    Great for apartments

I chose this one out of the many locks because you aren't changing the entire deadbolt. Being in an apartment limits me on smart locks because the apartment complex wouldn't allow me to change the locks without approval from their board. This fits over the existing deadbolt. My favorite feature is the auto unlock feature that senses my phone within 10 feet of the door. Helps when you have your hands full and can't get to your keys easily. Only downside to these locks is that they don't have the wifi access point integrated into the lock itself. Instead you have to pay an extra $80 to be able to lock your door away from home. Aside from the price, you have to have this plugged into an outlet close to the lock and still within range. It's a bit of an eyesore, but you get used to it after a week. Overall I will still give the lock a 5 star because it is a great product, just not perfect like we need everything to be.

I purchased this bc my toddler is now tall enough and smart enough to open the front door on her own. This product is simple enough in it’s design to fit over the lock, and its too big for tiny hands to grasp.

So the stars I gave it are misleading. When it works its great and would be 4 or 5 stars. I have multiple of these and one was giving me problems. It would lose connection for no reason, which would be remedied by taking out one of the batteries to reset it. Not the perfect behavior for a product that can lock you out of you house. With that said, I think the issue was resolved with a software update since it hasn't happened in a long time. The fact that it happened at all is why I lowered the rating. When paired with home kit it is a Great home accessory.

I read about and studied smart locks for several weeks before buying August. It was a piece of cake to install and works great with Apple HomeKit via my Apple TV. Love how the door unlocks as I approach it. Not having to dig in my pocket for my house key is great. When I leave the house my Apple Watch makes it easy to lock the door.

    Good automated lock

Installation is easy. It replaces the interior portion of your lock, so the exterior half and guts remains in place. HomeKit, Wink Hub, and Alexa setup are easy. If you have an Apple TV, then August Connect is not necessary for remote access, even for the August app. Same is true if you have an August Doorbell. The HomeKit app works well whether home or away, and uses the Apple TV for remote access, which also allows you to use Siri while away. The auto-unlock based on GPS/Bluetooth works great for coming back from places that are away from home, but if you go outside, yet remain close, like when doing yard work, then the lock will not automatically open when you approach. I recommend the August Keypad for that, but that's also an additional $70. The auto-lock is a little disappointing. I thought it was Bluetooth-based and thus would activate when walking away, but it's not. It's only timer-based. But you can set up an automation via HomeKit or Wink that will lock it once you get a certain distance away. The keypad allows for one-touch locking on your way out, which for me provides the most peace of mind. The app has connectivity issues on occasion. At times, I can be less than 10 feet away and the app will not connect right away, which can prevent me from changing certain settings; but most of the time it works well and is nicely designed. I would give it 5 stars if the app had more consistent connectivity and if the auto-lock/unlock was reliable enough to not need the additional keypad. Overall it's a good product though.

This lock installed easily and makes it nice living alone to monitor my home. You can set the alerts up to do this and it works very well with Apple HomeKit. Change the batteries about every 2 months depending on usage and make sure the Bridge is decently close to the door for remote access. I would buy this again.

I always wanted this lock. It is beautifully designed, easy to install, and works perfectly. Price drop for the holidays pushed me over and I am glad I did it. Best part is the AppleTV can control this lock when you are not even home.

