Best buy for Best Budget Laptop!! Great upgrade!

Now I may sound a bit biased seeing as how the last laptop I purchased was much, much, LESS gb of RAM (2 gb) so any improvement would feel vast, but I kid you not this is definitely a worthy buy! In comparison to some of the other comments I'll also say my backlit keyboard works just fine and it's quite impressive in the dark! Boot time is pretty fast and the fingerprint feature also makes it a breeze. I am of a certain generation and although having the now vestigial optical drive removed did hurt in theory, once I began to use this machine I barely missed it. The browser they want you to use is nice and all but I do still prefer Chrome so I just downloaded that as an option. Had no issues pairing with my printer which was just a nice benefit , as I have had that issue in the past with other pairings. So this thing is sleek in appearance but quite formidable in performance for an everyday laptop. I'd never compare this nor recommend this for those who are serious gamers. Serious gamers need serious laptops! And there ain't nothing wrong with that. Hardware is King in that realm. But this doesn't leave the royal court. Still a very, very good laptop PC. I'd give it to a college student as a going away present, any student really over primary age, someone who's plain cheap and doesn't upgrade models very often but needs and wants something substantial(ME, ME, ME, ME lol). I still plan on getting a super desktop to have alongside this in the near future, but for light multimedia streaming(Netflix binge sessions, digital movies etc), home office use, or just writing those personal memoirs- I'd say this is an excellent purchase! No betting required.

    Unreliable, Slow, Recurrent Glitches

    Posted

I bought this Asus laptop from Best Buy a little over a year ago. Here's my review: THE BAD: -Slow start time (about 15-20 minutes of blue screen and spinning cursor) | To put it into perspective, my 2004 Toshiba laptop started much faster -Recurrent glitches. It has a “100% disk usage” glitch that you can find fixes for online, but they’re only temporary. At restart, the problem recurs. It slows the laptop down until you resolve it each time you restart. - Random issues with wi-fi connection – same as above. The same wi-fi I’ve been using since I bought the laptop will suddenly stop being recognized. I’ve tried all available solutions, but the problem recurs. All that works is another restart (again: I’ve never had this problem on any previous computers) - The laptop makes strange scraping / crunching sounds, the speakers turn to static sometimes, and the camera is occasionally “not available.” Sometimes, it also randomly ejects flashdrives and external hard drives. -If you leave it plugged in when you put it in "Sleep" mode, it will start up on its own again, even when it's closed. This is another issue where adjusting settings does nothing. You have to unplug it. THE GOOD: -I like the screen. It’s bright enough and nice and large. -I work with a lot of large graphic design files and this laptop rarely freezes. (This is the only reason I keep using this laptop). SUMMARY: This laptop has too many glitches that can’t be resolved and a slow start time. I’ve owned computers since the early 1990’s, and this is the second worst one I’ve ever had.

      Dear Adrian,

I do understand your disappointment if you are experiencing slow system speed, glitches or performance and other issues with the laptop. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, this is a random problem. In order to maintain optimum system stability and performance, cumulative WINDOWS Update needs to be installed periodically. If you are accessing web applications, please make sure the unit has access to an established router and internet service is working properly since this will definitely affect system speed and performance. Also, clearing internet cache or browsing history will improve system performance. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be happy to help.

It’s very urgent laptop purchage, I made at San jose, CA 95135 but the pick up location at Bejtonville, AR. The best buy checked and honfirmed the availability at pock up location. When my wife went to pick up, no item was there. They cancelled my order without contacting me. I went to San Jose, CA store again. After prolonged discussions with customer care, manager came and assured the express shipping to Bentonville, AR from the nearest warehouse within 2 days and given date and written on my receipt as 29th march 2019. Then I wanted fir 1 day to receive a sorry message that the. Best Buy may deliver or cancel due to sone reasons. I checked my order and observed a price change more than doubke on online store bestbuy.com. I went again to San Jose, CA store to inquire about the message. They replied to ignore the message and reconfirmed with a UPS tracking number. But the UPS delivered on 3 rd April 2019. The best disappointment was this: when I approached San Jose, CA store after knowing the item was not available at Pickup location, I offered to check the same item at San Jose, CA store. The item was available and immediately I offered to give that sp that I would like to do USPS overnight delivery. They rechecked and confirmed the item availability at pickup location. This was pn 26th March and WE ENDED UP RECEIVING ON 3rd April. What an hectic painful repeated visits and tax charge of more $150 and waste of time. Loss of hourly pay to my wife at Bentonville.

