Great image, performance, and easy-to-use camera.
Arlo - Essential 1-Camera 2K Security Camera, Wired Plug-In Powered. From the box to the mount on the wall and viewing the image on my camera was accomplished in a half hour. I am adding the Arlo to my existing account, but creating the Arlo account isn’t a chore in any way. Arlo keeps it simple. This camera is very lightweight, so the (16ft) power cord and plastic mounting plate allow decent flexibility for placement. The menu of features is just as comprehensive as any other camera in the Arlo lineup, which means you can set up on either 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz bands, enable Smart Detection, create zones, establish routines, subscribe to security plans, and use a comprehensive app to manage it all. SECURITY CAMERA CATEGORY: Wi-Fi Access required 2.4GHz & 5GHz, NOT wired by Ethernet. No Battery. Powered using 5V USB cable (5V) and plug (included); no POE I do not add or subtract “stars” when reviewing security cameras based on the PRESENCE of these features. These simply represent different design objectives. I do try to determine how successful these features are implemented. It may be very important to another buyer to know how connectivity and power are addressed, but my opinion is not in the score. Other camera types might work better for you. SETUP: If you already own an Arlo, simply plug in this Essential 1-Camera 2K Security Camera where you want it, open the Arlo app, find the "+" sign to add a device, and press the button embedded in the top of the camera. A live image will show up in your app along with any other Arlo cameras you might have. Use the “GEAR” to manage the complete array of settings that Arlo provides. ARLO’s security camera includes an array of settings that alert me to people (who can be named if they are frequent visitors or family), pets, vehicles (also specifically identified), and packages. I can even create a unique alert for the open garage or sprinklers. For each Arlo camera in my system, I can independently enable what motion initiates an alert. SUMMARY: I’m not sure whether I will claim the image is the star here or the feature-rich app management. The Arlo Essential 1 Camera 2K is very satisfying because of its clarity, night vision effectiveness, responsiveness, and easy management. However, I am dependent on the subscription to view recordings or to take advantage of the security support. Because ARLO gives no onboard memory storage, the full feature set is only useful if you subscribe to one of their plans. Without the subscription, even continuous monitoring with just a connected camera will prove frustrating because the Wi-Fi link will eventually drop, and you will be forced to regularly reconnect. I like the Arlo, and it fits into my intended use. A prospective buyer needs to weigh the benefits of the Arlo’s subscription model or the limitations of the camera without a subscription.
