The beats pill is the best Bluetooth speaker I’ve ever used, I like that it’s built into the iOS ecosystem, so If you’re already in, this is definitely for you. But if you have android products, don’t fray because you can still use it. I also love the fact that is has find my built in it so if you were to ever lose it, you can track it l.

The original Beats Pill speaker was introduced in 2012, then rereleased as a subsidiary under Apple, in 2015. Now, Beats has released a totally new and improved Beats Pill for 2024 and this version proves good things do come in small packages. The Pill comes in at a mere 2.8" tall, 2.8" deep and 8.9" wide, yet it puts out sound belying is diminutive size. It weighs a mere 1.5 pounds and comes with a removable lanyard to help you hold onto it while moving about. It's very attractive in its pill form and the color I got is Champagne, which is a really great color for a speaker. It's made of high quality plastics and the grill is metal. There's really not a lot protection if you drop this puppy, but I'm not a dropper, so not much of a concern. It's packaged like you'd expect a product from Apple to be. You pull a tab on the side of the box, slide it out and it's all safely nestled in there, with a USB C to USB C cable and three little pieces of paper (the usual regulatory pages, how to get Apple Music and a piece of paper showing what the buttons control and QR code you can scan to download a user guide. If you're an iPhone user, connecting it can't be simpler. It's iOS based, so just turn it on and it's immediately recognized by your iPhone and all you do is tap it to connect it. If you are invested in the Apple Ecosystem, it will already be available on all of your Apple devices, like iPad and Mac computer. If you're Android, you pair it by holding the power button until you see a blinking light and then find it in Bluetooth settings just like any Bluetooth device. For Android, there is an app. For iOS, you can use the same controls, but they are built into iOS automatically. Physical controls on the Pill itself are simple enough. Power button on the left. The center button is for answering and ending phone calls (yep, there's a pinhole microphone to facilitate calls) and on the right hand side, volume down/volume up. That's it and honestly all you could need. Inside the pill are two speakers, one a reengineered racetrack woofer with a stronger neodymium magnet driver for bass, which drives more air for deeper bass and a tweeter in its own housing for treble, which is actually really good at its job. This is a mono-speaker, but if you want stereo, you can add a second pill for that. The speakers are angled for better sound dispersion and room filling sound. It does quite well filling my family room. The Pill once charged offers up to 24 hours of non-stop play, which is pretty awesome. And it offers reverse charging, which means using the USB port on the back of the Pill, you can plug, for example, your cell phone in and it will charge from the Pill directly. In terms of water resistance, the Pill is IP67. While not totally waterproof, that's a very high water resistance rating, so it can stand being rained on and an IP67 rating suggests a device can be submerged in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes, but honestly, I wouldn't even consider trying this. Just being highly dust and water resistant means not having to worry about being outdoors. In terms of Codec, the Pill is AAC and SBC, which is all you really need. But Beats engineered the Pill to be able to play Lossless music by connecting your cell phone directly to the Pill. The Pill is Bluetooth 5.3 (the absolute latest BT Version is 5.4). I walked more than 100 feet from my iPhone and the speaker never lost its connection, which is terrific. I made some phone calls as well and it worked really well. When I told callers, I was using a Bluetooth speaker for the call, they said they couldn't tell I wasn't speaking through my iPhone. This would be great for conference calls. I've spent a few hours listening to the Pill. How something so small can sound so big is a mystery. No, this isn't a high end knock your socks off with rumbling deep bass speaker. The laws of physics can only go so far. But for its size, it sounds really good. Bass is nicely controlled. Complex music isn't muddled and voices sound natural and smooth. The tweeter puts out crisp highs, which aren't harsh. And I listened to so many different genres of music and nothing stumped it. Classical, Rock, Jazz, Country, New Age - all sounded really good. Much better than the price of admission would suggest, to be honest. It's a Beats Speaker, with Apple's magic thrown in. It's affordable, great looking, sounds great and is beyond simple to use, with super long battery life. Honestly, what more could you want?

