This story about Whitey Bulger and the Winter Hill Gang is spot on. It is played well by Johnny Depp and he is very convincing as Bulger, an murderous scoundrel. I was particularly interested in the part about the Roger Wheeler murder as I was a Tulsa Police Officer at the time an my partner became Mrs. Wheeler's body guard after Roger was murdered in the parking lot of the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa because he wouldn't allow the Winter Hill gang to infiltrate and control the World High Alai sports in Florida that Wheeler owned. There are also interviews with some of the Tulsa detectives who worked the case for years, even thought the FBI knew who the killer was but covered it up and impeded the investigation since Bulger was an informant. I highly recommend this movie!

I've enjoyed all of Scott Cooper's films, from the depressing CRAZY HEART to the gritty white trash of OUT OF THE FURNACE. So I knew it would take something cosmic to make BLACK MASS a complete dud. Packed with great performers (some very well known, others more obscure), this telling of Whitey Bulger's tale feels very real, but plays it at a medium pace. This feels true of Cooper's work so far, but may leave gangster flick fans feeling flat. The movie isn't played for sensationalism or thrills. Johnny Depp as Bulger is doing something much needed to bring him out of the ghetto of cartoonish goofery (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN & the last few Tim Burton flicks) in portraying terrifyingly vipe t restraint.

When released this movie didn't get the greatest reviews. With Best Buy offering this at a very low price I purchased the Blu-Ray and am very glad I did. Johnny Depp does an excellent job portraying Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger. It doesn't delve very deeply into what drove him to be so viscious and since it was made before his capture (and recent demise), the story is of course incomplete. The Blu-Ray video and audio are good, not outstanding but in no way detract from enjoyable viewing. All Depp fans should buy it.

Black Mass is a movie I was thrilled to catch in the theater, having not heard anything about it before it came out. It ended up being my personal favorite movie of last year. Tons of great actors (all of whom did a fantastic job), with the stand out being Johnny Depp of course who transformed to play the role. Highly recommended, especially if you like crime thrillers like Casino, Goodfellas, etc. The movie IS violent, and some of the subject matter could be disturbing to more sensitive viewers (GF wanted me to add that disclaimer!)

Black Mass is a film based on the true crime story of Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger. Bulger is effectively played by an unrecognizable Johnny Depp, who should have at least received an Oscar nomination for his work in this film. The rest of the cast does equally great work with lots of stars in supporting roles. Classic crime film with good period detail.

I am from Boston and can appreciate the difficulty it would take for Johnny Depp to play the part and even come close to a Boston accent. This portrays the gangland murders brutality and the gang members love for family with equal measures. They were fierce in regards to both. This was not a proud time for those of us that loved Boston as much as we loved being Irish. We have to admit that it was true and pray that there will never be this dark a time again.

Depp plays south Boston wiseguy James “Whitey” Bulger, whose heyday was the 70s and 80s. With his bald head and weird blue eyes, Depp’s Bulger is a fully paidup sociopath with a groany-deep voice like Ray Liotta in GoodFellas. His brother, Massachusetts State Senator Billy Bulger, is played with a cat-that-got-the-cream smirk by Benedict Cumberbatch: Billy effectively manages what only be described as the political wing of Whitey’s organisation.

Johnny Depp appears to be up for any character that the role sparks his interest. He transforms himself so well that sometimes it is easy to forget who it is portraying the role. At first, I didn't recognize the movie from the cover and only after beginning to watch it did I associate it with the trailers I had seen when the movie was in the theaters. Great surprise and enjoyed the movie a lot. Great supporting cast.

So good!! Depp is eerily just like Jimmy "Whitey" Bulger. I grew up outside of Boston and my mother worked in Southie in the '80s and 90s. She worked with some older women who grew up with the Bulger Boys. They always said no one messes with them. This movie does an excellent job of portraying South Boston and Boston during that time period. Depp is also one of the few actors to nail a Boston accent. He's just fantastic.

Depp's usual chameleon performances, Capt Jack aside, never seem to go over well, but in this performance he is truly unrecognizable. The plot suffers a lack of build, but the acting and some of the scenes are just too good for that to matter. Definably worth the purchase if a fan of the genre or Depp. It was the academy's opportunity to finally reward his abilities and they dropped the ball, not him.

This is one of those films that is good when you see it, but time passes and you realize how good it actually is. If you’re into gangster films like Goodfellas or A Bronx Tale, Black Sunday is right up there. Also, for the price, even with shipping, it’s worth it. I paid around $10 total.

Johnny Depp is in another criminal role. He was John Dillinger in Public Enemies and now the notorious gangster James "Whitey" Bulger from Boston in the 1970's and 80's. Depp provides a masterful portrayal of the criminal psychopath and is great throughout the entire movie. If you are a true Johnny Depp fan, this is a must see and a movie that should definitely become a part of your DVD library.

Yes, Mr, Depp is back in form after the god awful "Mordecai", which should have been called 'Mortify". He gives a chilling performance and really inhabits the character. In fact, after the make-up, he's almost unrecognizable as Depp. This is a great "gangster" flick and is based on a real person, so if Gangster is your thing, you'll probably enjoy it. 5 stars for Depp's performance alone!

Well done job of depicting Whitey Bulger. The doc "Whitey" on Netflix is a good compliment to watching this one. Johnny Depp is creepy and great, and so is Jesse Plemons. That dude is fantastic in everything. Boston accents are in full force, although hard to hear such a strong Boston accent coming from Benedict Cumberbatch... Good movie. Super gangster, definitely worth watching.

First off, Johnny Depp is transformed in this film. His performance is outstanding. The fact that this is all based on facts and the actors were made to look like the individuals involved in the real events made the film more realistic. If you do not like violence, though this is not as bad as some mafia or revenge based films, some scenes may make you cringe.

I watched the previews on TV and was interested in the plot. Although I haven't been able to watch it, I am giving it 4 stars going by the previews and the actors; maybe deserves a 5. Crime drama based on a true story--the life of Whitey Bulger--an infamous criminal who turned FBI informant to take down a Mafia family.

This is a great movie & I would have given it a 5 star rating but I couldn't let myself to that. I feel that this movie glorified the person way too much! The movie made it seem he was God or something like that & he wasn't! He was a horrible man, criminal, murderer, etc. however, if it was a nonfiction story then this movie would be absolutely awesome!

If you like organized crime movies then definitely watch this movie. It's the dramatized version of Whitey Bulger's reign of terror over Southie. Johnny Depp is absolutely amazing as Whitey and is completely unrecognizable, looks just like him and talks just like him. Even if you're not a fan of crime movies, this movie is still great.

This was a great watch. I would definitely recommend reading the book first, there are a lot of names to keep straight, but once you figure out who's who it is an amazing movie. The story is very interesting, especially if you're from the Boston area, and tells an intriguing tale of some on the most famous mobsters in the history of the city

I wasn’t sure if I’d like the movie or not-it’s taken me years to watch it. Finally decided to order it when it hit a low price..and I wasted a lot of time on waiting to check it out. Should have watched Black Mass years ago! Good gangster Blu ray!
