If you liked the late Rodney Dangerfield, you will love this 1986 film. No doubt Rodney had a hand in the screenplay. There is so much of his schtick here, but he makes it work. Basically he decides to go to college with his son to dissuade the son from dropping out. He plays his Rodney persona, here named Thornton Melon, a tall and fat clothing tycoon. The characters tend to be stererotypical and sometimes caricature, but done deliberately to make you like or hate them as Rodney wishes. But it has some laugh filled sequences and good special effects, as Thornton performs his very difficult Triple Lindy dive. Good supporting cast includes Sally Kellerman, Ned Beatty and a young Robert Downey, Jr. Remove a star if you are not a Dangerfield fan. But if you are, this is fun and good escapist entertainment.

    Back to School on Blu-ray

If you are a fan of Rodney Dangerfield, and how could you not be...then you should definitely add "Back To School" to your Blu-ray collection. MGM presents the movie in a faithful-to-source 1.85:1 aspect ratio transfer, which has tiny black bars on the top and bottom if you're watching the movie without any overscan. This is normal, and this is how it should look. There's no digital tinkering, such as digital noise reduction and edge enhancement, done to the movie. It is easily the best that the movie has looked on home video. The sound has been remixed in 5.1 surround sound, but if you listened to it, you'd probably never notice. It's okay at best, but perhaps, MGM should've stuck with the original mix. Spanish and French audio options are also included. The extras from the 2007 DVD release have also been ported over. The movie itself is hilarious and very enjoyable, and definitely worth the purchase. Recommended to anyone who enjoys a great comedy.

Great comedy. Great ending if you absolutely love to see the "Triple Lindy." This film has Dangerfield, Oingo Boingo, young wild Robert Downey Jr, Sam Kinison, Burt Young, and others rounding out a great cast. Enjoyable features. Some of the blu ray transfer is not great, but I didnt mind given the movie came out in 1986.

Always good to go Back to School

Realizing he's not getting the respect he deserves from his son, billionaire Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield) goes Back to School to complete the college education he never got. Soon Thornton is the big man on campus, throwing the biggest parties but not being serious about his studies. He realizes that he has further distanced himself from his son and needs to show him the true way to succeed - with hard work and demonstrated skills.

"Back to School" Isn't Quite Back

I'm very disappointed in this release. MGM, having financial troubles, seems to have just taken the DVD version of this movie and transferred it to Blu-ray without any care or quality control. Don't get me wrong, this movie is one of my all time favorites but I watched this release on my 32" HDTV and the picture quality is the worst I have ever seen. The first 20 minutes of the movie are the worst with fuzzy or blurred imagery but it doesn't slightly improve after the initial scenes with the movie's set-up, prior to Rodney Dangerfield appearing at his son's college. There are special features that have been ported over from the DVD release but MGM needs to start getting its act together if they expect to survive in the home video market.
