Decent Phone At A Reasonable Price

Design:
This phone definitely feels more premium than it actually looks. It has a great feeling aluminum alloy body with a 2.5D curved glass. It feels fairly lightweight. It also has a fingerprint sensor which is very responsive. It is great to see a phone with fingerprint sensor at this price range.
Display/Audio:
Overall, the display is excellent. The screen is nice and bright. The resolution of 1920 x 720 works well for this phone. The audio is decent enough. The sound is faithful at low volumes but can be distorted at louder volumes. The outdoor mode can get volumes to a decent level. Also, the placement of the speakers on the back can be accidently blocked with a hand so be careful.
OS/UI:
It is great to have a phone out of the box with Marshmallow. The UI, ZenUI, is a bit more difficult to measure. The UI is mixed with a combination of bloatware, useful features, and annoying quirks. Depending on the user, your mileage with the UI will vary greatly.
Camera:
The camera is decent for the price. The camera can take decent photos in well-lit conditions. However, too much light can cause a lot of noise. The low-light is fairly bad, but most phones struggle to do well in this category. However, it does a decent job for being under $200. Recordings and pictures were better than expected with a decent set of controls.
Battery/Charging:
The battery life on this device is great. It can easily get someone through a day easily with moderate usage. The main issue is that there is no quick/fast charging. On average, it takes 3.5+ hours to fully charge this phone with no usage. However, it is expected fact since the battery is so large. Would have been nice if it used USB type C as an early adopter but is understandable at this price.
Storage/Memory:
The base storage is a bit lacking at 16GB. However, it is really good to know that the storage is expandable up to 64GB which is decent enough. For me, the killer was the 2GB ram. At mid-2016 and onward, 3GB should be the budget minimum for ram, since that is the highest amount that this chipset accepts.
Processor/Performance:
The processor, at this price range, is acceptable. The MediaTek MT6737 was able to perform at some moderately high demanding apps with some frame rate drops. As such, it is decent with all basic functions. I would not recommend for users that require lots of processing power for his or her apps.
Other (Calls, Compatibility, Accessories, Firmware/Updates):
Call quality was great. No issues or distortions. This phone is GSM only. It does not work with CDMA (Sprint, U.S. Cellular, Verizon). This package does not come with accessories. Best Buy made a mistake in the listings. There is very little 3rd party support for things like cases and screen protectors other than Chinese vendors. Asus is notoriously slow in releasing firmware updates. However, it is supposed to get an Android Nougat Update 7.0.0 in Q1 2017.
Conclusion:
There is no doubt that this is a decent phone. However, the question is: is this the phone for you? It really depends on your preferences. People that require high levels of computing power should look elsewhere, but everyone else can find something they like here. Is the best value? That is a hard question to answer as companies like Motorola, Honor/Huawei, ZTE, OnePlus, and Alcatel have brought tremendous value to the budget smartphone market. Because of this, I would say you are getting what you paid for. That isn't necessarily a bad thing as the bar has been significantly raised this year (2016).
My suggestion is to choose based on your needs and willingness to pay. 2016/2017 has shown that you can't go wrong no matter what price range you choose.
FYI, it occasionally goes on sale for 129.99.

I have a Blade Spark and got this for my wife. This has NFC but can't handle 64GB memory card.
Cases are a must and they are hard to find in physical stores.
Good camera, good sound, good battery. For the price it is a good choice.

Mid-range phone at a budget price

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I bought this phone back in April and have been using it for a few months now.
The specs are decidedly midrange despite the phone's budget price. The quality of the screen is excellent indoors and at least tolerable in sunlight. The rear camera takes amazing pictures in auto and HDR modes under most lighting conditions. The autofocus feels quick and responsive, and the camera still manages to take a sharp picture even in my shaky hands. The low-light mode is a bit grainy, but manages to produce pictures bright enough to see clearly even in lighting dim enough that I struggle to see.
The big compromises in this device are in performance - while it's more than enough for social media, browsing, and video playback, the phone struggles with more demanding apps and games. If you are planning to make this a gaming device, I'd move on to something with a more powerful processor. For me, this isn't an issue, I have my desktop computer for gaming, and don't really feel the need to do anything beyond the most casual games on a phone.
Wifi connectivity is only single band 802.11b/g/n, which is understandable for the price, but a dual-band chipset would have definitely been a nice to have. LTE reception is good, often rivaling more expensive devices from better known manufacturers.
The battery capacity is impressive, but the phone does not use it as efficiently as possible - while you can easily get 2+days of usable life from the phone with what I consider normal usage, you can easily drain the capacity down with a single day of heavy use if you are the type that never lets the screen turn off. Be aware that the charging is slow enough that it can take 3-4 hours for a full charge - not as big of an issue with the large battery capacity but you will want to be in the habit of charging overnight so that you have a full charge when leaving home.
Overall, I feel like the phone is the best device all around at its price point, and I've received an OTA update to Nougat in the last day as a very unexpected but welcome surprise that I feel makes it an even stronger pick.

