      Dear Griz,

I certainly understand your disappointment and the inconvenience this may have caused you. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, this is a random problem. Usually, you will do the following if the system will not bootup or power on from the get-go. Try to do a power cycle a couple of times. Shut it down completely, wait for at least 10 seconds then power on. Please wait, if the system is applying updates in the System Registry, it will black screen temporarily. If it still black screen after a few minutes, at least 10 minutes, please repeat the power cycle process again. Please verify if the AC adapter was properly connected from the laptop to a working surge protector or AC outlet and the power button is being pressed all the way down to trigger a power on signal. Also, please try to disconnect the power cable and let the unit drain for 24 hours to clear the memory and reset the hardware to default settings. After doing this, please reconnect your AC adapter then power on the unit.. If you need more information or further assistance with ASUS products, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to help.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

      Regards,

      Rodel

    Great budget laptop only if...

...I read all reviews and I knew what I was getting myself into, but it was also obvious from the spec that Hard Drive on this laptop is slow so before you order ask yourself these two questions: 1. I am technical enough to upgrade Hard Drive to SSD and don't care about warranty 2. I am NOT technical enough or afraid to open laptop that would void my warranty If you answer is #1 then this a laptop for you. if you selected #2, look for anything else that has SSD to begin with. In terms of upgrade it's not very user friendly because after you unscrew the bottom screws, you have to pry carefully the keyboard. The problem though you can't lift it entirely because of several cables. So you either have to figure out how to detach those cables, or work with partially lifted keyboard. Hard Drive itself located under right palm, so two screws were easily accessible, but the other 3 I have to be creative. Once that was done, everything was blazing fast on the laptop. Btw, before you do upgrade hard make sure to clone the existing hard drive, there are plenty of tutorials on the web Screen is bright enough, speakers are pretty decent and keyboard is a pleasure to type on. The body itself is not entirely aluminium. Only appears to be the screen back and the keyboard top, but bottom is plastic entirely which is why I would take down half a start because I was under impression that it was aluminium. I bought as open box item and it looked brand new, clearly it was returned because it was very slow. So at $400 this is totally worth the hassle with the upgrade.

Great laptop, sometimes has touchpad driver issues

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought in 2018. I think it works great for school, paying bills, streaming and playing very basic games. Two things about this laptop over the last 4 years have been an issue though. First, I will say that the speakers are very soft sounding and I do use a bluetooth Oontz Angle to listen to music, class videos and movies otherwise you cannot hear much if there is any other background noise. I'm sure its a common issue with most laptops overall, but figured it was worth mentioning. My second and most pressing qualm that I have with this laptop, and maybe it's not the laptop maybe its the operating system but - EVERY few months when after an update (I update as soon as I get notified of updates, so it doesn't happen right after EVERY update) but after an update I will completely lose my touchpad. Can't enable from command keys, can't even locate the driver in Device Controls. I usually have to install a new driver, or uninstall the current one if it's available and then restart and reinstall. It is so frustrating. I have spent hours trying to figure out this issue in the past, and just yesterday spent a good hour and a half troubleshooting because I went to open it up to get some work done and found I couldn't use my touchpad yet again. I don't know how to prevent this. It is so annoying. I WILL say having a touchscreen makes navigating through this issue not having to tab everywhere is a blessing. I do have a mouse I use too but the touch is definitely very helpful. I will also say my son enjoys playing a few computer games on here that allow him to touch and drag on the screen like his tablet. Overall, I am glad I have this laptop. I just really really hate the issue it has with the touchpad driver. I have never had any other driver issues or issues after updating, just occasionally your touchpad will be inoperable for no apparent reason and you have to spend some time to figure out how to make it work.

    Fast and lightweight, but glitchy

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Not a bad laptop for $500. As others have noted, it was extremely slow to set-up and update (took several hours) but once that was done, it has been pretty fast, even with multiple apps and tabs open. I like that it is lightweight, but wish it had better grippers on the bottom, you can easily slide it off a smooth surface on accident if you are not careful. Also, the hinge doesn't lay flat if you push the screen back too far, and it scratched my wood desk with the sharp edges near the hinge. Definitely needs to be placed on a pad when being used. Works okay overall, but frequent glitches and very short battery life. Glitches include the screen freezing up or flickering in and out and the mouse touchpad functionality randomly turning on and off. It's annoying, but fortunately it has a touch screen as well for when the touchpad doesn't work. I plugged in a USB mouse and had the same issue. Battery life on a full charge is only 2-4 hours, which has been probably the biggest disappointment so far. Even if I use the laptop for an hour, close it, and come back later, the battery will be depleted. Trying to find out if there is something running in the background that I am unaware of that is depleting the battery, or if this is just the standard battery quality.

I have to say, I was surprised by the components that this device includes. Of course one was of how this laptop is also a touch screen, which makes me feel like I have a tablet and a laptop all in one. I don't care what other people think but this laptop is great AND I got it for sale too which is sweet for $629 in comparison to the original price. I hope people can try this great laptop and hear their opinions on it. I have to really say that this is the perfect laptop for people on a decent budget. This laptop is the best laptop that I received ever in my life. I really recommend that people check this laptop out

It's a great device after replacing the 1TB drive.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought two of these notebooks this week during a deal of the day sale for less than $430 each which was a great deal considering the specs. First, the comments about the 1TB hard drive are all true, the notebook is embarrassingly slow with this drive. Since this computer uses the same motherboard as the TP412U, there is a variety of upgrade options including an onboard m.2 SATA SSD connection that can accommodate a 2280 drive (nothing smaller or larger), a SATA 6 SSD, and an extra 8GB SODIMM to bring the RAM to 16GB if desired. To get to the m.2 and RAM sockets you will need to completely remove the motherboard from the device though, which will probably void your warranty. Even with just a SATA 6 SSD swap this computer is incredibly fast for the price. Rather than try and clone the drive, I just made a Windows 10 install USB using the Windows media creation tool and downloaded all of the drivers from ASUS directly. Battery life appears to be between 6-8 hours after the swap when fully charged and idle, hopefully it'll get close in real life usage.

