Need a pc so instead of building one I decided to purchase a laptop. I did sooooooo much research to the point I spent more time in being indecisive than anything, but didn’t check on the prices so much. Once I started checking prices, Best Buy did it for me. This laptop is very powerful. Perfect machine for so much you can do with.

Great gaming laptop with a few minor minuses!

With the Intel i7-9750H and the Nvidia GTX2070, this laptop is a gaming powerhouse! I removed the original 500GB Intel NVMe and installed a Samsung 970 Evo plus 1TB. Now it really flies when doing just about any task! Even on power saver setting! The keyboard is good and the screen is beautiful, fast and bright. The fans can get loud when gaming and the temps do get somewhat hot but totally under control! When you think about how thin this machine is and how powerful the components are, you must expect some heat but the Asus cooling system is up to the task!

I love everything about the Strix Hero III 17.3" I use it primarily as a gaming laptop but this can also do some serious multimedia work with some easy upgrades such as adding an extra 16GB of RAM to bring it up to 32 GB.
Pros:
- The RTX 2070 is a beast and this is NOT the max Q version so it can actually out perform 2080 max Q's in some games.
- The keyboard lighting and feel
- Lighting all around the laptop
- Ports on the back of the laptop to keep cables away from the sides of the laptop when gaming.
- 10 key num pad. I needed this for some light work I do on the laptop.
- 144hz buttery smooth display
Cons:
- Fan noise can get loud, not a bid deal with headphones on.
- Can throttle under heavy gaming, but is easily fixed if you know what you're doing and undervolt the CPU a little.

Solid Performance with drawbacks

Solid specs but expect the fans to get loud especially when running this in "Turbo". Speakers are decent but you will definitely want to use headphones if you plan to get in a serious session. That said, the full, fat 2070 will definitely take advantage of the 144hz panel on almost any competitive esport game. More demanding competitive games will have a hard time hitting 120fps even at 1080p medium or low just because of the thermal throttling. But that is to be expected from almost any gaming laptop. All in all, a good laptop but I wouldn't pay retail. I picked this up at a discount so it was definitely worth it.

Finally, Desktop Power and Speed in a Laptop.