WiFi & Bluetooth not working, warranty not honored

I ordered this phone online from Best Buy on 7/31/2017 and received it on 8/3/2017, everything worked fine. After 6 weeks later, the WiFI and Bluetooth functions were not working but basic phone functions( call/receive call, camera, mail through LTE, etc.) still worked fine. I updated the software and did factory reset, the WiFi and Bluetooth functions still not working. So, I went to Best Buy asking for help and Best Buy said it was passed two weeks exchanging period and I need contacted ASUS customer service. I called ASUS USA customer support on 9/20/2017 reported the problem and ASUS customer support issued a RMA also sent me the email for the RMA instruction. ASUS provides the new phone with one year warranty and the day that I reported the problem was not even passed 60 days yet. I sent the phone to ASUS RMA department at Grapevine, TX on 9/21/2017 and indicated the WiFi & Bluetooth functions had problem. On 9/29/2017, I received email from ASUS customer service said there was “liquid damage” on the motherboard, the “damaged” motherboard image was attached within ASUS email and indicated “Your RMA was received; however there is a delay in processing as there is ( Motherboard) which is not covered under the ASUS manufacturer warranty.” The email also asking for $146.40 charges for the repair. I called back ASUS customer service on 10/2/2017 asked them to honor the one year warranty, I told them that the phone was used under the normal condition, never dropped in the water nor under the humid weather condition, and the phone was spotless not even has single scratch on it. The motherboard damage might caused by manufacturer defect and it should be repaired free under the warranty. But they just kept replied the physic damaged motherboard was not coved by warranty and nothing they could do besides return the “not working” phone or I paid the repair charges.
I just cannot believe the big company like ASUS will NOT honor their own warranty for the product just used for less than 60 days. I think people should think twice if they like to purchase any ASUS products in the future.

Size and look are typical for this price range. Screen is decently sharp and bright. Lower resolution keeps prices down and extends battery life. Memory is 2gb ram and 16gb storage, really the minimum needed to even turn the phone on these days. Processor isn’t fast but at least is not a 200 series snapdragon like some budget phones use. Long battery life is, of course, the biggest draw.

Exceptional Phone for The Price

This phone definitely far surpassed what I expected from a phone costing only $150. The phone feels great in my hand and has an incredibly receptive touchscreen and nearly instant fingerprint scanner. The camera can take beautiful photos but does need a steady hand. The screen quality rivals that of far more expensive phones the display is bright and attractive to look (and of course can be dimmed). The processing power is somewhat weaker than high end android phones and using intensive apps it showed here and there but for a phone of its price it isn't really a problem and performs as fast or faster than an Iphone for regular day to day tasks only in games does it lag very slightly, and the power of the phone can be adjusted to give it either higher performance or longer battery life. The battery life as the phone boasts is really incredible it can last me from 6 am to midnight doing homework and looking things up on it. What I would say is if you have tiny hands and small pockets this phone would not be particularly easy to carry in a pocket and you would either need to take it in hand or in a bag, I am pretty tall so it fit's in my pockets and feels good in my hand but for a smaller person I could definitely see it being cumbersome although increasingly phones are like this it is similar in size to the Iphone 6 plus but I like the proportions of this phone better as it is easier to hold in one hand. The other minus which I encountered but I am not sure if it is the phone itself or my account but I can;'t seem to get many games to run on the phone but I would not make this a deal breaker. Over all it is a really great phone for the low price and I would definitely recommend it over an Iphone or Samsung Galaxy as you will save a ton of money and will still be very satisfied. Also unless you have a need for tons of talk text and data ( and I mean tons all the time) I would Definitely recommend the TracFone network, I only pay about 8-12 dollars a month on my phone depending on how much data I use and I get better reception than my dads Iphone, I even get reception in the middle of nowhere hiking. So If you need a general quality phone I would go with the Zenfone 3 Max.

First, let me say that I only purchased this phone a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t had a chance to really look at the manual, so for the most part I’m just using the basics. I got this phone to replace a MotoG4 which I really liked until it went on the fritz right after the warranty expired. This ASUS cost a little less than the MotoG, so I didn’t expect it to perform as well. However, the screen is bright and crisp, and the rear camera, although having the identical specs as the Moto’s, is considerably better. The ASUS is good looking (I got the white/stainless), so nice that I got a clear phone case. In the end however, this is a phone, and that’s where the ASUS falls short. Reception on calls is poor. So is music quality, but if you use earbuds or remote speakers this won’t be an issue since you’re bypassing the phone’s speakers. If call quality is important, you may want to look at other phones, but if you can accept poor call quality for an otherwise great phone for a reasonable price, than this may be the phone for you.

