The controls are mechanical - manual says to turn the timer on/off knob past 10 minutes then turn it back to toast for less time. It makes a ticking sound until zero when it 'dings' once and shuts off. No electronics - I love it. The bottom is the crumb tray - it hinges open to clean.

Arguably the best $17 I've ever spent!