I became a YUGE ASUS fan about 5 years ago when I built my first desktop computer. (Z-87 Pro Motherboard) I did a ton of study and comparisons on components, and ASUS blew the all other manufacturers away. Two years later my son and I built one for him using an ASUS ROG Motherboard.
My desktop was built for video editing and photo editing. Both Desktops are blazing fast and still put most desktops to shame. We both can upgrade when we want and love the flexibility, tinkering and upgrading.
When it came time to replace my 12-year-old laptop, (not a typo – 12 years old!) there was only one option. Sure, I looked at others, and MSI was considered, as it too was designed for “creators”. I’m not a gamer by any means. (I’ll leave the gaming to my son.) I, on the other hand love video production and photo editing. And by looking at different system requirements, this ASUS ROG Strix Hero III checked off all the marks, including a beefy NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 for rendering.
Kudos go to Best Buy for not only price matching a local competitor but also getting this shipped out and in my hands 4 days before the scheduled delivery date. (Although, living in Atlanta, it was not surprising a local warehouse had this in stock, cutting the shipping time to just two days after ordering.) Judging from the current price, this Christmas purchase timed just right.
I’ve been able to play and put this machine through its paces for several months now and absolutely LOVE this Laptop . It’s just as fast, if not faster than my “DREAM_MACHINE” I built 5 years ago, but also has the Coffee Lake processor (i7-9750H) to take advantage of Windows 10 Pro features. (Although Pro isn’t a deal breaker, but I do like having those limited features I never use. ;-P)
While I thought the RGB keyboard was cool, I didn’t realize how much I’d enjoy it. As an early – EARLY riser, it’s nice to be able to come downstairs, open it up and be able to see the keyboard while keeping the remainder of the room dark and quiet.
Functionality of the keyboard is also superb. Very well-spaced, more like a traditional keyboard, but quiet and soft to the touch. (I’m now looking for a similar feel for my desktop, I like this keyboard THAT much.)
I also find the smaller bezel around the screen impressive. I went with the 17.3” screen for larger real estate. Removing the camera from the bezel enables minimal size, giving it just enough girth to make it firm, but super clean. The lack of a camera on a laptop could be a deal breaker for some, but I’ve personally never used it on my old laptop, so it’s not even an issue here. The screen is also amazingly sharp. It’s 144Hz display is utterly amazing and enjoyable to spend hours in front of, which I often do. It’s light years ahead of my old laptop which would give me headaches and I’d find my eyesight getting blurry after prolonged use.
Ports are minimal but sufficient. HDMI, several USB 3.1 and USB C connector. The USB C charges up my iPhone and tablets much faster than the 3.0 Boost technology on the Z-87 Pro motherboard. Communication and transfer is also faster via USB C.
I’m not a big fan of track pads – so it hasn’t been used. Appears responsive, but there’s really nothing I can add here. I personally use a mouse when working on both desktop and laptop.
I thought for sure I’d have the extra 2.5 SSD in by this point but don’t. I only bring this up because it was a core feature I wanted for flexibility and space. I once had an older laptop that had space for 2 drives and loved the extra space and separation of files. The extra SSD would be designated for movies, raw video, photos, and music. Much like the SSD I have on the desktop and used in the much older laptop.
Which brings us to the graphics card. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with 8GB GDDR5. This is one of the few laptops that can match the rendering speed of my desktop. Like I said, I’m not a gamer but a creator. This handles editing and rendering on Davinci Resolve just as well as my desktop can and that’s impressive. It was a major check mark and deal breaker for me. Some may be able to save money and go with the 1060, with only 6GB and be just as happy, but the 1070 with 8GB was really the only option for me, and very happy with the purchase.
On the down side however, when this beast is chugging along and maxing out – the fans can get a bit loud. The temps have been able to maintain a very safe and reasonable range, but I’ve never heard such power trying to keep things cool. Much like some of the games out there, I can imagine these can push the components to its limits. I’ve done the same with editing and rendering. This is a trade off I’m not sure can be overcome, because you want that power and speed – which personally I’m thrilled with.
And lastly is the Keystone. I didn’t think I’d use it but found out it’s the only way to save my settings. Mainly my RGB colors on my keyboard. When I would first update and/or reboot the keyboard would go back to this funky rainbow color. Looks cool, but not something I particularly want. I want to see the keyboard, and have it set for my own optimal viewing. So, I dug it out of the box, installed it and voilà.
Not since my personal build of my desktop have I been so happy with a computer purchase. This work of art is exactly what I wanted. Desktop performance in a compact – portable size. I had fawned over the older G series for years, but they were just too thick and bulky. Kudos to Asus for finally making powerful laptop that looks and feels like a laptop.

Went from an Asus g751 and the difference is night and day! It has a beautiful screen and really makes red dead 2’s graphics pop. Never had any overheating issues. The fans are fairly loud but not annoyingly

I had the recent Macbooks, Dell XPS 13 all top spec ... then i switched to this! Wow what a machine. The perfect laptop. Longest run time and lightest weight of any 17 inch laptop. Single thread is higher on the asus. Also LOVE the asus apps to adjust battery charge and so on. If you need a work laptop, don't play top notch computer games, this is the laptop to get. It is so light it is ridiculous and battery lasts longer than any other box. Love this machine and I am a power user!

Bought this as a backup to business desktop. I run a lot of graphics. So far so good. Very fast. Have not downloaded business software yet. Windows 10 is a new experience. Like Windows 7 better but that has nothing to do with the computer.

Laptop is fast. It plays games with ease. Doesn't feel well made though. But, laptop's are obsolete as soon as you buy them so it wasn't a big deal for me.

Great Laptop - Watch the fans

This laptop is much lighter than I was anticipating, which I quite appreciate. The speed is great and the display is great. The only thing to watch out for is the noise of the fans, which on standard settings can be louder than what you're used to, but this is easily mitigated with headphone usage, plus the built in software allows you to quiet them at the cost of speed (good when watching movies, i.e.). The only real issue I've had was updating the keyboard caused it to be nonfunctional until I installed a hotfix from the MyAsus app. Had to use the onscreen keyboard in accessibility settings to get to this without a physical keyboard.
