Have you ever dreamed of being a pirate, sailing the high seas, singing shanties, digging up buried treasure and pillaging other ships? Then you need to play this game ASAP! Oh, and you're also an assassin, but that's not as important (or as fun) as all the pirate stuff.

i have been an Assassins Creed fan since the first one. This game seems to have perfected the game play mechanics. Free-running and climbing is better. The animations are better. The movement in the environment is better. While I like this game, it seems like it is too much pirate and not enough assassin. In the past games you felt as if you had a purpose, the story drew you in. I may get flamed, but AC3 had a better story than this. I don't feel a connection to Edward. I assassin part of the story does not draw you in. I will admit that once you start exploring the map, the battles and the weather conditions make it fun. I am still an AC fan, I just hope that the next entry in the series has a better story.

THis is a savior of the assassin's creed franchise. AC3 had some great moments but conner was soooo boring. Edward is more intriguing in this one, and it doesn't have any wacky future/present time garbage ending. Sailing around is just plain fun, the diving and fishing mini games are good as well. Beautiful and lush sceneries, OK story that is a little slow developing (better towards the last 3 sequences), and decent present time hacking and story development at abstergo industries. this game sets the franchise up to go in any direction in any era. Should be a good ride!

This was the best game yet for the series!! There is so much more action involve which includes battling the English and Spanish navy in epic boat battles. And my favorite was the shark and whale hunting. I would totally recommend this!!

It is as though you have stepped into the past. The graphics are quite spectacular. Great as a gift for the age appropriate child or adult. My husband loves the Assassin's Creed series. I only wish all the games could play on the PS3.

Pirates are Awesome

I was not planning on buying this game at launch. I've been a fan of the series, but Revelations was buggy and disappointing. AC3 was great at times, but also disappointing at times. I didn't want to get sucked in to the hype again, and I figured I'd just buy this when the price came down and some of the bugs were patched out.
But, I watched a gameplay trailer with my wife. She loved it and said that she wanted to play it as soon as it came out. Who am I to argue with that?
Well, it has been pretty awesome. I'm about a fifth of the way through the main story. I don't want to comment too specifically on the story but I will say that I don't really care about the Edward Kenway character yet, and I'm completely OK with that. I wanted to like Connor, but all of the pivotal moments in his story were just missing or undeveloped in the game. Now, I just don't care, and that's better.
One of the main reasons I was on the fence about this game was because of the pirate thing. "Really?" I said. "A pirate assassin? Pfft." Well guess what, past self. You love pirates. You know you do. You're just trying to act cool.
When you (you the reader, not my past self) were playing AC3, if you did, did you ever find yourself saying "Man, these naval missions are awesome! I wish I could just get out and sail around though. They could make a whole game out of just this!" Well, then this is the game for you, because that is exactly what Ubisoft did. There's still plenty of running around in small island towns, with typical AC fare, but this game is pretty much naval missions. Sink ships and loot, raid forts, visit little islands and big ports. That's what this game is, and I'm loving it so far.

This is a good game. The only downfall is that your out on the sea for half of the game. Yea it's fun for a little while but then it just gets boring having to take time to travel to destinations. Especially if your anxious and in a hurry to start a new stage

For fans of the Assassins Creed series, this is a must buy continuation of the line. First time players will also enjoy the mix of action, story, and missions, but will not understand the links or relevance to earlier versions of AC. Extremely enjoyable to play (and has quite the single player length), but the only frustrating part is certain required missions are EXTREMELY challenging to complete...one wrong move, and congratulations, you lose, please start again at last checkpoint and suffer a few more times! However, once past those spots the game flows well and is extremely fun to play.

I really dislike Assasin creed games and they get old very fast for me. This one is different! It is the pirate open world game I have been wanting since I started gaming. Really excellent pirate simulator. Arrrr!!!

Great graphics. Huge map to explore. Easy for someone new to the series to pick up on. Biggest Assassins Creed yet. I recommend the PS3 version for 60 minutes of extra gameplay.

The only other AC game I've played is AC3 so I don't have much to go by in terms of the series. Note that this review is for SINGLE player. I haven't played in multiplayer.
In general AC4 is a lot like AC3 except it's in a different setting and there's a lot of sea time. It seems to me more user friendly to navigate the menus than before and the game in general seems to be a little more polished and elaborate. There is less time spent in the Animus which seemed never ending in AC3. Animus missions are still silly and a waste of time IMO. There are a lot of the "tail" and eavesdropping" missions for example, making it too repetitive. Although for the unseasoned player like me this could be a plus since it forces you to practice and come up with new tactics to complete the missions. I don't expect the game to be a simulation or realistic but a tornado constantly circling an island getting in the way of you capturing a for is kind of odd... Just one of many minor annoyances.
I like how the mechanics of the game such as in combat and how main character interacts with the world in general. Combat is not overly complicated and the 3rd person perspective looks quite realistic. This is compared to the 3rd person view of other games like Fallout 3 or other Bethesda games where the character just didn't move realistically, giving the impression of sliding over the ground (not sure how else to describe it).
I own this game in both PS3 and PC. Although the console version looks great, the PC version definitely looks a lot better in ultra settings.
I really love this game and can't wait for Unity to come out! It is definitely very enjoyable. More than, say, Call of duty (in single player) where the scripted or linear nature if it gets old really fast.
Gave it 4 stars just because of the repetitive nature of the game, but definitely I would recommend it.

I purchased four new games for my teenage grandson (15) to play while the grown- ups visit. He was most excited that I purchased this one as he has played all the earlier ones in this series.
He loved the graphics, the smooth play, and the story line, but is still only at the beginning of the game.
He would recommend this game to his friends that are mature enough to handle the violence. Overall he is very happy with this choice, and this review is through his eyes not mine.

My boyfriend LOVES this game, and its one of the few that I can tolerate watching. The story line is fascinating, the goals are challenging, the graphics are great. I like to play, as well as watch, the Assassin's Creed games because they keep me interested, and its really the only single player game that we enjoy playing together!

So think of this game as an expansion for the Naval Warefare piece of Assassin's Creed 3. This isn't a true AC experience in that you're running around assassinating people (the best AC experience is, in my opinion, AC 2), but rather an awesome Pirate ship battle simulator! It's a ton of fun, but don't expect it to be "Assassin's Creed" at the core.
