You get what you pay for, until you add an SSD!

This computer is cheap. Really, REALLY cheap. $200-and-under laptops aren't going away and they're only going to get better. That being said, it's still cheap and you're accepting some compromises if you get it. These cheap Celeron N-based laptops are effectively Chromebooks with boot code for Windows instead of ChromeOS. The CPU is kind of anemic and the hard drive is the slower 5400 RPM variety. The motherboard is built like a tablet motherboard, with CPU and RAM *NOT* replaceable. Unlike the HP Stream and other smaller cheap laptops with "eMMC SSDs" this uses a standard hard drive, meaning STORAGE CAN BE UPGRADED. In my review photos, you'll see where I've disassembled the unit and installed a 120GB SSD and cloned the un-booted Windows 10 system to it. The SSD makes up for the slow CPU and makes this a pretty nice all-around laptop. The 15.6" screen is much nicer to work on than comparable 11.6" screens commonly found on other ultra-cheap laptops. The touchpad is a decent Asus multi-touch capable pad, though as expected for this price point the buttons under the pad feel stiff and cheap. Screen brightness and clarity is acceptable and most people will be very happy with it. The weight is pretty light because the laptop is as hollow as other reviewers suspected it might be; in my photos you'll see all of the empty space. This is basically an 11.6" laptop design extended to fit a 15.6" laptop shell. Bottom line: it'll be pretty slow in the retail configuration, though it'll browse and play video acceptably and generally get the job done for anyone who needs a laptop at a really low price point. If you are capable of doing the disassembly and cloning work yourself, it's a good idea to pick up a solid-state drive to replace the hard drive because it makes a world of difference and only increases the total cost by 20-25%. If you need something for more than basic Internet, office suite, and media consumption, you should get a more expensive and powerful laptop.

Can't beat the price, I took a chance on this laptop because of the price and it paid off. The quality is really good as well as the performance. It has everything one would find in a more expensive laptop. I have had no problems streaming my xbox 1, watching movies, playing online games. ASUS rocks!!

I consider myself a long fan of computers since command line interface operating systems. MS-dos. Yes out the box the computer is slow full of lame programs trying to get you to buy it or subscribe to a service for a small fee of course. Don't be fooled. These are basically corporate spyware and malware installed on your system. So you need to be fairly up to speed on Microsoft operating systems. After a few days of deleting all that redundant software. 4 anti virus programs. Really? the computer finally behaves like a Mac out the box. You know. Smooth. Flawless out the box. Once set up computer is great. Sure not sturdy. CD drive should be set to 10x max or it will rattle the laptop like crazy. Aside from little annoyances. Like touch pad, no thanks. Get a mouse. Great PC for the money. Windows 10. With some tweaking can be a stable and efficient. Tons of features on laptop normally found on higher end tops. Asus is a top notch motherboard manufacturer so I gave em a shot in the laptop realm. For the price. Very happy. Tech savvy person required to make laptop run well.

    Good laptop for the basics

If you are looking for a affordable laptop that does the very basics, you can't go wrong with this Asus. Windows 10 requires getting used to if you're not familiar with it. Having a dual core processor does put you at a disadvantage sometimes, as just getting on the internet can cause it to process at maximum and slow everything down. But I remember dial up and it still beats the crud out of that. The battery usually lasts about 3-4 hours of continuous use. The screen quality is good in my opinion, especially with the eye reducer option, where it dims the screen so I don't get a migraine. Pricing was fantastic and a big selling point to me as I had a limited budget to work with. If you're looking for a laptop to use for just internet, Office work, or even some basic games, this is a great buy. If you want a little faster, find something with a quad core processor.

    Just what I needed

I needed a laptop for schoolwork but at a low price. After careful review, I selected this model. It's met all my needs. Online course work comes through without a hitch. The speakers are great and provide clear sound. DVD/CD drive works fine. For recreation I chose Minecraft as the game to play on it and haven't had any real issue there either. Only time lag seemed to happen was when McAfee was doing its own scan of the computer. Microsoft Word was available as a free downloadable App, which was nice. All in all I am very happy with this computer. It weighs under 5 pounds, runs cool, and I average 4-5 hours of battery time before plugging it in becomes a must. Takes three hours or so to get a full recharge in. Haven't actually used it to surf the web or YouTube but I'm confident it would perform just fine. Great first time laptop. Only annoying thing is you can't upgrade from 4gig to 8 gig unless you send the laptop to the manufacturer, as it requires physically opening the laptop up, thereby voiding your warranty if you do it by anyone else. Though I think the 4 gigs will do me just fine after all.

