The camera has a LED in case you are sitting in the dark. It has good picture/video quality. The start-up time from sleep is approx. 5 sec, form hibernate approx. 11 sec, and from complete shutdown approx. 20 sec. Touchscreen comes in handy with the interactive properties of Windows 8, DON'T GET WINDOWS 8 WITHOUT A TOUCHSCREEN DESKTOP OR LAPTOP. Finally, this ultrabook is conveniently lightweight and the slim design and keyboard have a great look (kinda looks like a Macbook). Two things missing: A Back-lit keyboard and a DVD drive.

Bought this for my daughter as a graduation present. I have owned several Ausus laptops and I think they are a reliable and dependable machine. The SSD drive boots up in 5 seconds, the screen is quite bright and even at 14" (1" smaller than my old one) was highly readable and worked fine. As others have noted, you need to download the updated driver for the track pad which was a little jerky until doing so. All in all this is a really nice system that looks beautiful and does what it is supposed to. Although there was not any bloat wear installed, I was disappointed to see McAfee was pre-loaded, and removing it from control panel did not do the trick, I had to download the McAfee removal tool form their website to get Windows defender restored as the primary virus protector. Another con is that the unit feels a little sloppy, not complaining about the weight, but the keyboard is kind of soft and mushy, and it just doesn't feel like a solidly made unit. Still, for $559 no complaints. The last thing is this is a fingerprint magnet.

A Great Way to Use Windows 8

This computer has done everything I could ask of it and excels in so many ways, I can't even begin to describe what's great about it. Touch screen, ease of use, keyboard, super clear display, surprisingly good sound quality and volume. I would prefer a bigger screen, but I can live with this one. I do NOT like the touchpad at all. It has no redeeming qualities. It doesn't have a number pad, so when I need to use a number pad, I use an external keyboard. And, of course, I use a wireless mouse with it, in lieu of the touchpad. Even with its negatives, I like this computer, and I would recommend it without reservation.

I was in a hurry to purchase for work, so the BB price was reasonable even though later I found much better deals else where for retail. But I am still happy with the purchase. BAD: the HDMI port aluminium trimming is defective and bent, please make sure to inspect carefully before start installing software! It was too late for me since I already finished configuring the PC by the time i found out..

I bought the Laptop for my wife, at first she didn't like it because it was Window 8 but after she messed around with it for a while, she could tell the difference between her old computer and the new one. With that being said, her love for me increased, as she also fell in love with the laptop. A long battery life and easy to navigate.

I've had it for 4 months, and I am on my second total failure. I hope they warranty it, this hasn't been right from day one. I'm a big ASUS fan, but this hybrid model is clearly not well executed here.

I needed to upgrade my HP laptop as it was beginning to play up so I began searching for a Windows 8 Ultrabook. I decided on the Asus and have not been disappointed. A good price for a nice 14" screened icore3 touch screen. I purchased a portable DVD writer for under $25 and I'm as pleased as can be. If only the keyboard was backlit it would be perfect.

I read a lot of reviews about ASUS laptops before this purchase and my biggest concern was in a lot of those reviews, people complained about wireless issues. Being an IT professional, I wasn't too concerned but sure enough, right out the box it refused to stay connected to the wireless network in my office so I can see why those systems were getting poor reviews. I tried a number of tricks including installing various driver versions with no luck. However, it seemed to work just fine when I got home with it, so it might have been a compatibility issue with the access points in the office. It seems like this is not an uncommon problem with the Atheros wireless device in the unit based on my research. Hopefully someone releases an updated driver to solve this issue. Otherwise, it's a very sharp system. It looks great if you care about that type of thing. Touch pad is nice and large which is nice for a person with big hands like me. Keys on the the keyboard are pretty thin, but that's the case with most ultrabooks. I'm not a huge fan of the screen because the viewing angle isn't great and I hate the glossy reflective style of screen that is so popular now, but it gets the job done. Like most new systems at this point, it comes with Windows 8 which is what it is. I'm not a huge fan but if you give it enough time, you'll get used to it. I'm not going to reduce my review of this because of Windows 8 - it's not the laptop's fault that Windows 8 has a bit of a learning curve and changes a few things from what we are all used to. In short, very nice minus the very real wireless issue which is probably fixable via future software updates.

