+This tablet seems to provide decent rounded performance, and I haven't seen any issues with the responsiveness (I do not play games though).
+I do like the quality of the screen, as it has a good view angle as well as good color. I have noticed some light leakage, but it's minor.
+The front-facing stereo speakers are nice for watching videos.
+The battery seems to last me a good while, though I've done no direct objective testing.
+The build seems rather solid, and don't have any complaints about the feel of it in hand, although it seems a touch heavy.
+Plenty of onboard memory, with a Micro-SD slot that will take up to 128GB
-The camera is not very good at all, just sufficient.
-The wireless is 2.4GHz only, so if you have problems with interference there, you might want to steer clear.
-Some baked-in apps are annoying and pointless.
Side notes-
ASUS includes a program to detect battery draining apps, and this has been useful at times already, since it's found apps which are keeping the processor awake to gives the option to kill them. Some of the additional ASUS apps I had to disable, because they were just flat-out annoying me, though. Be prepared for UI elements and useless apps to just get shoved in your face whether you want to use them or not.
I did have an issue with an update failing, which actually bricked the device for some time. ASUS offered to take a return (at my expense), refusing to advise on how to perform a re-flash, which irks me as a technician. I summarily fixed it myself, and it wasn't easy to find out how, but it's working fine again.

Best Android Tablet Money Can Buy (as of 8/5/15)

From 2K display, 2GB of RAM, Intel Atom chip, expandable storage slot, to premium feel and look, what's not to like? It's even lighter than iPad Mini (all 3 models)! This Asus ZenPad is designed to compete directly with iPad Mini and boy, there is no competition! With half of the price, this Asus tablet can do no wrong. Unless you are deeply invested in the Apple's ecosystem, this is the best Android tablet money can buy thus far; hands down.
Everything from handing in the hand, to screen resolution, it is exactly like iPad Mini. I even tried to put it into a sleeve specifically designed for iPad Mini, it fits perfectly. Plus, it even uses USB Type C for data transfer and charging (though it only comes with Micro USB cable out of the box).
Using the tablet is a breeze. The only lag is due to Android's latest software, Lollipop. Otherwise, it is a great small tablet for anyone who is often on the go. I am enjoying mine....can't wait for the 4GB model to arrive in U.S. soon.

This is a great step-up from my several-years-old Kindle Fire HD. For the money, you cannot beat this Asus tablet. I bought it before the price was jacked up and before any of the reviews were in. For the price, I doubt you can find a tablet with all the features this tablet has. The only thing I found missing is the ability to output movies via a HDMI connection (like recent Samsung tablets). The tablet does support USB OTG and it works flawlessly; great for importing photos and music. I agree with other reviewers that the battery life is not great, but I usually use the tablet sitting next to a wall jack where I can plug it in. I would recommend an external battery pack just in case you are out and about and need a juice boost. Also, I have noticed that the screen periodically dims on its own (when not in auto setting) when playing certain games; not a major deterrent. I like the two stereo speakers on the front; sound quality is surprisingly good. I bought this over the Samsung Galaxy Tab A because even though the Samsung had a larger screen, the display resolution was only 1024 x 768, compared to the ASUS' resolution of 1536 x 2048. Also, the Samsung has only one speaker, and only 16 GB internal storage (compared to the ASUS with 32GB internal storage.) If you don't care about the HDMI and shorter battery life, grab this tablet; you won't be sorry.

I've been waiting quite some time to get into the tablet game, doing my research on any one that looked interesting to me from the Galaxy tab S to iPad to the Microsoft surface. However where the Asus Zenpad really stood out was it's price tag, 200$ for an 8 inch tablet with a 2k screen? Way more intriguing at that price than it's competitors. So I picked it up and have been on it non stop ever since.
Performance: The Intel atom runs android 5.1 like it's no problem. Very smooth animations, no hiccups on opening or switching applications like I've seen on some other tablets, As for playing games, it's taking everything I've thrown at it with great performance besides maybe an emulator. But that is to be expected from most devices.
Screen: The 2K display really shines with youtube videos and watching netflix on the Tablet. Asus has also included an app to change some of the color settings however i think it looks best and has better true to life colors on just the standard setting however some may prefer Vivid.
Sound: Now this is where the tablet surprised me, no fancy Dolby Atmos or giant front facing speakers, but it has amazing sound quality, tops my HTC one m9 and is even close to my laptop in terms of loudness and I must say exceeds in clarity and quality. Could not be happier.
Body: I was a little confused with the design at first having a small pleather strip along the left side but it is a good hold for grip. Tablet is very light weight and the buttons feel okay and corners are soft. Overall a good feel for reading, watching videos, or playing games.
Dislikes: There are some bad sides to this tablet. The charger that came with it has got to be the shortest charger I've ever seen, definitely picked up a longer charging piece a day later. The volume and power buttons are a bit on the mushy side and don't provide much feedback. However for the price tag these are very minimal issues
This is weird: So far I have one app issues and that is the pnc banking app just won't launch. not a huge issue with other options like mint. But is a bit of an inconvenience.
Overall I'd rate this tablet a near perfect buy. I love using it for just about everything, works great paired with a chromecast, and has so little short comings I'd say it's the best * inch android Tablet out right now even passing the Nexus 9.

