    Solves The Wrong Problem

Arlo’s new Pro 6th generation outdoor security camera provides minimally increased video in a device that fails to address serious drawbacks for a wireless camera designed to be mounted outside. The camera can only be wireless using battery power but Arlo continues to make battery charging an insane obstacle to camera use. I have to assume that Arlo is aware of their problem here because they print misleading (at best) information in two places on the box the camera comes in: (1) “Easily Recharge & Swap Batteries” (2) “Easily swap out the battery for a fully charged one so you always stay protected” Let me clarify. This system only includes a SINGLE battery – not sure if that is clear unless you read the list of “What’s Inside” on the bottom of the box. The larger problem I have with the language Arlo uses to describe the recharging process is that I get the impression that the individual batteries can be recharged outside of the device – but, in fact, the only way to recharge a battery is with it mounted inside the camera mechanism. The outer body of the camera can stay mounted while you remove the internal camera to take inside and charge (even the charging cable is identified as an INDOOR charging cable). Therefore, even if you purchase a second backup battery, you still need to take the camera inside and offline to recharge that battery – not too sure how this saves time over simply charging the single included battery. Batteries that charge directly are ancient technology now – why can’t Arlo implement this? My other big gripe with Arlo in general is that I feel like advances to camera/battery technology seem to take the backseat to subscription services. Live view, push motion notifications, two way audio, manual siren/spotlight control, and local device settings remain available without a subscription – clearly the motion notifications would be the selling point if you need a no-frills security setup. More advanced features like cloud video history (60 day), AI object detection (person, vehicle, package, animal), custom activity zones, event captions / video search, interactive notifications, and 24/7 emergency / professional monitoring are gated behind Arlo Secure plans (various tiers and pricing). I would recommend checking out the pricing for these services first before deciding on an Arlo camera.