Can't Beat This Machine With a Stick at the Price

First take a look at similarly priced laptops in this price range, a very close look. Mass storage, that is what passes for a hard disk is the issue. This laptop machine has an actual hard drive with a spinning disk inside so its storage capacity is a respectable 500 gigabytes. Take a look at the competition in this price range. In terms of mass storage (where the Windows 10 operating system is) they are puny 98 pound weaklings. They use something like flash memory for a hard drive. This is very expensive and very limited. Read the fine print: maybe 64 gb or 32 gb of mass storage. Subtract 20 gb from that for the Windows 10 operating system and see what's left. Subtract 20 gb from 500 gb provided by this machine and there are 480 gb left for applications and data. Admittedly the system memory on this machine is a little light and not expandable but its 4gb can run Windows 10 respectably. This machine is good enough to stream Netflix (tm) over it's Wi-Fi Interface. This machine can handle the computational needs of most normal mortal users. It is not a gaming machine nor can it do complex engineering computations, But it can handle most proletarian needs such as word processing, image analysis along the lines of Photoshop (tm) and Microsoft Office (tm) because of its mass storage of 500 gb. The operating speed of the machine appears to be somewhat compromised by all of the demonstration software that it's loaded with that pops up to death. For an experienced user this can all be deleted. The screen is bright and large but there is one incredible feature of this machine that has to be seen to believed. It actually has an HDMI output socket so that its screen image and sound can go right to a large TV screen via an HDMI cable of sufficient length. If a buyer is fortunate enough to get one of these machines on sale for under $200 it's a virtual form of highway robbery. Although the machine does have an optical media reader this may not have write capability. Just use flash memory. This is a real computer for the price so if it gets smashed or stolen there is no way the bank would be broken. This reviewer was so impressed with the machine that one was purchased for a tax computer, another for a wife of 30 years, and of course myself.

My first laptop was an HP. It took me a while to try a different brand, and I must say, changing to an ASUS was a good choice. It takes no time to charge, and the charge actually lasts long than the HP I had in the previous years.

Great Laptop looks and feels good. Best thing about this laptop for me is the keyboard. Awesome price, includes all the ports you could really ask for in a laptop. Two Cons processor and battery life. This is my first laptop I've owned but battery life is around 3-4 hours which isn't as long as I hoped or wanted. I always carry my charger with me. And processor is only clocked at 1.60 GHz so gaming isn't really a thing on this laptop. I play league of legend's at lowest graphics and average 60fps, max I've seen is around 80fps. But all in all great first laptop love the screen size love the keyboard and all the ports and great price.

My review. The store is in convenient location for me. Geek Squad helpful. Price $249.99. With "Webroot Secure Anywhere" for 6 months included. Purchased 1 year service contract which included walk-in help. Asus Sonic Master X540SA Notebook PC with installed Windows 10. *** First time using Windows 10. (Previous Asus Netbook was XP died after 7 years. Battery NG for last year and half.) I have another computer which is an old Apple iMac. ---- First time using Windows 10. Regular learning curve for me!! I liked the old XP system and set up this new computer with ICONS on the screen. The TILES don't show unless I click the START choice. Any TILES I didn't need I removed from START screen. ---- First big Windows 10 update would not download. Geek Squad said they would do it but had to leave the laptop. But by that time I had entered personal data that I did not want to take out. Tried again to do the download at home. I adjusted Screen and Sleep settings and kept at it. (Computer would time out and shut down unless it was being used) Eventually a successful downloading the big update. Other updates no problem but they were short. No visual indicator on screen for CAPS LOCK! Researched how to add a sound cue that helps. (Low volume beep tones.) I prefer a visual indicator along with the beeps. First big complaint (for me) is location of USB ports only on left side close to front. Since I prefer a mouse - that is where the mouse USB connector plugs in. Also where I insert any flash drives too. When I type my big hands hang over the edge. I was afraid of accidentally breaking off the mouse plug in the computer. Also where the USB ports are located is where I pick up the laptop when I have to move it around. My fix was to buy a USB-C adapter and use the C port located nearer the top corner. (If you rarely or never use a mouse this probably won't be a problem for you.) I wish the DELETE key was a little bigger. (I am more used to my iMac keyboard for speed typing.) Probably just my big hands, the "n" key seems to be extra sensitive when I hit then space bar. At one point START would not click on. Google search shows that this is a frequent "Win 10" problem. Several ways that might work using RUN COMMAND and code. (I had moved a copy of the Control Panel to the Desktop previously.) One remedy for "START not turning on" is to run a Windows 10 update and immediately choose restart. This worked for me. After the START problem I moved several more things that I use to Desktop and a copy of my virus programs to the Taskbar. I found that I could still use Microsoft MRT (Malicious Software Removal Tool) with Win 10. (Moved copy to Taskbar for easy access.) So far so good.

Bought for my 8 year old to play games and watch youtube. He needed an upgraded platform to be able to play games and larger screen. We have no complaints. Easy to use. My son knows more about how to use than I do. Sufficient battery life. Screen quality better than normal. There are better computers out there, but not for the price. Great computer for kids.