This is a great laptop for the price. Windows 8 interface takes a little time to get used to, but other than that, everything works well. The battery takes a while to fully charge while the laptop is in use (eg when I am watching a movie, but that is to be expected), but it does remain charged for about four hours. The build is very sturdy, not made of plastic like other laptops. Sound quality of speakers is good. I see that others have been complaining about internet connection, the touch screen, and touchpad. As for the internet connection and touch screen, I have found that both work perfectly. I encountered a few problems with the touchpad initially, but I went on the Asus website and downloaded an Asus Smart Gesture driver and then adjusted a few of the scroll settings. Works perfectly now, and it only took a few minutes to configure. The few downsides of this laptop....no backlight on the keyboard, and the battery isn't user removable. However, I do not find these to be major inconveniences. Overall, if you are looking for a fairly inexpensive touch screen laptop with a midsize screen, this is a great deal and I highly recommend it!

    Deceptively Bad

As with some of the other reviewers, when I first saw the laptop and the specs, along with the price, I thought it would be a great buy (Ultrabook, touch screen, sleek styling, etc.) The truth is, at times this laptop can become virtually unusable. It's often very slow (when I'm even able to get on the internet) and extremely tempermental when it comes to doing what probably should be the most basic of all laptop actions: connecting to wifi. Doesn't matter how great the router is, it will consistently drop the connection and sometimes take minutes to reestablish. Although my track pad works, it can also be cumbersome to use, and finger actions on it probably stopped working after the first week. If I had to give it one pro, the touch screen seems to work pretty well. Other than that, it's a pretty expensive paper weight. Sorry Asus - I'm sure you probably do make some good computers, but I can't see myself ever purchasing one of your products again. Don't let its Macbook looks and low price tag fool you like it did to me. Stay away from this one.

Be warned. I'm not the one to give bad reviews, but I felt compelled to do so with this one. The laptop was great out of the box, a clean stylish look with a quality build. The keyboard is one of the best I've typed on. Sound quality is terrific. But that's where its greatness ends. Its a good price for a touchscreen, you cant beat that. But there a far too many issues. For one, the touchpad is very annoying as the smart gesture fails to response. Two touch scrolling, and left and right edge swiping (essentials for windows8) stop working on and off. I thought I had a faulty laptop but it seems to be the case with other people's laptops as read on the internet. The wireless connection turns on and off also. This ridiculously annoying especially if you are doing something important LIKE TAKING AN ONLINE QUIZ and such. For all these faults, I still like the laptop so I will return this one and buy another to see if the problems don't arise.

I bought this computer on June 2013 and it worked very well for about 1.5 years. One day I closed the lid and the computer never came back up. The computer would power on for about a second and simply die, it wouldn't even load the screen. I took it to an ASUS repair center and they diagnosed that the screen, motherboard and flex, whatever flex is, were damaged and needed to be replaced. The budget for replacement of those items is well above $300. Very disappointed with this computer. Yes, it was not expensive but you don't expect that it will completely die on you like it did. I lost many valuable documents and pictures.

I've got to say as I'm writing this review I am not a satisfied customer but my faults with it could just be with my particular PC. I guess I'll start with the good. The build quality is fantastic, metal body, brushed aluminum lid that is attractive but is a finger print magnet. It had Windows 8 which i love. The touch screen gives it a plus because Windows 8 has an advantage when its on a touch PC. This is were i transition to the bad. Like I said, this ultrabook has a touch screen but my touch screen has stopped working 3 times since i got it 8 days ago. Also the trackpad gestures stoped working twice, i of course reinstalled the driver and it seems to be working fine as I write this review. However, this has a Macbook trackpad that has the buttons built in the trackpad which i find annoying. The first two might just be my ultrabook which is why I am giving this a 4 star review, if i didnt have these problems I'd give it somewhere between 4.75 and 5 stars. I am returning my ultrabook to best buy tomorrow and I'm probably getting the same one again. If it works better or worse than this one I will update my review.