This laptop is amazing. It's powerful, fast, has tons of storage and is easy to use. Its an excellent investment. I do graphic design and consistently have 25-40 tabs open on google chrome, along with a graphic design program, and a couple other programs all at once. Despite this, this thing just keeps going, doesnt lag, doesnt slow down. The fingerprint login makes my life easy, it works 75% of the time. Touch screen is awesome, I rarely flip it around and use the tablet mode. Fun feature, I just have little use for it. The camera is great, I do video chat alot and its basically flawless. On the downside... it feels a bit heavy; the number pad is frustratingly small at times and the buttons are arranged differently, so I sometimes find myself naturally tapping a button from muscle memory, only to discover its no longer there. Theres no CTRL button on the right of the keyboard, no HOME or END buttons either, so if you use those a lot, it will be a mild annoyance. The power cord coming out of the right side just annoys me. It seems like the left would have been more natural and fitting. Theres no disc drive, so dont plan to add software from a CD or burn a CD unless you buy an external drive. Overall? Its an awesome laptop. Just be sure to get the $150-$200 geeksquad insurance. It is worth it. I used it at least 3-4 times on the previous version of this laptop, and expect to use it on this one eventually as well.

I got this to replace old laptop I mostly use when traveling. The specs say it has a Backlit Keyboard but I checked all settings and F keys and if it does I can't figure out how to turn it on, that is important to me as I use it when at hotels with lighting not so good in the evening. Spec says this.... Backlit keyboard Allows you to enjoy comfortable and accurate typing, even in dim lighting. Also spec says it has Ethernet which I prefer since I copy large video files back and forth from laptop to my PC. But there is no Ethernet port. If I have to buy a USB external Ethernet that's ok. But I really want backlit keyboard. I got this 2 month ago but barely used it. Now I see another model at Best Buy that has backlit keyboard but too late to exchange this. Will ASUS let me exchange online for a model with Backlit keyboard! I have barely used this. Otherwise it seems nice and pretty slick. I don't really care about the Touch screen but may end up using it. The only other thing is it's a bit slippery when you carry it so you need to be careful.

      Dear Jeffer03,

Indeed, it is a nice and slick laptop. I certainly understand your disappointment with the product and the inconvenience this may have caused you if you are experiencing issue with the keyboard back light and not Ethernet port available. In order to enable or increase the keyboard backlight, the hotkeys, " Fn + F4" needs to be pressed repeatedly. Presssing "Fn + F3" decreases and disable back light. The laptop was not advertised having an Ethernet port, a USB to Ethernet adapter needs to be utilized. Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than happy to help.

I have had this system about a month. Pro: Fast in most areas Solid build, keyboard feel, back lite keyboard, touch screen, fingerprint ID works well Bluetooth pairs well with other devices under $ 1000 16G memory! Con: Graphics capabilities sometimes noticeable, Slight delay on boot (need SSD) Runs warm at times, battery life can go quick, only 2 USB 3.0 Note: Not considering a gaming machine, did not perform will with Intel graphic benchmarks, but the display and resolutions is very good, able to do basic 3D Very well *** Does NOT have Ethernet port **** but have found the Wifi very robust without any issues os speed or connectivity issue. I assume you could get an network adapter if necessary with the usb ports (My MacBook Pro does not have an Ethernet Port) *** Limited usb ports (2) usb 3.0 **** but has usbc -- which is fast, and a charging capability on the usb 3.0 .. for other devices - like your phone Windows HOME: But so far the OS seems robust and all devices work well -- Latest version of office runs well HDMI - works well with projector Side note: My work machine is a MacBook Pro at 3X the cost, and the only major advantage with that machine is the graphics performance and MAC OS - but the feel and performance is similar and I like the ASUS build and feel. Not sure how support will be, but found the support page for drivers and documentation adequate. Hoping I do not run into issues that some faced, so far I see no hardware/software issues and everything I load seems to work. I develop code and have Java/C++ and Node development tools loaded.