I've gone back and forth on ordering the August lock because the glut of online reviews for the previous version are either scathing at 1-star or over the top praising at 5-stars. I pulled the trigger because my condo association requires we have a common set of keyed locks, so I needed to retain my existing deadbolt while attempting to modernize the home. Overall I've been very pleased with the unit. INSTALLATION The installation was very easy. It really does only take about 15 minutes as the instructions suggest. My biggest complaint is that once you open the packaging, start the install, and get about half way through do you find out that certain deadbolts are not compatible. Luckily mine was compatible...but I also happened to supposedly have the only model the required longer specialty screws (#14-28) that you apparently can only get from a locksmith. The instructions say to contact August and they responded within 2-3 hours and shipped me a set. But still...what is the incremental cost of 2 screws and why not just include them in the packaging for convenience? Compared to my thermostat/fire alarms that have hardware for multiple installation scenarios, the cheap LED lights have hardware for different types of recessed can lights, and my switches came with all color option in a single package. I think August could be financially OK if they threw a bone to the consumer and made install convenient for all. OPERATION Personally I think the operation works pretty great. It's not flawless by any means, but pretty good. When you lock & unlock in manual mode, the response time is quick (1-2 seconds) and seamless. I also use the geo-locating feature to auto-unlock when I approach. This one is a bit hit or miss. It usually works with more of a 5-10 second lag as I approach the door. If I have the wifi turned off on my phone, it tends not to accurately pick up my location correctly to unlock the door. This area could use improvement, but it's not the reason I bought the lock. Auto-Lock feature. August offers the capability of this. I haven't done this yet because I'm afraid I'll walk out the door without my phone or keys one day and be screwed. I'm waiting on the doorbell to arrive so I can install that and the keypad. Then I'll set the auto-unlock feature to on probably. I've also read numerous reviews about people's locks re-calibrating constantly or showing it was locked but being unlocked. I have not experienced any of these. I will say, my door is skewed and, prior to installing August, the deadbolt had interference with the strike plate. I relocated the strike plate so there was no interference and the door would open and close without having to push against it to operate the lock. I imagine if there was interference the lock would want to recalibrate. OPERATING DISTANCE I've read a number of reviews on the lock not responding when the phone is two inches from the door. My phone connects to August virtually anywhere in our condo without having to utilize the August Connect. I live in a 2-story 1,700 sf condo so at any point I'm not more than 40-50 linear feet straight line from the lock. I was actually pretty impressed by that. INTER-CONNECTIVITY So far I only have the August lock integrated with Nest. When you lock the door from your phone, the app asks if you want to set the Nest to away. It's kind of cool, perhaps a bit redundant because I think Nest sets itself to away if you're not around. But if you manually lock the door, August won't ask to set Nest to away, which is nice because you probably locked it from the inside. Now if I leave through the front door, come back in through the back door, and geo-locate doesn't auto-unlock the door...Nest is stuck on Away and doesn't override the August automatically. I just pushed the nest and then it resent to Home status. The lock seems to work well with the August connect as well. I have the connect in an outlet about 6 feet from the door. I think the connect device just sits dormant until you use the app and tell it to Remote Connect for lock status. Next Step is to try and figure out if I can get August to tell Nest that I'm home...so Nest can tell Alexa I'm home so she can drop my entrance theme song and she informs Smart Things to give me a good light show as I open the door...one day... THE UPSHOT Overall, I have been pleasantly surprised by lock. Probably because I read so many disproportionate negative reviews on the old version. I decided to take a gamble and happy I did. My biggest annoyance was that they didn't include the elongated screws for the "in-case you need them" scenario. Operation has been great so far, I plan to utilize the keypad to give access to cleaning crew, etc. I'll update this as I have any new info or issues to highlight.

The lock works, but it did take some time for the auto unlock feature to start working for me. It worked from day one for my wife. We have the same phone so I have no idea why it took so long for me. You do have to buy the additional devices to get full functionality. The wifi adapter works for remote unlock, and the keypad is great for temp codes and for older family members who do not use smart phones.

I’m in the process of making my home a “smart home” and no smart home is complete without a smart lock. Though I initially bought a quickset smart lock, I had all kinds of issues setting it up and returned it... and I’m glad I did. The August smart lock is much more user friendly and looks great! For the most part it works well integrated into the rest of my smart products including google home. However, using it through Google Home tends to get annoying when August comes on to ask unneeded questions. I have mine set to lock and unlock my door as I come and go which has been convenient. Occasionally, though, it will not recognize me returning and I will have to use the app to unlock the door… A minor inconvenience. Overall this is an excellent lock and, once they get the bugs worked out in the software, this will probably be one of my favorite smart home purchases.

