A game that surpasses the original
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is not without its glitches, and it certainly demands a lot of the player - it doesn't explain too much. The game stutters on it's frame rate a little too much, and conversations can abruptly halt mid-sentence, additionally, the grappling hook targeting still seems a touch inconsistent in as much as you would expect it to be usable in some situations and it is not. The game does put you in the role of the world's greatest detective. And it does this not through the detective mode (which of course is still key, but more from a strategic standpoint of taking out multiple dangerous enemies) but instead by presenting you with puzzling challenges that require you to deduce the correct tool in your arsenal to solve. Which may be remembering you can crouch! The riddler challenges are particularly brutal in this game. They get much harder than arkham asylum. From variations of Simon Say's, to having to destroy 4 targets spread across a wide area simultaneously, they will keep your brain ticking over as you move around the city. And there are a LOT of them. Though there's a good smattering of "shoot this with a grappling gun" to get. And this gets to the core of what makes this game so very good. You could, if you wish, just follow the story missions and finish the game fairly quickly. I am sure you could complete the game in about 10 hours if you really wanted to avoid anything but core story missions... However, in the mold of Assassin's creed Brotherhood, the game encourages you not to do this. MAJOR characters appear in the side stories - and include content you just don't want to skip. There is the occasional mini-mission much like Assassin's creed which require you to save a political prisoner from some two-face thug. You might not feel like being watched as you play, so those pesky cameras might be fun to hunt down and destroy. There are Alternate Reality training missions that lead directly to upgrades if you figure them out. And you can find all of this by happily hooking your way through the city looking for riddler clues, or just hapless thugs in need of a good beat down (you don't need a reason, you're batman) Why would you do all this? Because it levels you up of course. If you are a real fan of the combat system from Arkham Asylum, you will be glad to know it comes back with some enhancements. Not only does it try and train you throughout how to properly time critical hits, I found it a little more forgiving for the counter ability - meaning that if two guys are going after you at the same time, you can actually avoid both. The moves are even more extreme than before and the visceral hand-to-hand combat system is even more visceral (I just wanted to use the word visceral) as Batman can, with an experienced handler, comfortably take out 15-20 thugs without a single blow landing on him. "Where does he get those toys?" - unfortunately, he doesn't actually let you ask him, but Batman comes equipped with EVEN more on his utility belt than before - starting you off with a remote controlled batarang even! (that thing is some fun! it has BRAKES!) On top of all of this, is a great story. I won't spoil anything here, but catwoman is a welcome addition, and you will have some unusual alliances. In short, this IS the best game of the year so far. It will have some competition in the form of Uncharted 3, Skyrim and Assassin's Creed's latest offering - but I would be surprised if any of those games manage to surpass Batman: Arkham City. On value alone, if you do everything, you will find yourself getting through about 1% of the game every couple of hours and that doesn't include the Riddler's challenges which are outside the game, or getting to play as Catwoman (if you have that option available to you)

Excellent game for anyone, a must buy.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is an excellent game, especially if you are a Batman fan. This game oozes Batman's rich comic book history. It has vastly improved gameplay that is smooth and rich in bone crushing sequences. It combines a series of new combos and finishes, along with more gadgets. The gadgets are increased in number and are essential to many story and Riddler challenges you face. Oh, and the Riddler challenges are much better. He becomes a real villian in this one with every challenge. There are a variety of side missions and challenges that will take much of your time. Even after you finish the main story you will have plenty to do afterward. Many of Gotham's super criminals are present, which at times felt a little underdeveloped. One would question why their inclusion, but afterall, it is Arkham city, so where else would they be, right? The story is great to play through with a variety of missions, boss battles, and sets. There could have been a better focus on improving most of the boss battles, which have familiar flaws. However, they were slightly tweekced to make for a better experience. There are occasional slow downs in the game after played for over two houirs, but the game runs smoothly for the most part. All in all, these are small gripes in what is an amazing game. You feel like Batman with the detective work you are required to do, crowds of foes you are able to defeat, and the increased array of gadgets do make you become Batman. With one of the most impressive opens you will encounter, along with a surprising conclusion, this is no doubt a must buy for any Batman fan and great purchase for all other gamers. A nice counter balance from all the FPS out there. A truly fun experience with a great musical score to completely immerse you under the cowl.

Pretty Good Continuation and Overall Nice Game
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this during the Thanks-Giving Sale of 2011. I was waiting to get UC-3 and Skyrim as well but my luck ran out. I was glad I got Batman at least or else my holidays would have been a bummer. There are some good improvements over Arkham Asylum, but they retained many of the same features. The graphics has improved and the overall game play is also quite good. The story line is good and the side missions are well laid out. I just finished the main story line and have to replay to finish the other side quests. Unlike in Arkham Asylum where we could play as the Joker, there there are many more characters to play as - each with their unique gadgets and skills. This significantly improves the replay value of the game. This time around they added specific levels/quests for CatWoman and also other playable characters as well. Am going to get NightWing and see how things span out. Some of the riddler's puzzles add an interesting touch as well. The puzzles are quite easy and not too difficult to solve- you just need the right gadgets and also many times some out of the box thinking. So if you are contemplating buying this and are reading my review - I say its well worth your money.

City > Asylum
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Arkham Asylum put together various different styles of gameplay that allowed players to have a freeflowing fight, level up, and solve puzzles the entire game. Arkham City does that, but with more abilities, tricks, and free roaming around a massive city. Reminded me of GTA free roaming with mini objectives and side missions. There is a new side mission called AR Training that makes you practice your abilities and take them to a whole new level. It unlocks more gadgets for you to use. Graphics, story, gameplay - amazing. If you loved Arkham Asylum, you will LOVE Arkham City.