Great Design and Screen - But slow and hard hinges

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this laptop in December 2018 and at first, I was in love with it. But here it goes some cons and pros: Cons: - the 1TB HD doesn't give enough speed for the laptop as expected for an Intel Core i5 8th Generation (I'll update for an SSD). The boot can take more the one minute and the system runs very slowly. Fix it a little bit using Defragment and change the"performance" box on "Advanced System Setting"; - after one and a half years, the hinges became extremely hard that damage the screen and had to bring the laptop for the repair. I wonder if I was the only one with this issue since I didn't see anyone complaining about this problem; - tablet mode almost useless. Pros: - light device; - excellent design; - FHD Screen; - good price.

    Good Laptop, Loud fan

Haven't been using it long but it is a good laptop for a student like me that doesn't require much heavy use. The build is also quite sturdy and I feel like this will last much longer than my old cheap laptop. However, the fan is pretty loud even though everything I've done so far has been light and at my desk. (Same thing happened to the larger q505, which I traded in for this smaller version).

Computer seems powerful, however there might be a problem with the HD. Running task manager, the HD stats were bad and also showed bad in resource manager. After running HDtune the HD performance got >10x better. HDtune is just a HD performance measurement. Therefore I don't expect the HD performance to stay good. All this means I need to figure what settings are needed for the HD not to be in the STUPID mode. Also I had to power off the computer after the power saving features turned off the display. This might be a Windows thing because my other laptop has the same issue. I set never to turn off the display, sorry EPA.

    Frustrated and Disappointed

I haven’t had a computer since January, as my previous ASUS finally died. My family has always had ASUS computers, as has my fiance. I was so impressed with the display model! I mean, truly. I wasn’t going to buy a computer until I saw the cool and useful features this one had. The store display was fast. The touch screen works beautifully on this device. I got the bamboo ink pen and it feels like writing with a real pen. The design is really nice, and the screen definition is good. I got it to download Sims quickly, and installed office, my composing software, the whole nine yards. I could even play with the new Windows Ink. (I’m suprised it managed this, as I didn’t know it at the time, but it was trying to update Windows.) But it kept freezing. I look into it, and it turns out it had been trying to update windows for HOURS. Ticked me off, as it told me earlier in the set up that it was good to go. I am now on hour 17 of trying to set up this machine. Windows is impossibly slow. Maybe this computer will be perfect once Windows is installed. Maybe it won’t. Either way, I shouldn’t have to leave my device to update over night, not when I paid nearly a thousand dollars for it. I am frustrated and disappointed. This was the first new computer where I got to go and pick out exactly what I wanted and it doesn’t work. I have since left it alone for the past twelve or so hours to download the cumulative update. It finally installed it but it has spent the past two and half hours trying to restart and apply it. Still only at 35%. My friend got a cheap Lenovo and it only took four hours to set up just a few months ago, so I can’t help but to feel a little scandalized. I’m upset that I’ve now had my machine for a day but haven’t actually gotten to use it. Long story short, first impression was not great. Still have a little hope left, as I expect it will run smoothly after this nonsense has finished based on the way it installed Sims and my other programs, but for right now, I’m just upset. For this hassle, I sort of wonder if I shouldn’t have splurged on the nice model if the initial experience is the same as the budget model. Unsure at this time if I’d recommend it to a friend. Maybe only if they had the patience to fight the Windows Update.

It’s a great laptop if you swap out the hdd for a ssd. I honestly never used the hdd that came with it. I swapped out right away and it’s fast and loads up in less than 7 sec to logon in screen. Had an iMac with hdd not fusion and returned it for the long, long boot time. Overall I’m happy with this machine for now. Only con I can think of is wish the ram was upgradable and the battery life was a little longer. Everything else has been great. Btw, this and a 512gb ssd cost me only $760. Much less than what you’d be getting for buying a more pricey laptop with same to similar specs.

Awesome laptop for the price. I agree that the hard drive and updates can be slow at times, but it is lightweight and is great for the price. I see some of these reviews and do not understand why everyone is treating it as if it is some thousand dollar+ machine. I for one am pleasantly surprised and have not had any problems and I have had it for almost 5 months.

Great FHD display and tablet features

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I went from an I7 laptop with a 7200 rpm drive, to this laptop with an I5 processor and 5400 rpm drive, so I was not expecting it to be as fast. Great laptop for surfing Web, watching movies and running apps. It is not a gaming laptop. I love the size of the 14" screen that was designed to fit in a 13" footprint, with the ability to increase text and display aspect ratio. The laptop is so quiet, you don't even know it is on. During long Windows updates, you sometimes have to look at the power light on the side to even know it is running the upgrade, which could explain why some people had trouble with updates. The latest Windows 10 updates run a long time as expected, so be patient. I had the same experience on my faster laptop. Sometimes during updates the screen will go black for several minutes, so don't turn the laptop off. The battery is internal and not upgradeable, so you are left with between 4-6 hours of useful battery life. There is no optical drive, so you will need to buy external, preferably with a usbc connector for speed. Earlier reviews complained about speed. You could disable the Superfetch service under Services that loads a lot of programs ahead of time, and try reducing the number of Start task programs. Superfetch service must be disabled with every Windows update. You could even disable the Windows Update service and do manual updates when you want them. For the discount price I paid, this is a great buy.