I was fond of the original Pill design, but I have never owned one. I was pleased with the Champagne color and form factor. It is big and heavy for a mini speaker, but still totally portable. It fits in a backpack’s side pocket or from a handle by the removable wrist strap. I would’ve liked for the lanyard to be repositioned sideways for ease of carrying. The rubber backing provides good grip and added protection. The front metal grill gives it a very premium look and feel, as well as protection, but I do worry about dinging it. The speaker is IP67 water and dust resistant, which is great outdoors, but I admit I worry about the exposed USB-C port which may need to be cleaned from time to time. The speaker is both Android app and native iOS compatible, so pairing was easy. I have not experienced any hiccups or disconnections. It can also be connected via USB-C for higher quality sound. The battery is great, Beats claims 24 hours, and since it’s been a few days I believe it. The ability to use this speaker as a power bank is super convenient but it may lessen the battery life. I really like that I can pick up calls with the Pill. The microphone picks up voices clearly at around 6ft or closer with no issues. It may not look serious in a conference room, but I am sure it would work great. But how does it sound? I own several mini speakers and in my opinion the Pill has hands down the best clarity. While the bass is not the deepest or most thumping, it has considerable impact and precision. In most music genres, I noticed the midrange pushed forward a bit, making vocals come through as well as rhythm instruments and chorus. The treble is a bit acute in some tracks but wasn’t too fatiguing. Overall, the sound is enjoyable at 60-70% volume or below. However, there was distortion, sibilance, and harshness at higher volumes. I would say the sound is best in small-medium rooms or settings, or as background audio. If plugged via USB-C to a phone, tablet, or PC, you can experience lossless audio with even more clarity and definition. The bass becomes tighter, which may disappoint bass-heads who may be looking for that subwoofer feel. The speaker can be synced with another Pill to create a multi-source or multi-room effect to cover every angle, or as a stereo system with left-right channels. I only have one so I can only appreciate the option. The companion app is basic, and I am a bit disappointed that there is no EQ or sound presets. Hopefully there will be an update in the future with more features. In the end, the sound is decent and does the job, but the combined features make the Pill a great value.

This was a great purchase, am listening to it as I type this. In good condition when I bought it open box. Staff were exceptionally helpful.

Included- The Beats Pill wireless speaker, USB-C cable, removable lanyard. This is my first Beats product. At first glance, the Beats pill is sleek and stylish. I have the champagne color and it's very attractive. The size is great for portability. It's about 3"x3"x8" and only weighs 1.5 pounds. It is great to use indoors or outdoors because it's dust and water resistant with an IP67 rating. Pairing the device was a breeze. It only took me a moment. Press the power button to turn it on. The little light next to the power button will flash. Find the Pill in the list of your Bluetooth devices and select. On a full charge the Pill will play up to 24 hours. To play music, press the center button once. It will also skip tracks, play previous tracks and even answer phone calls. What's even great and unexpected is that it has the ability to charge your other devices. Just plug the USB-C cable into the Beats pill and into the other device. It will also work in reverse if you push the power button 3 times and then the device will charge your Pill. I also appreciate the fact that you can use the "Find My" function and locate your speaker. Once it's been paired it shows up in the "My Device" list. I think its functionality is very simple and straightforward which means it's easy to use. There's no customization with controls or audio levels. I think the sound quality is very good as is. I am all about the bass and the more the better. I do wish that could be amped up even more if I wanted but that's just me. It's still very enjoyable to use and listen to. If you want even more amplified sound, you can sync a second Pill to experience in Amplify mode or Stereo mode. I like that The Beats Pill is affordable and stylish, the sound is good and it's very easy to use. I am very happy with my first Beats Pill.

Loud and battery last a while but all of a sudden it stopped working and won’t power on. About 2 months old, no water damage and wasn’t dropped. Also the front mesh isn’t very durable. I dinged it on a table corner and it dented

