"Racial" identificaion and ethnic bigotry continue to be enduring challenges confronting American democracy. Costner believes so strongly in the message of this story that he not only starred in it, he became a producer. This film will make any half-way decent person feel very uncomfortable, while bigots, of all stripes, will be falling over each other so that they might testify. A lot of ugly stereotypes and truisms are portrayed and wallowed in, right up to the moments (and there are many) when they are exploded, in small and big ways, for the counterproductive, if not corrosive, toxins that poison narrowing minds. BLACK OR WHITE will challenge everyone about what the Right Things To Do in life are, as much as it will entertain with turns of tenderness, human frailty, socio-economic violence, fear and loathing of "the other" and ample doses of biting humor. The script is very smartly written and the acting rings true across the board. Young Jillian Estell is an actor to keep an eye out for in the future. This is a realistic family drama, but it's also a fable were hot button social issues are boiled down to the personal and inter-personal level, without disrespecting the larger social context (which the viewer needs to keep in her/his own mind, as in reading between the lines).

There is a bond that unites all warm and compassionate human beings who realize that there is only ONE RACE - the HUMAN RACE - and there are NO BARRIERS between the variety of colors, shapes and sizes that define that one race. This movie will warm the coldest heart because it transcends all barriers put up by racial stereotypes by ELIMINATING them. One little girl and one older man are joined at the heart by the simplest yet most powerful of all forces - UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. Do not FAIL to see this movie and EMBRACE all its vital charms!

Though I initially watched thinking the plot would be trite and predictable, I would soon become enveloped into the movie and was pleasantly surprised with the progression and ending of the movie. All of the actors in this production did an excellent job with character development and before the end of the movie you could empathize with the points of view of ALL characters. You won't dislike any of the characters by te end of this movie and you'll love others.

I loved the film Black or White. This film was heartwarming. Black or White showed the love between a little girl and her family as well as, the custody battle between her maternal white grandfather and her paternal black grandmother, after the death of her maternal white grandmother. Despite the differences and struggles between the two families, they shared one thing in common, their love and the well-being of their granddaughter.

I loved the way serious issues were addressed, while wrapping them in folds of 2 of the best dramatic, yet comical, actors on screen. I laughed and cried throughout this movie, and I think every person who has family members (or are themselves) dealing with these issues, or just family drama, should see this film.

Wonderful movie. All about family...This movie makes you feel every emotion you can imagine. You will experience anger, laughter, tears and joy. It shows no matter what we (adults) think or feel, we must always look at what is in the best interest of the child. You can watch this movie with your children.

As our population continues to grow, there are more and more mixed race families. And this movie showed some of the issues that come from having a mixed race family. But it did it nicely, with a great storyline and how the two different sides resolved their differences for the benefit of the child.

Emotions run high in this movie. That's what happens when drugs, alcohol, broken and extended family relationships are involved. We really liked the movie. Definitely not for kids. I liked how they didn't show too much of the drugs. I did not like all the fowl language. It is NOT necessary for a good movie. The worst part for me is taking the Lord's name in vain.

Kevin Costner played his role expertly & worked through his issues with Octavia's role as being a part of his granddaughter's upbringing. Love the balance reached, great for the child. (I'm bad @ remembering character names). But I remember content.

I am a part of large family with interracial marriages and children of mixed blood. It includes white, black, Hispanic, Chinese and Filipino. We, as a family, can relate very well to this movie. The truth is LOVE HAS NO COLOR! And the movie demonstrates this fact!

When this movie first came out, I wanted to go and watch it as it is an excellent family movie. Good things come to those who wait - Best Buy had a very good deal on this movie and I purchased right away. Thanks Best Buy! Keep offering deals of the day!!

This is a sensative topic in most communities. This portraial is honest and heart warming. Showing faults in both sides with a growth in understanding as both sides work to care for a common interest. Acting was well done but the story was exceptional.

Love this movie. Kevin Costner is fantastic and the little girl is amazing! Great story. So much heart. Took a tough subject and made an excellent movie out of it. Sad this movie didn't get the publicity it deserved.

Too much time spent on the polarization. More time should have been spent with the grand parents having a heart to heart. They both were convincing in wanting what was best for the granddaughter, but it felt like everyone agreeing to keep the movie within a certain time frame.

I missed seeing this movie in the theater, and really wanted to see it. Was on the fence about buying it because the reviews were not very good. I was happily surprised how much I enjoyed the movie. It was based on a true story, and it was nice to see a happy ending for all.

This movie provides a glimpse into the reality of cultural upbringings and a drift between families. Though not based on a true story, I am certain that for some, this is a reflection of their lives.

This movie is a story that really pulls at your heart strings. The story is one that you can appreciate. The acting is superb and I congratulate Kevin Costner for bringing this story to the screen.

This is great movie. It show the struggle of a widower and his granddaughter who is black. Her grandmother wants to take her away because she believes a whiten an can't take care of a black child.