I purchased this tablet as a gift for my wife, and there were certain criteria that needed to be met:
1. I wanted a brand that I could trust.
I have used ASUS products for years. My own tablet is an ASUS Transformer, and my son who runs an importer's IT department won't buy computer motherboards unless they're ASUS branded. I cannot remember a time when I had a problem with an ASUS product that wasn't my own fault.
2. It needed to be simple to use.
One of the things I like about every ASUS tablet I've seen is that they go out of their way to make them easy to use. This tablet is no exception. The interface is both clean and bright, and the included "ASUS" apps make the corresponding Google apps look like something done by kindergarten children over a weekend.
3. It needs to have the power and capability to handle whatever my wife throws at it.
Watch movies? Check.
Stream on-line Internet based TV programming? Check.
Run Skype, full resolution, without skipping and jerking? Check.
Switch to a web-browser to check the weather, and then pop-back-over to her TV program without skipping a beat? Check.
Is the screen easy to see and use, despite the relatively small size? Check.
Can you run over it with a Mack Truck without it being mooshed? Well, maybe not. . . :-)
It has a (relatively) fast processor. OK, it's no i7, but being an Atom based chipset gives it a lot of capabilities.
The screen is both big (for it's size), and bright. Despite the relatively small size, the screen is remarkably easy to see, and the touch-sensitivity is neither too light nor too heavy.
I guess the best review I can give it is this:
WAAAAAAAA!!! I WANT ONE TOO!!!!!
(laughing!)

Was a little put off at first when hearing the word "sluggish" used to describe the tablet in a few reviews. The people making those reviews are spoiled and seem to forget that this tablet costs 200-300 dollars less than the top end tablets. Great screen, great battery life, competent processor, decent gaming performance- Basically anything you could want in an 8 inch tablet. Definitely recommend purchasing this if you are on the fence like I was

The Asus Zenpad S 8.0 is a overall Good Tablet. It is a Great Tablet for the price paid when compared to Samsung and Apple's Tablets.
The Display is wonderful and the ppi is high for a tablet in this price range. Asus truly suggests with this Tablet that you can have a crystal clear screen for $200-$225. You can purchase this Asus Tablet instead of the starter Tab A from Samsung or other 1200x800 HD grainy low resolution screens for the same price now or less.
Hardware:
The specifications are good for a 2015 budget Tablet and comparable to competitors. The quad core processor is a plus. The 32 gb internal memory is much better than 16gb with the ability to expand to 128 gb with a external memory card.
The physical Tablet is well made for a $225 Tablet. It does not feel like a cheep plastic.
Battery Life was fine and standard and on par with 2015 Tablets. However, it does not compare to the iPad Mini's battery life or quick charging. This Tablet gets 6-8 hours battery with normal use. Charging is normal to slow in terms of speed.
Speed:
The Tablet is quick considering its price point. I haven't experienced any lag. It is suitable for Android 5.0.
Overall, for the price and up to the $350 price range, this is a great Tablet.

My boyfriend and I purchased this tablet for our son as a Christmas gift. He is 7 years old and loves to download games from the play store. Before the tablet, he would download them on my phone and take up all of my space. The tablet is a great size for a 7 year old to hold as well as play games on. It's not too big like a laptop where they can't walk around with it, but it's not too small where he can't really see what he's doing. He is absolutely in love with the Asus tablet and we feel that it was a great purchase because it has great graphic quality as well as 32GB of storage, but is also expandable up to 128GB. This is something our son will probably never be able to "fill up." The sound quality is great and it is user friendly. Our son was able to figure it out how to use it on Christmas day without assistance. The battery life is amazing too, we have been shocked as to how long it lasts. We are truly satisfied with this product.