The Beats Pill+ was the prior model, but has been discontinued since 2020. Now the newly released Beats Pill has hit the market with a load of refinements and improvements. Some improvements are obvious, such as USB-C charging and charge out, rather than the old standards of Lightning charging and USB-A charge output capacity. Bluetooth refinements are less obvious, but substantial. Battery life has been doubled. There is an attached lanyard for easier, secure handling, but also is easily removable if you prefer a shelf location over mobile toting it around. The only accessory included in the package is a USB-C to USB-C cable, for charging or wired output to other devices. Bluetooth standard has been updated to version 5.3. The most recent Bluetooth protocol is 5.4 (The major difference between 5.3 and 5.4 seems to be technical, in the field of dispersing advertising information to a broad range of low power devices in a commercial setting; not anything that would affect your musical listening or speakerphone utilization of the Pill). So 5.3, introduced widely in 2023, was an important advance for home users. The evolution from Bluetooth 5.0 to 5.3 brought notable enhancements in overall performance, particularly in areas that directly impact user experience. These improvements in 5.3 addressed some of the most common concerns users have had with wireless technology, such as audio quality, connection stability, and latency. So I think 5.3 is going to answer the needs for end users of a portable speaker very nicely for quite a while. The “FindMy” location app will locate your Beats Pill for you, widening the universe of misplaced objects to your search. I didn’t have to do any separate pairing to the Beats Pill; it just showed up on my FindMy under devices tab. 
 Android users will be able to use their location “Find My Devices” as well, since the computer chip in the Beats Pill is built with both iOS and Android capacity. For me and my spouse, the benefit of iOS seamless integration of the speaker with our iPhones made the pairing totally automatic and effortless. We did not need to go to the Bluetooth menu (not a difficult process, of course, but why not have it be automatic). A prompt showed up on the iPhone to one-touch agree to pairing of the Pill. And the same one-touch pairing and auto pairing with Android exists for compatible devices. Older iPhones and Androids may not play well with the auto-pairing, but will require using the established Bluetooth route in your system settings. Compared to the prior Pill+ of a few years ago, this is advertised as being louder output, a bigger bass, and better tonality. The tweeter is housed separately from the “racetrack” bass, so there is no interference between the two. My interpretation of the term “racetrack” is that the perimeter of the bass is not circular, but oval, like a track and field racetrack. This is claimed to provide 28% more motor force, and moving 90% more air volume, with reduction of the low-end distortion. The specifications did not mention the frequency range of output. In my listening, I always try out the opening sequence of Richard Strauss’ tone poem Also Sprache Zarathustra (the sequence utilized by Stanley Kubrick in 2001:A Space Odyssey). That low organ note is 20 Hz, and was not audible with the Pill, so I am assuming the bass range starts higher than 20 Hz… The battery claims a 24 hour charge life (double the Pill+ play duration), and can be used to charge your other small devices, such as your mobile phone, via the USB-C port. Outdoor usage is encouraged, having an IP67 rated dust and water resistance. The prior Pill+ did not even mention such protection ratings. The feel of the speaker is secure in your hand with a grippy matte silicone rubber for about 60% of the perimeter, with the speaker frontage being metal. The speakers themselves are angled up at 20º, so table top placement aim the output towards your ears. The bottom is flattened with 4 small feet to stabilize the speaker on the table or shelf. The lanyard is easily removed, and color matched to your speaker. It weighs about 1.5 lbs. For even more volume, or stereo output, you can add a second Pill. The second speaker can be set to be the same output as the first, or grouped for left and right stereo output. You chose for your desired placement of the two speakers. The Pill will work as a speakerphone for your mobile. The speaker input for your voice is adjacent to the left side on/off button, pinhole size and adjacent to the on/off light. That light also will signal your battery life (green is good, red needs some juice) when you query the Pill. The new Pill adds the champagne gold color, as mine is in my photos, as well as the prior black, white, and red of the Pill+ from 2020. In my listening for about 10-12 hours, I picked eclectic music. As noted above, classical is my first preference, but also included classic rock, New Wave, jazz, a smattering of country. I cannot speak for Rap or Hip-Hop, so your mileage may vary. In summary, and in comparison to several other Bluetooth speakers around the house in a variety of uses, the Beats Pill really clicks all the buttons. Our other BT speakers are in a variety of uses, with mixed results. A largish one in the living room fills the space with better fidelity, but the Pill excels over the smaller speakers that sit on bedside tables and kitchen counter. The only remaining question for us is whether we get a second Champagne color, or a different color so we can identify which is which...

