Though slightly heavier than my past laptops, it lives up to my expectations for functionality for my games and other purposes I use my laptop for. The speed of the processors is fast and smooth. I am quite happy with my choice!

I ordered this laptop after having problems with a different ASUS model. I chose it because it had similar features to the one I wanted, but a different cooling schematic (which had been the problem on the other model).
My initial reaction was very positive. This is a very fast machine with almost no startup time. It has a solid state primary drive and a large terabyte regular HDD, so I was able to put all my files on the latter while running most of my programs on the former. Though it's a high-powered gaming laptop, it's also very portable in design. It was everything I wanted in a computer - portable but with power to run memory-intensive programs and games.
Unfortunately after about a week of use it started to develop some small bugs and other glitches. The first had to do with the battery draining itself very quickly even though I had the machine in (what I though was) sleep mode. I closed the lid at about 95% battery, came back 2 hours later, and it was down at 20%. So something was obviously still running. I think I got around most of those issues by changing the sleep settings, but then another issue emerged. The screen started just randomly going dark (albeit with the backlight still on) while I was typing. The screen came back by just hitting the function key and F7, but still - it's an totally unnecessary glitch. It wasn't happening very often - maybe once every 3-4 hours. But it was enough to be annoying...so I called tech support, and spent an hour on the phone with them as I individually uninstalled and reinstalled all the graphics drivers.
I think (read: hope) the issue is finally solved, but I'm also concerned that some other users have reported similar things and there seems to be no clear fix for it. In any case, this SHOULD NOT HAPPEN to a brand new computer. I'm sufficiently annoyed that if it happens again and I don't have a fix within the next few days that I'll be doing yet another return to ASUS...and then switching brands. I really really don't want to do that because (a) I love everything else about this laptop and (b) it's a giant pain in the you know what to keep swapping them out.
Here's my assessment of the good & bad as it currently stands:
PROS:
- Very fast machine for the price
- SSD is great - almost instant startup and access to files on it. Games run seamless off of it
- 1TB secondary hard drive - more than adequate to store photos, movies, and run some games
- 16GB DDRM is more than adequate, but upgradable to 32GB in second slot
- Removable battery pack - means I don't have to open it up when the thing goes bad eventually in a couple years
- Quiet dual fan cooling system that you barely even notice
- Relatively light for a gaming laptop - about 4-5 lbs
CONS:
- The aforementioned random screen shutoff thing was a pain to deal with. Seems to be software related, but it took a week of headaches to resolve.
- Battery is smaller than most laptops. Still good for about 4 hours of power with moderate app use.
- Comes pre-installed with lots of bloatware - all the Wildtangent cra*, off-brand music managers & PDF readers, trial packages trying to get you to buy their cloud storage services, and cra*py ASUS software to get you to download even more bloatware galore. I probably recovered 5GB of SSD space just cleaning out the garbage

I do a lot of CAD work, 3D modeling, photo editing; basically work that requires more processing power than the average user is going to use. This notebook has held up quite nicely. Not as good as my desktop, but I spent over $5k on my desktop for professional grade equipment. But when I'm traveling, this machine does a great job of letting me get basic stuff done on the fly. I'm not a gamer, and therefore have no idea how it stands up in that arena, but for CAD and 3D, it can hold it's own. The only downside is it's a little heavier than I would like, but by no means nothing that can't be dealt with by anyone.

Excellent Power For the Price

I am very happy with this machine - lightning fast, no bloatware, and runs most graphics intensive games at very high settings without a hitch. The amount of horsepower you get for the price is pretty amazing. There are just a few drawbacks to look out for: (1) battery life isn't great; (2) not exactly "small" for portability, but it is a gaming machine; (3) the Windows install puts all of the user folders on the SSD instead of much larger HDD, so moving all of that was kind of a pain.
Overall, I'd highly recommend this machine to anyone looking for a portable gaming rig or if you need extra power for other uses.

I've bought many an ASUS product. A dozen or so disc drives, 2 motherboards. Not a single issue yet.
I'm mostly into PC games now, and I was in the market for a laptop so I gave the ROG series the nod over Alienware.
.. I'll stop short of saying it was a mistake beacuse the specs of this machine whipped comparable Alienware machines up and down the block.
... but, sad to say, this machine is getting returned.
First, graphics issues. Graphics card was crashing from the start. Constant messages that it had failed and came back online.
Second; communications issues. WOULD NOT pair with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Spent about 4 hours of reading and reinstalling drivers to rectify the problem.
Then came the Win10 restart blue-screens. That was the last straw for me. Didn't care to resolve whatever was causing that issue.
Nice machine otherwise. Nice backlit keyboard. Great specs, as I said above. A tad cheap construction-wise. An absolute fingerprint MAGNET!
Overall I was pleased aside from the constant crashes and time I spent with driver updates.
Perhaps you won't have the issues I had. But for me, a very disappointing purchase. $1400 is a lot of dough for a machine that crashes within 45 days.

Almost perfect...