I bought this thing on the spur of the moment and to be honest thought I would play with it and return it within the allowable period. I already have 3 or 4 tablets to play with in the household and every family member gets to use them. I refuse to pay apple premium for an iPad (though the kids have one each).
Well, this thing blew me away with it's super thin design and perfect screen size for reading.
It has a high resolution screen, super comfortable to hold in either hand and is made out of quality material. It also has expandable storage and I have 64gb in mine for movies etc. Micro sd cards cost almost nothing these days so get the biggest you can afford.
I give the unit 4 stars because it occasionally stutters when scrolling and the white is a little washed out imo. Shame BB won't allow me to give it 4.5 because it is really that good.
Otherwise for the money --- an absolute delight to hold in your hands.

Screen quality is excellent, colors pop and the backlight is uniform with no bleed. Nice to see Asus didn't charge the standard premium for the 32GB of storage (you'll have around 25GB free space out of the box). Build quality is excellent with nice styling, feels very solid in hand. When tweaked with the pre-installed Audio Wizard app, the front speakers produce an acceptable level of sound and depth, but don't expect to get your ears blown off. Processor seems decent enough - as with all android tablets, the more apps you install the more you should make use of an auto-start manager and RAM cleaner app to keep your performance smooth. I'm not really a tablet gamer, but it's handled the few games I've tried out without issue. Battery life seems to top out around 7 hours of use depending on screen brightness, the apps you're running, etc. People seem to want paper-thin tablets with 24 hour battery life, and you can't really have both. Personally I'd have rather it had been a little thicker and a couple ounces heavier with a larger battery so I could get a few more hours of use before charging. Can't really beat it for the price, though.

Tablet is fast and responsive. Wish it had 3GB of RAM sometimes but it rarely slows down. It has tons of space built in and an SD card slot to fit even more. Would also like to see palm rejection in a future build though for drawing and stylus usage. This tablet is primarily used for media consumption and it does all that well, especially the built in speakers.

I feel like I got my money's worth, but it's not perfect. Once you are in an app (game, website, whatever) you're fine - but there is significant lag switching between apps. There's even more lag when waking from a long sleep.
That being said, that's really the only issue I have. If you have patience, and/or if you spend a lot of time in an app before you switch, I think this tablet will be fine.
I use it mainly for listening to podcasts, music, streaming media (Netflix, YouTube, etc.), Amazon Kindle and casual games.
The size is perfect, the speakers (front facing!) are really good, you can use an SD card for storage (music & photos). The battery is "Meh", but I'm usually near a plug so it hasn't been a big issue for me.
I haven't tried the camera, so I can't report on that.

Great tablet with a great screen. It's the same size and resolution as the iPad mini with retina display but I get to keep all my Android apps and I don't have to learn how to use ios. I get about 6-8 hours of usage on a charge and the speakers are pretty descent and even face me instead of being on back or sides.

My first non Samsung tablet. Some what like a Apple mini with android.
A little trickier then my other tablets but works well, and is actually faster and smoother. What propelled me to get this was the 32 gigs and have had good luck with Asus definitely worth the money and your getting much more storage then the other tablets at a great price. Also the screen is more then sufficient to look at. Not really that fussy in that aspect as most tablets are more then enough.

This tablet is lightweight, has an AMAZING screen, a processor that rolls with the best of em, and the speakers are fantastic. I only have two tiffs about it... 1) No HDMI output (Chromecast solves that I guess) 2) Very awkward leather:metal ratio (metal scratches easily) on rear only assists with one angle holding, and not too many cases on market for it yet to hide this "problem"(more a preference). If it wasn't for thatose two things I'd give it 5 starts all day!

Very light and thin, screen is easily best part of this tablet.
Relatively fast, plays videos and casual games without stutters.
Couple of drawbacks are battery life is a bit wanting averaging around 5.5 hours of use per charge, and the Asus bloat ware is quite redundant with all their apps available from Google, no need for most of it and difficult if not impossible to remove without rooting.
For $200 it's a pretty solid value without spending $400 for a 4:3 tablet from Apple or Samsung.

Great screen and performance for the price. Smooth and bright experience. I would've given 5 stars, but I personally don't like the custom apps and other "bloatware". It's easy enough to ignore, so this is really minor in the big picture. Also, there is no Marshmallow (Android 6) support yet -- hopefully on the way.

The ZenPad is light and fast. It has a beautiful screen and the tablet is easy to hold. With an active stylus I would have given it five stars. I needed a replacement for my NOOK HD and would have paid the extra for the more powerful one if Best Buy had it.