When the Beats by Dr. Dre brand first came on the market, I was less than impressed with the sound signature of their products which to me seemed really bass heavy, to the point of sounding muffled and having no clarity. Apple purchased Beats back in 2014 (I had to look that up), but until now I had shied away from their products because of my initial experiences with their product line. I’m not sure how long it’s been, but this latest iteration of the Beats Pill proves my perceptions to now be completely wrong. This current generation of the Beats Pill was released in June of 2024. Being a pharmacist, the name of the product has a special calling for me, as it looks like an oral medication capsule, especially when in the color red. The Pill comes with a generous 4.5 foot long USB-C to USB-C charging/data cable, a detachable, color-matched lanyard, and a minimal amount of printed documentation in the box. Note that there is no charging adapter, like with most modern rechargeable devices. The Pill is IP67 rated for resistance to water, sand, and dust exposure - this and the lanyard make it suitable for on-the-go use outside of the home or office. At 24 ounces, it is probably not something you will want to carry around for extended periods of time though. There is only one port on the Pill, a USB-C jack on the rear of the speaker. This jack serves a couple different purposes besides being how you charge the Pill’s internal lithium-ion battery. The speaker’s battery can also be used to charge other devices such as your cell phone. This USB-C port will also accept a lossless-quality music signal from your source device when using the cable rather than a Bluetooth connection. For users that are part of the Apple ecosystem, pairing the Beats Pill to your products couldn’t be easier. Hold the “Power” button on the Pill for a few seconds and then tap the “Connect” button that appears in the window on your iPhone. Doing that also immediately added the Pill to the Bluetooth list on my MacBook which had Bluetooth turned on, without doing anything additional on the laptop. For Apple users the Beats Pill will also be seen in the “Find My” app. After pairing, you can use the “EQ” tab in your Music app to tailor the sound to your exact preference. Apple has designed the Beats Pill so that you are able to add a second Pill and use them both in “Amplify Mode” or use “Stereo Mode” to have the two Pills play distinct left and right audio channels from your music source. The Pill contains a single separate woofer (oval shaped for a larger cone area) and a single tweeter, meaning one Pill does not play in true stereo. This newest version of the Pill has the drivers angled up at a 20 degree tilt to better aim the sound waves produced to the listener. While the instructions included in the package are a very rudimentary quick start guide, there is a QR code to scan for a link to a complete user guide. However, I could not find a way to download and save this guide for future use, so if you need to refer to it for any reason (and you will need the info in it for instructions on a couple of features), you need to have an internet connection available. Or you could save about 7 or 8 screenshots of the guide for later reference. The controls on the top of the Pill are similar to other wireless speakers. There is a “Power” button, a “Function” button, and “Volume Down” & “Volume Up” buttons, four concave-shaped buttons in total, and all do exactly what you’d expect of them. To turn on the speaker, a simple quick push will not work, you have to press and hold it for a full 1 to 2 seconds before releasing it. Same with turning it off. Hold the power button too long though and it goes into pairing, or “Discovery” mode (the white light by the power button flashes). This same light is green when the speaker is plugged in and charging. When charging is complete, the light turns white for 10 seconds, then turns off. I find the choice of the color green when charging a little odd and confusing as green often indicates a device is fully charged. Two functions that are not intuitive (hence needing the full user guide), are charging the Pill from another device rather than a charging adapter, and enabling lossless audio transmission from the music source. When you connect the Pill to another device, the Pill will charge the other device. If you want to charge the Pill from the device, you have to press the power button on the Pill three times after connecting the cable. If you want to use the included cable for lossless audio, three hands would make things easier as you have to hold down the power button on the Pill at the same time you plug the cable into the other device (such as your phone). The Beats Pill has what I consider to be a great frequency curve for music reproduction and provides, in my opinion, excellent sound quality very close to what I am used to when using Apple AirPods. The Pill has been redesigned to give surprisingly loud music reproduction with a minimum of distortion. However, perceived bass response seems better to me at lower volumes than when the speaker is pushed to extreme volumes. Sound quality when used as a speaker for phone calls was excellent on both ends of the conversation. The center, “Function” button provides answer, mute, end call, and switch call controls, and there is allowance to make some alterations to the number of presses for these functions. While Beats has designed the Pill to fit into the Apple ecosystem effortlessly, it is also compatible with Android devices and should be given serious consideration by those users looking for a wireless, portable speaker. With a metal grille and a rubberized body, this little speaker has a quality feel and heft that imparts a robust build perception to it. Nicely done, Apple.