    Returned after a few days

I purchased this computer after seeing decent reviews and looking at it in the store. I got it home and it was super easy to set up and I really liked the touch screen on it. My friend, a former geek squad member, told me that it was a good computer for a good price. I also liked the size and that it was super portable and even though I wasn't looking for it, the touch screen was awesome. The work I do on the computer requires a lot of typing. This is something that you can't really test out too much in the store. I didn't like the feel of the keys. They were a bit rough feeling and as I typed more, certain keys started to stick or not type the letters the first time I hit the key. The touch pad clicking was also very noisy. It felt kind of cheap, and for $600, I don't think it should feel cheap even though that is relatively a good computer price point. I felt these issues were small or might resolve with time and they weren't enough to push me to return the computer. After five days of having this computer, I started to hear a clicking noise inside of the computer. I muted the sound, but it was still there. I contacted the company and my friend and they both thought that it might be a bad hard drive, but would need to be tested. I decided to just exchange the computer for a different brand. While this isn't a bad computer, there are better ones in this price range.

You can't beat the price of this Ultrabook. The build quality of this laptop is great. Aluminum design and a mac book style keyboard are giving it a premium outfit. The keyboard is great to type on and the aluminum finish just feels great and looks plain awesome. The display of this Ultrabook is good but nothing eye-popping either but totally satisfying for me. It could be a little brighter with a higher resolution but again we are talking about an Ultrabook for 499$. The sound quality is better the any other Laptop I had before and also extremely loud for those who need it. This actually leads to the first negative point I have discovered. The laptop hard drive and fan can be noticeable loud. It doesn't bother me I just noticed it. Battery life is average with 4 hours of web surfing. If you want an affordable and good Ultrabook this one is the way to go. Btw I have neither experienced any wireless issues nor touchpad smart gesture issues and the touchscreen is very precise and makes an awesome windows 8 experience.

I hate this ultrabook with a burning passion. I purchased this for the purpose of school work. So Microsoft office and basic internet browsing. Right out of the box, it had major Wi-Fi connectivity problems. It recognizes the networks and says it's connected but has an exclamation point on the icon, signaling that there's a problem. So I'll be able to use the internet for maybe 5 minutes and then it will suddenly disconnect from the network. I promise you it's not a router problem unless the router at my house, Starbucks, school, library, hotel, friend's house and so on all have a problem. Yes I've troubleshooted it, called ASUS help line, factory reset the entire thing and it still has the same problem. I hardly have ANY media stored on it, leaving plenty of hardware space and surprise, it's still slow and unable to connect. On top of that, the build quality is truly sad. The plastic makes the most hideous bending sound every time I open it. I kid you not, I could snap this in half with my bare hands, not because it's a thin ultrabook, but because it's so fricken cheap. I am writing this review after owning and using this laptop daily for about a year and a half now. I was so excited to have this laptop, it looked gorgeous, it's lightweight, touch screen and all that jazz. But as a matter of fact, I will not be selling it because I'm going to throw it in a pit of fire and get a MacBook. I've absolutely resented apple products because they're so expensive, but after my experience with Asus, I'm ready to throw my money at apple. DO. NOT. BUY. THIS. You have been warned.

      Dear Valued Customer,

I am sorry to hear that the WIFI is not functioning properly. There are somethings you can try to see to see if it resolves the issue. First, you can try to re-install the wireless drivers to see if that makes a difference. Also, resetting the router tends to resolve many connectivity issues. You can email me directly at [email protected] so that I can provide detail instructions to reload the drivers or if you have any general questions regarding the unit.

We were looking for a laptop for my daughter in college, where many people have macs. I have a Toshiba ultrabook that was over $700, and we didn't want to spend that much. This is very fast, the touchscreen is easy to use, it is light weight for transportability, and a good price. My husband was against the touch screen since he thought it would be the first to break, but we learned even if it did, it would still operate the old way. She loves how fast it is and the touch screen was easy for her to learn. We considered another one, but the screen was smaller than this, and this is the smallest we would want to go.