Asus Zenfone 3 Max has great quality build material. The battery life is excellent but excessive use still drains it pretty fast. I love the dual sim and FM radio capacility. The camera is good but slow in low light environment. It does everything you could imagine for any Android phone. The downsides are sometime the touchscreen cannot register my touch if I touch too soft, sometime it's slow due to limited 2gb ram but with the boosting software that comes with helps most of the time, and don't forget to update to latest Android to improve fingerprint scan performance. Overall at this price point, I am satisfy.

I was so impressed by this phone. I purchased the phone in July of this past year. For 150, this is an awesome phone. The camera is very good in optimal lighting conditions. It is not so good in low light situations, but a powerful flash bulb makes up for that. It has a low light mode, but the quality is gone when you use that feature. When you are taking pictures of people, it takes very good shots. Colors are overall very vibrant. Overall phone processing power is adequate for everyday use and does not get easily bogged down. However, if you plan on taking photos with your phone, make sure to get an sd card. As the memory fills up, the phone gets bogged down. You will notice a big difference in performance after taking over 100 photos and a video or two. This phone's screen is very good for the price. The colors are a little washed out, but this is to be expected. The fingerprint sensor is quick for a budget phone. I was pleasantly surprised to find this out after multiple uses. It is accurate and most times the phone will sense your fingerprint on the first try. I love the feature that allows you to secure your phone when you get a call. The phone allows you to require a fingerprint to unlock the device before being able to answer a call. Don't worry, if the sensor doesn't work you can input the backup password you set. I find this helpful for when my phone rings and it is not with me. No one can answer my calls, only I can. Gesture controls are good but not phenomenal. Double tap to wake and sleep is a hit or miss, and drawing the letters on the screen for the app that you want to open can be finicky. As I said, this phone may not be the best phone period but it is a really good competitor for the cellphone market.

My dad's S4 took a dump on him so we needed a replacement but didn't want to shell out a bunch of money for a smart phone. He likes to occasionally use facebook and youtube and this fit the bill. Camera is okay with good lighting. Phone is responsive and smooth enough to where it doesn't but him any. He's used slower smart phones and he didn't complain about this one. Screen is bright enough and clear enough as well. Over all a decent phone for the price, offers a lot for how cheap it is. Asus is a reputable company, they make laptops, computer parts and many other things so I wouldn't hesitate to give their phones a try if you're on a budget.

I bought this phone based on feedback from other buyers and after a week of research.
1.) Performance almost same as iPhone & Samsung Galaxy (I didn't find any issues with 4G LTE network in my area), using phone for normal purpose, checking emails, GPS or YouTube for past 1 month.
2.) Battery life is better than both iPhone and Galaxy I used in past. One full charge lasts me full day & night (24 hours+) with normal usage, phone calls, texting and WhatsApp usage.
3.) Affirms my belief in Asus quality and iPhone 5, iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy phones I have (from work and personal) are grossly over rated and over priced for the price.
Thanks.

I have had this phone for over 1 year. So doing a review now will put better perspective. For everday use it's awesome. battery life with constant use lasts all day, non constant use couple of days. When you use it to watch videos it does drain the battery especially when in higher pixels. So the lower the better. For affordability, it works. It's not the top of it's class, but it's very functional. It can store up to a 64g micro sd card which i can put a lot more songs on. Now for the things not so great? The camera quality when taking selfie pics/face time camera. It's a little bit lower resolution but thats what i kind of expect, and volume. Which i thinkit could be louder. Speakers are alright, but not the greatest. Internal storage for apps not so much. Haven't figured out how yet to switch from the internal storage to the sd card, im not a tech wiz. If you want a phone that's pretty decent just for everyday things: calling, watching videos, music, games, etc. Plus asus is pretty good since ive boughtsome of their products before. All in all it's a pretty decent phone.

The phone itself is good at the price point. Display quality and call quality are excellent. but don't expect a blazing fast processor experience on this phone as you can not get super performance at this price. Battery life is amazing. i am not a heavy user and it can last me one full week without charging.

This phone is a good phone for its price (at the time). But be prepared for a little disappointment as this is not a high-end phone. Not to be confused with something like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phones, appearance and build are above average, if not excellent. It feels good in the hand and the weight makes it feels well built. It has a feature that most common phones don't have, which is a Dual SIM slot. This means that you can use two SIM cards at the same time. This is useful if you travel, having your US SIM (AT&T or T-Mobile) and that of another country. Aside from the usual Android features, there are some sacrifices. This phone does NOT have NFC. If you're a fan of Android Pay, this may be a deal breaker. Also, the Dual SIM ability has a trade-off, in which one of the SIM slots is also the MicroSD card slot. While you can use this on a business trip to keep in touch with home and the office, you sacrifice space for pictures or other media (and vice versa). While the phone has some positive points, it does have some negatives. My advice is to do some research to decide if this phone fits your needs. Otherwise, it's a nice phone.