I read these reviews before buying one. I started to get the i5 version, because of reviews on here were horror stories or some that gave me optimism. Let me tell you, people don't know how to use a computer. Lol. THE SOUND IS INCREDIBLE thanks to the built-in Harman/Kardon speakers. I use this thing for entertainment (movies and I love my music) and MS office mainly. I eventually want some music production software, so 16gb is worth it. I love it because I don't have to buy a tablet. because it's also probably the best tablet you can buy! This thing without SSD is pretty fast. There is an additional M.2 SSD slot you can use, and I eventually will. The start-up to login is about 15 seconds and the fingerprint reader is very responsive. Once in Windows, you can get to work almost immediately. I get about 8 hours on battery saver power mode. There isn't much of a difference in experience on battery saver mode honestly, except it will save your battery. This runs 4k videos on YouTube like its nothing. Use Chrome for videos, it looks noticeably better than Microsoft Edge. Download all the updates when you finish the setup. ( type windows setup in the Cortana search). Have Fun!

I had the 2017 Model and the hinge just broke when I opened it one day. Then a week later I opened it, and the screen started cracking. I ONLY utilize my laptop for my education. I was so dissatisfied that this happened to a thousand dollar laptop, no rhythm or reason. I did some research and found others had this issue too. I went in to purchase this model and found it to be nice. It is still expansive, However, you get what you pay for..... so they say when my other broke for zero reason on my behalf. I do love this laptop. I am still adjusting to the "new" and transferring everything. (It is like getting a new phone). I am upset that I have college points and discounts and they were not honored and it was especially for this model, the Microsoft software and more. So I still had to pay the cost vs my discount. I will say the stylus does NOT come with this laptop and that was 50 dollars more. It was disappointing for that. I do feel Asus should honor their end and Best buy should honor their end for college student discounts, especially when showing them directly to them.

I brought this notebook about 2 weeks ago and so far I'm impressed with how fast and powerful it is. The set-up was simple and easy; just follow the on-screen prompts and you will not have any issues. Once the initial set up is complete, make sure that you download all the windows/Asus updates as necessary. It boots up extremely fast, especially for a notebook with a 5400 rpm 2TB HD; which by the way is a ton of storage space. The Fingerprint reader is responsive and makes logging in a breeze. The touchscreen is bright, has good color resolution and is also very responsive. This notebook also gives you the ability to convert it to a tablet by folding the screen down. This feature very useful for viewing and displaying powerpoints, watching videos and other multi-media programs. It has an illuminated keyboard and the lightning can be controlled by using the F3 and F4 function keys. The speakers sound good when listening to music or watching a video and battery life is exceptional. I mainly brought this notebook to do online classes, light gaming, and daily home use. This is my first Asus laptop and it has exceeded all my expectations. I definitely recommend this product and I'm loving my awesome ASUS notebook.

    Worst Experience

I have had this computer replaced, and worked on but it still is the worst computer purchase I have ever made. It is VERY noisy, fan noise, and drive noise mostly, but it can literally wake you up at night if it's on. It is very slow to start up, and even after 20 mins it will just halt and not respond to anything -- after another 15 mins it may start responding, or just be frozen. It is an incredibly frustrating machine and not worth half of what I paid for it. Further, whenever any work is done on it by Geek Squad you have to do a complete backup and they send it away for a week. I did not purchase a computer in order to keep sending it away as I need to use it daily so this thing is also highly inconvenient. I see why Best Buy put Geek Squad in their store. It is because the quality of these machines is extremely poor. I'll say it twice: Not worth the risk. Not worth the risk.

      Dear Snowman21,

I do understand your disappointment and the inconvenience if the fan is noisy and you are experiencing slow speed and system freeze. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, these are random problems. It is normal for the fan to spin at full-throttle and generate a louder sound while the laptop is under heavy load like, WINDOWS Update, antivirus scan or malware. When system resource utilization is high, this will generate more heat than normal and tends to trigger the fan to spin at full-throttle. It does decreases or normalizes once utilization goes down. In order to maintain optimum system stability and performance, cumulative WINDOWS Update needs to be installed periodically. If you are accessing web applications, please make sure the unit has access to an established router and internet service is working properly since this will definitely affect system speed and performance. I purchased this Asus 2 in 1 when it was a deal for best buy’s deal of the day. It is a very stylish two in one notebook. The only bottleneck that I had with this system was the hard drive but I fixed that with a solid state drive. A heads up for those of you looking to do something similar it is a little challenging to open the bottom of the system. You will not find screws below the feet of the system. Start trying to open it with a guitar pick or a Spudger where the bottom is closer to the palm rest area is. I found this the easiest way to open it and slowly work your way around the edges. This system will take a 2 1/2 inch or M2 format drive. Now that I have the solid-state drive in this it runs flawlessly. Highly recommend!! Thanks

