Great Gunplay with Questionable Gameplay Design

My wife and I both picked up copies of Anthem and have been having an absolute blast playing the game together. Picking out and customizing our Iron-Man like Javelins is an awesome experience. Once you land in battle, fly over to the objective, and kick some awesome Space Iron Man butt. The gunplay is excellent, everything is flashy with amazing graphics and sounds. The synergy between the classes works beautiful together with freezing the enemies and smashing them with a giant metal shield. Zapping them with lighting then catching the enemies on fire. It ALL feels AWESOME in this breathtaking world they produced. Some of the pretties sights I’ve ever seen in a game.
Once the mission is over... you get hit with the Huh? Some questionable end-screen overview section with barely any info on what’s happening, and a ton of loading screens (installing on an SSD is a MUST), Loading screen from the mission end screen back into the city, want to check out your new weapons? Loading screen. Want to change the mission you're on and round up your team for some action. Loading screen. Want to go to the vault and see what crafting materials you have…. Loading screen. Too far away from your group while in the world playing? Loading Screen. Die? Loading Screen. Loading Screen. Loading... loa...lo... screen. The beautiful Frostbite engine CAN NOT handle this type of game. It was designed for arena like maps like Battlefield and Battlefront. While the few year old version The Division fluidly allows you to go from your own private instance to seeing other players and tackling their version of dungeons. No loading screens. Anthem is covered in question gameplay. The entire hub world is in first person view with a ton of NPCs to talk too. The dialog is good, their facial expressions are great for the most part but they go on and on about their life. Do I really care?? I don’t think so. Some of the main characters I do enjoy talking too but the generic people in the corner of the map is just… filler content? Filler LORE content.
Bioware has produced a wonderful world filled with a ton of lore and awesome combat system and I have faith in EA and Bioware to make the game even better. But as of right now, the gunplay and flying is AWESOME while rest of the game is OKAY. I will give it a 4 out of 5 due to the fact my wife and I love playing together and we are having a great time…. Until the missions end and it's another 15-20 mins of generic boring NPC conversations and loading screens. If playing solo, wait for a sale! If playing with a group, its deff a good game buried by questionable game designs or maybe its just the graphics engine. Not sure whats happening here.
Strong Alone. Stronger Together.

Awesome game with tons of room to grow

Just to throw my two cents in here since there seems to be some people who haven't been thrilled and I don't want people to be turned away from a really fun game.
At pre-launch it had some issues, some real irritating ones, but I knew it was more of a server stress test than anything. At launch most things have been cleared up, there's still a couple little hiccups but a lot of them are getting fixed pretty quickly. Bioware (who I thought I would swear off after they abandoned Andromeda so quickly) has been really good about transparency and communication. Their turn around on a lot of things has been really good.
I love the game, I'm a little over 100 hours so far and must say that it has been a blast and am still enjoying it. The story was great and in line with ME2's nice story. They have lots of room to grow which I think we'll see in the coming months.
Gameplay has been fantastic, 4 different javelins to fit any play style and you can switch easily if you decide one isn't for you.
The flying to landing to swimming has been a blast too.
I love also how nice it is to customize it, you can really go nuts and spend a lot of time tweaking the appearance just the way you want.
Lastly the graphics are crazy beautiful - I find myself just parking on a cliff side to enjoy the view. There's very few games I've ever done that with.
I attached a cool pic of the view - keep in mind that I'm on Medium settings due to me running 3x 4k monitors on my older vid card. Love this game so much I made the jump to get a high end card to let it shine.

Fun Game, with some flaws

I am having fun with this game, but its not without some problems. I am encouraged by the gameplay and the mechanics. There are still bugs that need to be fixed and the initial main story quest can be completed quickly. Much of the negative reviews are from people that flew thru the content or just restating what seems to be popular right now in terms of bashing the game because EA is the publisher. It would have probably have been better as a single player game with a stronger storyline, but the matchmaking is painless and quick. If you want to burn thru the content quickly without enjoying the world, you can get bored but they are already promising free DLC so there is that. Microtransactions are limited to purely cosmetic items and can be done with in game grinding.

Fun core, wasted potential

The core mechanics are fun, but they also hint at potential that it's never lived up to.
Nothing pushes you to use flight during combat in any meaningful way. The lot stops focus too much on weapons (with their minor improvements to DPS) and not enough on your cooldown equipment with their greater capacity to impact how you play.
The frequency and length of load screens is also grating, even after the patch. Weird bugs that show your resolution resetting every boot. Technical issues like this also drag it down.
The potential is there, and I hope Anthem grows into it like Warframe, a Division, Destiny and other games were able to. Right now it's just a fun, flawed first draft.

A lot of bugs and crashes. Questions not answered like, why do the javelins overheat and cause you to crash but they only take 2 seconds to cool down? Seems stupid to overheat in the first place. How did that other guy sneak in and steal the javelin when you were going through the trials? You had to prove your worth to be granted access but he just walked in behind you. Where did the enemies go? There were 12 on screen that just disappeared. Turns out to be a glitch. Enemies you kill don't always vanish like they're supposed to. The story is badly written. My character is a man but my javelin seems to have a woman's body and walk. Where do their feet go when they put on the javelins? This game has bricked PS4's. They gameplay does have potential but the devs can't figure it out.

