the elements that make your eyes drool with no slow downs. Drop down some of the settings and the fps climbs. I have read undervolting the CPU could keep the laptop cooler and prevent throttling, but I haven’t yet experienced that in anything I’ve used the laptop for. So I have kept the settings out of the box. The 1080P 144hz screen I thought would be a disappointment, but at this screen size it’s more than acceptable. Colors and temperature out of the box are fantastic. This screen gets bright and vibrant! No Dead pixels and I have not seen any evidence of light bleed. At 144hz games look smooth as silk. Tobii Eye Tracking on the Division 2 was pretty cool and changed the dynamics of how I played the game unlike anything I have experienced before. It is a cross between 3rd person shooter/fps/VR as the screen can move based on head movements as well as your eyes. But the gaze to aim needs more work. I'm looking forward to trying more games with this feature. Battery life is around 4 hours with some usual browsing with some streaming going on in the background. Start playing a game on battery…. You start to see some serious drainage... like seeing the needle on the gas gauge inch down everytime you push the accelerator. It seems like the best use for the battery is only keeping the M17 alive while transporting it in standby/sleep mode. You’re almost always going to want to have this beast plugged in. A laptop this size would have benefited from a few extra USB C ports on the sides. It is just an inconvenience to have to reach to the back to pop in my USB C 2FA stick into the one and only USB C port to have to log into certain sites I use regularly. But My biggest gripe with the M17 is the odd exclusion of windows hello camera or even a fingerprint scanner. In the age of FP scanners and facial recog cams manually enter in a PW is a hassle on top trying to remember or keep track of ALL the other passwords to everything else out there. Quite of few reviews have mentioned the disappointment of the lack of upgradability of the memory. Being capped at 16GB as the only option is a bummer, but not a deal breaker. I don’t edit or transcode video or anything that intensive that I need even 16GB of memory. I'm happy to have the buffer that it already has. The option to add more memory would have been a welcome addition but I’m not going to suffer due to the lack thereof. Alienware has always been at the forefront of the Gaming scene and they have come out swinging with what I believe is one of the best 17” gaming oriented laptops available today. ‘Mid-range’ specs of this particular model are more than sufficient to handle everything I can currently throw at it. While it won’t be replacing my Surface Pro for work/portability purposes, the M17 may have de-throwned my aging desktop… Until she is resurrected by a refresh.

With a laptop this big, I wish I would have gone with the Area 51 laptop instead. Feels too large to justify the specs that work fine with gaming, though aren’t as good for the game design and visual effects work I do, so I find myself not using this as much as I’d like to unless I absolutely need the portability.

This system has very good performance, the best keyboard ever, and even has a very cool RGB lighting system. It's well built, and basically the more expensive version of the Dell G7 17". Worth it though, in all seriousness. Just a great system.

One of the best gaming laptops made by Alienware with stock 144hz screen. Tried 10 games at max video specs and the laptop did not disappoint. CPU temp stayed under 60 degrees and you temp did too. Definitely one of my Best Buy’s!

It can be idle with no programs running and it is hot. My Dell work laptop is always cool. My Dell work lap top is a good laptop and regardless what i am doing on it. it never overheats. Idle or working no heat issues. This lap top is overheating and hot to the touch from idling. ill just leave it idle with no programs running just on the desk top. Night and day from my dell work laptop !!!!! I have tried dealing with dell costumer service and jumping through hoops. It is such a pain. just don't buy it.

      Strixos,

Thanks for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your computer is running hotter than you'd like it to. Here are some steps to help control the temperature on your computer:

      1. Update your computer BIOS to the latest version available
      • Browse to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page:
      • Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
      • Under Category, choose BIOS
      • Locate the latest System BIOS
      • Click Download and save the file to your PC
      • Open File Explorer and browse to the location where you saved the downloaded file
      • Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
      2. Open Alienware Command Center
      3. Click Thermal at the Active Default Theme and set it to Performance
      4. Restart the computer
      5. Once the computer boots into Windows open SupportAssist
      6. Go to the Troubleshooting tab and click on I want to check a specific piece of hardware
      7. Click CPU under CPU Devices
      8. Select CPU Stress Test and click Run Test
      9. Open the Alienware Command Center and go to the Fusion tab
      • The CPU peak temperature should be less than or equal to (≤) 100 ℃
      • When under high stress, the computer's average temperature can be expected to be less than (≤) 100 ℃. We hope that this helps your computer operate at a more reasonable temperature.

Bought the computer October 22,2019. Within three weeks the speakers malfunctioned. Keyboard quit working December 3, 2019. Took it back to the Huntsville Best Buy and they shipped it out for repair. Repair took almost 30 days, they replaced the motherboard, keyboard and speakers. Got it home tonight and now it won’t charge and is dead. Get to go deal with geek squad again tomorrow. Wish I had never spent the $2500