Right after turning on and setting up the computer it would continuously disconnect from the wifi. I turned off the computer and reset the router. Upon restarting it had deleted the password to log on to the computer. Luckily the pin code still worked. I factory reset the computer and it took over 12 hours to reset. Upon starting up again it still would not connect and did not present with the same option when setting up the computer. I took it into geek squad and they couldnt even get it to get off of the blue screen. I was told it had a broken hard drive and that I should upgrade to a better computer (Lenovo Legion). Cost me more money and then that computer had an issue as well and had to be traded in for another.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the product. I do understand your disappointment and the inocnvenience if you are experiencing system crash with a blue screen of death, and it will no longer boot up normally in WINDOWS. Please try to do a PC Reset and install all updates, if reset was successful. If PC Reset didn't work in order to resolve the issue, you can do a factory restore using a Recovery Media. If you were not able to create one, you can use the Media Creation tool to create one. The tool and the ISO image for WINDOWS is available and can be downloaded at the Microsoft website. The machine was exactly what I was looking for: a great travel computer, a convenient way to watch videos on a plane (I like to fold it around with the keyboard down on the tray), a much better touch pad than it's predecessor (read user manual on this feature). The full size keys make the keyboard comfortable and decisive. One nit: the only place to find Home and End keys is on the numeric keypad which must be in navigation mode. But there is no indicator light for num lock mode. Be careful laying the keyboard flat on an airplane tray table. I lost a key on a tray that had a ridge at the back. $60 to send it in to ASUS. Waiting for after market key covers to be available for this model.

With the exception to the computer not having an SSD it was exactly what I was looking for. I read the reviews and several people said the computer was quirky and gave a do not buy recommendation; I bought it anyway. I was able to get the laptop set up, but when restarting, it would go the the MicroSoft page, I would log in and it would go no further; it went to a black screen and would not populate with the Windows Desktop. On two occasion, after waiting 45 minutes each time, it finally came on. It was so unreliable, there was no question that it had to be returned. I like Asus, but this laptop lived up to several of its negative reviews.

This computer is a replacement for my Asus Zenbook which after 15 months the integrated graphics card died and Asus would not stand behind saying the did not know it was an issue (except it is all over the internet as a known issue). After a fight they affter to fix for $500 (vs $700) with a 60 day warranty!! So this is the replacement I got and I won't be able to take on business trips as it is way too heavy to deal with. Other than that it does have a TON of space to store, two USB ports and HDMI which the other one didn't but is more than twice the weight. Nice screen and flips over to be a tablet with the Microsoft Ink. OK maybe I will try it out on my next trip and see how it does.

I purchased this laptop 5 months ago and it is by far the slowest machine I have ever used. I have not installed any taxing software, but it freezes on startup every time I use it. I LOVED the concept of this computer! Sound was excellent, look was great, the value ($$) was fantastic... BUT, when it crashes on you twice (blue screen of death) and locks up on you more than a dozen times all in the FIRST WEEK... The good stuff about it no longer matter!! I returned this computer 8 days after purchase. Found a Dell with comparable specs and only cost me $50ish more! Maybe I got a machine with bad hardware, but it was a bad enough experience that I will never buy ASUS again!

Nice computer for the price replacement for a previous Asus I had. While this one doubled my hard drive space and memory the graphics card is a bit weak! If you're looking for a game machine this is not the one. I purchase this because it's lighter weight than my previous laptop and will work well when traveling. Drawback is that battery seems to drain quickly in sleep mode so unless using the laptop a lot during the day it should be shut down rather than using sleep mode.

This computer is great for business or as a school laptop. I bought it and actually returned it because I did not realize it lacked a separate graphics processor. Best Buy was great in helping me find something that worked better for my needs, but that doesn't mean this is a bad computer. It was built solid, and it worked great. Just don't buy it if you are trying to do heavy gaming or 3d design due to it not having a designated graphics card.

I have been looking for 20 years at this kind of machine but they either have low power capability or super high price . the only difference between this machine and my big lappy is 16gb or ram. this machine will allow me to get away from my desk and spend more time with the family.