I guess everyone has their own opinions...SO, Don't believe the bad reviews, This is GREAT!
I saw very mixed reviews about this game so was unsure if it would be a good buy. I watched several videos of trailers and game play (suggested) and when the sale price hit $19.99 I had to jump on it, and am glad I did. After watching the videos about it I expected a lot and was Very pleased. The graphics look great, the game play is fast and exciting and you don't get killed before you even land on the ground. ;-) This is a shooter type game - you against creatures/etc. Not battle royale style. The suit you wear is very customizable with different weapons and skills (you can fly). There is a lot to do in this game and it is not just the same repetitive thing over and over. You can play alone as a single player, with a friend or friends as a group, and with people online as well. It makes it nice to have assistance in the game and not everyone trying to kill YOU! If you are interested I say give it a shot. If you like this style game you WON'T be disapointed. It has been my go to game lately :-) Recommended

What's great about this game is the the game mechanics are fun and interesting. The abilities at your disposal are exciting to use but.. the missions are repetitive and the loot drops aren't that interesting. Hopefully the game will get better within the next six months.

Great looking game but has no story and loot system makes no sense. Game feels rushed. Typical EA. But Bioware has promised us a happy ending. Lets hope I don't have to go to burger shop for a sundae instead. Has potential

I was hyped for Anthem at release. Iron Man + Destiny?! Sounded great.
I had EA Access for $5 for a month. I played through the "story", which was awful and nonsense. I played on a high end PC with fast storage so load times weren't bad at all, but connections were terrible. After experiencing the "endgame", which was sparse, I cancelled EA access.
About a year later I hear EA hasn't abandoned Anthem. The game is $5 too, so why not? It was fun enough and I could see myself come back to it at some point.
There is a lot of good here. The core gameplay and classes are solid. It just needs a lot of TLC.
Buy a few copies with friends and blaze through the campaign.

For a BioWare game, it's very disappointing. The story aspect of the game is forgettable. Gameplay is average at best. The main thing that stands out is the flight mechanics. Very little content as of right now, very bare for a game that has been in "development" for 6 years.
It has potential, but I doubt we'll see it realized from all the negative press we're seeing. Definitely do your research before purchasing.

The game is one of the most visually stunning games so far in 2019. I'm running it on a i7 7820x and RTX 2080 Ti at 1440p and get between 70-100fps.
The story is so mediocre that it's painful- hollow and was shoved in to help break the action up. The missions are repetitive a la Destiny where you end up visiting the same zones over and over again only to get behind a door that was locked in the prior mission.
If you are going to buy this game because you will have fun, you will find fun in it. If you are on the edge, do NOT BUY IT unless it's $30 or less.
The endgame content is severely lacking and legendary loot (best in the game) is just a reskin of starter weapons- no diversity and it sucks!

The game it self is good but the endgame and loot seems thin. At the point of this review (3-1-19) they have announced a fair amount of later content and items to be added so I am hopeful for the future of this game. I would recommend but possibly in another month or 2.

I thoroughly enjoy this game. The combat is seriously fun. I just hope they don't abandon this game like they did Mass Effect Andromeda, because if they keep adding content, BETTER LOOT and MORE PERSONALIZATION, it could be great.

Almost ignored this game because of all the online backlash. Should have known its just typical "hive-mind" Internet culture. The game is great! Sure there's a lack of variety, but that is coming. The environments and graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay/gunplay is tight, and the story is more interesting than any other FPS game I've played.
If you like Mass Effect its a more refined version of that game, made into a full-blown multiplayer FPS.
The only actual problem you will find is that there aren't a lot of players, because again, people labeled this as a "bad game" and newcomers were scared off. But I wasn't, I took the leap for all of you and its a great game. Give it a try!

I never played the Destiny games, not a FPS person really (I did play through the Borderlands games).
This is what I looked for: a cooperative game to play with a handful of friends. It provides that hands down. Combat is fun, writing is well done, and I love the suits.
Yes there are issues. As usual with software development some talked about possible features never came (such as immediately equipping new weapons). The disconnect between what happens in the single player area and multiplayer area could be a lot better. However, I enjoy the core game loop a lot. It's my type of loop. There's plenty of room for them to grow and get better (or worse), but was worth the two copies I ordered.

In full disclosure, I'm writing this about a year of not touching the game. I had hoped that Bioware would be able to bounce back like Destiny did. The promise of this game is that you get to feel like Iron Man and the flight mechanics were tricky to get down but felt good when you did with wonderful scenery to fly around in. However, the game's introduction to itself just wasn't as compelling and the current state of vacancy shows there wasn't a good foundation and infrastructure and a gimmick cannot save a game.

This game has been getting flak, but the gameplay is solid, the graphics are gorgeous, and it’s fun to play. BioWare is updating the game weekly and is working hard on fixing bugs, and issues the players are complaining about. It’s fun to fly around as Ironman and smash enemies, firing ice and fire as the storm javelin, or ninja like or hulk like with the other javelins. Great co op game, but you need multiple PCs and copies of the game.

It's a fun looter shooter that suffers from the usual issues these game have when first released, minor bugs, server disconnects, balancing issues, and a few design issues. Bioware seem to be working very hard to remedy a lot of these issues. The gameplay is pretty fun but slightly repetitive. The graphics are amazing . The story and voice acting are pretty good but could be better. Given time I think this game is going to be really good, but I'm still having a lot of fun with it at the moment.