Best Hero game yet
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Anyone who played Arkham Asylum needs to get this. Expanded world, great story, Mark Hamil's last as the Joker, more gadgets...unending list of reasons. Don't rent, you will play again, and there are some 40 hrs main story and side missions, never mind the challenges. Get it new, Catwoman is worth it (slide with her once...). Hints towards a third; freeflow fighting rocks, but the Bat is still a ninja, first and foremost. Get this now, don't wait for X-Mas!!!

BEST GAME EVER!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of the best games that I have ever played. The storyline is pure epicness. It keeps you on the ege of your seat with all of the twists and turns, including the ending which is sure to be a shock to any fan of Batman. The gameplay is flawless, including the perfected combat and gadget systems. The difficulty is just right, staying true to the one you choose. The graphics while playing are great, but the game really shines with its cutscenes. One of the highlights of the game to me is the audio. The score is great! It really sets the tone of the area or level you are in. The voice acting is spot on. With the classic animated series actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill voicing Batman and the Joker respectively, it really gives the game a sense of nostalgia. Even the actors voicing the lesser known characters make them feel right out of the comics. The game is awesome and is definetly a must buy.

Best Game...ever
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So, full disclosure - I'm a long time Batman fan, mostly from the comic books; so, I'm Batman-biased. While, I often have trouble with the liberties movie makers have taken with the franchise, I love what they have done with the video games. With Arkham City, they have hit the ball out of the park again. They have stayed true to what I remember about the comics with regards to the characters and have developed an Intriguing storyline. I love the modern, gritty look that they give the characters. Voice work is fantastic. The graphics are amazing - I love just spending time jumping and gliding around the city to check out the views. The ability to pick and choose what challenges (or parts of the main storyline) you want to work on and when is awesome. Love the extra add-on content already. The game lends itself to endless replay. I can't wait to start over on New Game+ mode. Only one problem I have had with the game is occasionally when the camera view changes suddenly when performing a complicated move. The move fails and I have to try again (or get hammered in combat). With Arkham Asylum, I was able to complete the main story and leave all the Riddler trophies to find with my young son, free of having to battle villians. With Arkham City, prisoners are still abound even after the main story, so the violence and language prevents me from sharing that experience with him this time around.

Fun, Gritty, Dark, Challenging Game
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Arkham City is great, even better than Arkham Asylum, which I loved. There's more cussing and dark content in this game than the previous one, so parents be mindful of younger kids playing it. That said; I loved it and am thankful that it was dark. It's more inline with the Batman Begins, Dark Knight, and Dark Knight Rises movies. That's how I picture Batman. The Riddler trophies/riddles are much tougher to solve (and there's a TON more of them) than Arkham Asylum. I really enjoy trying to get all of these. I've actually beaten the game and am going around the city to handle the Riddler side-mission.

My Game of the Year
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As good a console game as it gets. Compelling storyline, incredible graphics, immersive sandbox environment, amazingly fun gameplay, and tons of content for repeatedly play-throughs, Batman: Arkham City has it all. Even if you're a Marvel fan, or a non fan of comic books, if you have any interest in sandbox games like Grand Theft Auto or Assassin's Creed, this game will be right up your alley. If you like beat em up, button masher type games, this game will appeal to you. If you buy this game brand new, it comes with Catwoman and Robin content as well, so you get to play as these characters too! Just an overall great package and definite game of the year contender. 5 Stars!

Arkham Has Moved
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In 2009, Batman: Arkham Asylum was released. The game had amazing graphics and players were able to experience dynamic free flow combat, become the World's Greatest Detective, explore Arkham Asylum, take down hoards of enemies, become the Invisible Predator, and do everything the Dark Knight could do. Now, on October 18, 2011, Arkham Asylum will move and become... Arkham City! Batman is back with more combat moves, more enemies, more gadgets, and even harder Riddler challenges. Batman is even greater in this game and will need to unleash all of his techniques to save Gotham. Play as Catwoman and Talia' Al' Ghul as well! "Everything At Stake - Everyone At Risk" "No Escape"

A game that deserves more than 5 stars
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is the best thing I have played in a long time. I know it sounds cheesy to give a game all 5 stars but if there ever was a game that deserved it, it would be this one. It had one storyline that twisted over and over. I don't want to give anything away but the climax made me think about the choices that Batman makes. The gameplay is great. If you played Arkham Assylum, you would know how it feels to jump around and beat the bad guys. However, this game blows the other control scheme out of the water. All of your gadgets are now hot-keyed so you can use them in combat. This adds a layer of creativity and addiction to the fights. Every detail in the city is presented well. Character models are great and the buildings look like they have been there for a long time. Even things that you don't care about, like a cardboard box with a shipping address stamped onto it, is revealed. No detail is spared in this game. The sound is fantastic from any character, whether they are major or minor characters. The ability to play New Game Plus, a mode where you start the game with all your gadgets and experience points but with a harder difficulty, adds replayability along with challenge maps to test your skills around the world. Overall, this game redefines action and adventure and makes me realize why I play games, to have fun.

Must Have Game!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Batman: Arkham City is a fantastic game. It might not be a good idea for the really young ones as it there is graphic violence (but no killing :) and adult language. This game is much better than Arkham Asylum which was still a great game. They packed it with more content, Batman mythology, and gamer love. Even if you aren't a Batman afficcionado but action, great graphics, and smooth fighting style - get this game!

Great Game and long playtime for an action game
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I think this has a great shot at game of the year. 25 hours of game play with the main storyline and another 5-6 hours to finish all the side quests and exploring. Great storyline and voice acting. I am normally not one to do all the side quests, but with this game I could not help wanting to explore everything and work to 100% completion. Replay value is very high. I'm very pleased with this game, I felt like I was Batman!!!