This is far closer to a 4.5 than a 4 in my opinion, but there is one major caveat. First of all, I have the GL551 from last year and while I love that laptop, I didn't get the IPS screen. Big mistake for a graphic designer who does a lot of color dependent work. So, I bought this computer, which has the IPS screen and it's great...ish. Back-light bleed was a major concern for me and initially I didn't see any. Phew. Then, I closed and opened the computer a few times and the cover of the computer (the metal cover) is sorta flimsy over the screen, so the screen can sorta bend if you're not careful (and sometimes even if you are). Grabbing the screen by the bezel is strictly a no-no as it will create back-light bleed issues. It's the only disappointing part of a truly excellent computer. But for me, it's sort of a big deal. Be aware.
Minus this one significant factor, it's a very, very nice laptop.

I shopped around looking for a 15" laptop with both 1TB Hard Drive and a Solid State Drive. Found the perfect one - Asus ROG at Best Buy. Super fast start up and loading, great graphics, perfect for gaming yet totally handles the demands of my work projects... its the best of both worlds.

Good midrange gaming laptop

This is a good midrange gaming laptop. The one complaint I have is that Geforce Experience takes forever to use. To make any changes to your settings or update the driver you have to wait for about ten minutes for the program to connect correctly. It just sits there thinking for about ten minutes. I have read about others who have had similar problems with Asus computers. This computer suffers from the same defect. I had already bought two other laptops and returned them for other problems, and I was a bit tired of shopping around, so I decided I could live with ten minutes of extra time for each update. But if you plan on launching Geforce Experience often, I would avoid Asus computers in general.

Expected a bit more bang for the buck spent on this item. It does have a very quick start up time, battery life not the best. Color graphics a bit disappointing as using for photo editing. Speed and storage good for price. Would love if had a higher picture quality resolution to hook up a better external monitor with better graphics. I am not a gamer so can not comment on that aspect. Sufficient for higher speed everyday use, but would not recommend for photo editing. Disappointed with color quality, black color and ghosting on screen. Very attractive looking laptop. Nice to have backlit keys, would prefer in color other than red as for me it is not the best color for me to see well in the dark which is when I need it for photo editing. Touchpad I had read prior to purchase having issues with being harder to the touch and this is very true, which is just an FYI if you use this feature, I typically has a track ball or pad. Even when on sale still a bit pricey for what you get.

I was in the market for a new laptop and shopped around online and in some local retail stores. The hardware specs are perfect on this machine to suit most peoples' needs for high end gaming and graphics work in Photoshop, After Effects, ECT.
Pros:
-It runs cool due to a robust fan system and is quiet.
-Decent battery life for the number of cells and display size.
-Solid state master drive boots up in seconds, the storage disk drive is relatively fast and is easily upgradable in the future if another SSD is desired.
-Easily upgradable RAM if more is desired, 16 GB is plenty for most.
-Comfortable keyboard (with number pad) for computer size, good for people with large hands.
-The keyboard backlighting system is adjustable in intensity.
-Relatively light weight and low profile for a graphics machine.
-Low amount of bloatware.
-Plenty of ports.
-The battery recharges fairly fast.
Cons:
-MacAfee pre-installed, but that's Intel's fault and it's easily remedied.
-The display is a little dark, but clear with nice color range.
-It's a fingerprint magnet, but what laptop isn't these days?

Great Laptop for editing

Unlike most people who buy this laptop, I bought it for editing on programs like Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. instead of gaming. Gaming and video editing pretty much require the same type of power, storage, and ports. I'm not a fan of Mac OS, so I was looking for a Windows Computer that'd be able to handle video editing. This Asus hasn't disappointed me yet. It's able to run the programs really smoothly and quickly, and exports the videos in good time. The graphics are great, and I'm able to scrub through videos without rendering. One thing I'm not crazy about is the sound. I tested the Lenovo Y700 and the sound system was so great, and this one is just OK. When I'm editing videos I have to turn the sound all the way up to make sure there aren't any mistakes and to just be able to hear it clearly to be honest. Its not a huge deal to me. I don't know how the gamers feel about it. The keyboard and mouse are good. Sometimes I feel like I have to click the screen 15 times to login to the computer, which is mildly annoying when you're just trying to get in the computer. It doesn't allow you to not have a password on the computer and you have to put in the password before you can get in, so you can see how that'd be annoying. The keyboard also absorbs the grease from your hands pretty easily so I would look out for that, and wipe it down often. But this i7 processor, Nvidia chip, and SSD definitely make editing super easy and fast, and the response time on the computer itself is great. So I would definitely recommend for my Windows lover and video editors.

Runs Great - Loud Fan

I have had this laptop for a month now and I purchased it exclusively for gaming. It can run games very well at high fps and decent graphic settings so far. The only problem I have with it is the fan. The fan vent is on the left side and is extremely loud and hot when running fps games like Overwatch or big MMO's on high settings. I also don't like how the headphone jack is on the right side of the laptop, but that's a personal preference.
Loving the laptop so far. Will review again in a few months!