I purchased this lock after reading all online reviews. May reviewers claimed this is the best in the market. I was more interested in its integration with Stringify and IFTTT and also the autounlock functionality. Here are the Pros and Cons: Pros: Easy and quick installation, looks nice even though a little bulky. Cons: - The autounlock, is basically only a feature that is there, but you can never use it. It just doesn't work. Even though I followed all the instructions and troubleshooting but still it just so slow that you can get the key and unlock the door way sooner than the autounlock function starts working. This was true on my Google Pixel XL and my wife's iPhone 7. - Slow connection: For almost $300 lock plus August connect, you expect it to work smoothly and without significant delay. Every time I open my app to connect to the luck it just takes a long time. This is true for Wifi or Bluetooth connection. It connects a little faster on the iPhone 7 but too slow on Google Pixel XL. I found myself repeatedly closing the app and reopening it in order for it to connect. - No Unlock action on IFTTT or Stringify: This is most probably for security reason so that you cannot unlock the door via anything else except the August application. It could be a Pro, but because the auto unlock feature of the august application is doesn't work, I was hoping to use those applications to create an autounlock function. So no luck there either. - Price: This is a very pricy smart lock and even though it is bulky, you still need to purchase the August Connect separately and pay extra for it. One would expect that they should incorporate the August Connect within the lock itself. So, this lock is now going back to best buy. I guess I need to wait a while before I can get a reliable smart lock that really works.

I like the easy setup. 5 minutes tops to put this on. Connection to app was easy. The only complaint I have is with the app itself. It doesn’t have a lock out feature. Meaning there should be a lock out/privacy button to prevent the people with “always” access from entering. It’s a little awkward when someone walks in and you’re sitting in the living room with nothing but boxers on.

I thought this was a Version 3, but was only a Version 2 so therefore is missing some features I expected. This fact is not noted on the box. The feature I am missing the most is indication that the unit is locked (this is a separate device that you attach to the doorframe or drill/embed in the doorframe). I will live with this for now. This was otherwise easy to install and program.

I am really happy with my August Smart Lock. It was VERY easy to install and set up with my phone. It's also easy to add guests to the service. My main issue is with Apple's Home Kit. I'm not sure what's up, but there is a MAJOR lag if you use the Home KIt app to lock or unlock the door. Siri takes locking and unlocking instructions very well though. However, the most reliable way to lock and unlock the door is with the August app itself. Maybe this is an Apple issue -- I haven't yet figured it out. Therefore, I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5. Perhaps it would perform better with the WiFi bridge, but I haven't yet decided to spend the money on that.

Excellent Door Lock for Connected Home

I researched several bluetooth and wifi door locks before selecting the August lock. Install was easy and took less than 5 minutes. I created an account and it connected easily. I was able to create accounts for everyone in my home and get notifications anytime they use the lock from their phone. I have also been able to send digital keys to other family members and friends and control when and if they are able to access my home. The lock is not intrusive and can still easily be opened by hand from the inside or by key from the outside. When I leave I do not need to dig out my keys and can just tell Siri to "lock the door" from my phone or my apple watch. I have it set to unlock automatically as I approach. It also has a setting to lock automatically after a set time up to 5 minutes. I like that this prevents me from forgetting to lock the door. The only room for improvement I can see is that if I go outside but do not leave my yard or garage the lock will not recognize my return and therefor not open if it has auto-locked. I can still easily ask siri to open the door, or load the app. I have timed it and asking siri is slightly faster than digging my keys out of my pocket or bag. If you're interested in a smart lock, purchase the August, you will not regret it.

Good: easy to install works good as long as your door has a smooth latch. Free keys and seems like good security method. Good notifications better with connect. Bad: need keypad and connect to make it worth while. Geo fencing needs help essentially with android phones. Don’t know state of door open or closed so you end up not using auto lock.(this can be remedied by stepping up to the pro or oval lock but that steps up the price) and the biggest con is your wife will hate how it looks on the door(it’s big)

initially when it was released with home kit support, it wasn't integrated in the ios10 home app. only after I dug through august's website did I find out that a firmware update would bring that functionality. its cool to use Siri to unlock and lock the door but homekit compatibility was what I was looking for. UPDATE: the software/ firmware update is out and it was easy to update. it is now integrated with the home app and works the way its supposed to. installation of the lock itself took less than 10 minutes. just make sure you use masking tape thats included on the key lock side to hold everything in place while you install the august lock on the inside. setup was painless. I use it with homekit iOS 10 and Apple TV 4th gen as a hub for homekit. when you do this you do not need the august connect, UNLESS your Apple TV is outside bluetooth range from the august lock. I might integrate the doorbell if that supports homekit.
