A product ahead of it's time

One of the few small electronics companies that has put some real effort into genuinely usable feature updates and a product that is both unique and pleasant to use. This is an amazing ereader and an okay tablet. Keep in mind being that it is an ereader first and this would be an irrelevant notion if this thing wasn't running a true implementation of android 10 and because of this it doesn't have autobrightness, the screen orientation needs to be adjusted manually since it doesn't have an accelerometer, and it also doesn't have speakers. However it has great battery life, a thin form factor, a backlight with a cool/warm setting that works great for both day and night time reading, and the looks and I would argue (if you have the flip cover) the feel of a regular book. The company has been gradually updating this device to improove it's gesture functionality, it's motion rate settings, it's navagation ball, and it's overall performance which is nice to see from a brand that most people don't know about. The fact that it is running android allows it to run any app I can throw at it making things like reading the news feel a little more like a print publication, browsing websites feels a little less distracting than on a traditional device, and it's nice to not be locked into a single resource for buying or downloading books. Don't like kindle? Use the nook store. Don't like the nook store? Use Google books. Do you like manga? Well you can download crunchyroll. Do you have a bunch of free epubs from project gutenberg but don't like the built in reader app? Download moon reader. The amount of choice and functionality while maintaining a decent processor and storage space while still being under $200 makes this thing one of my favorite gadgets. Finding a case for it is admittedly difficult but onyx sells them on their website if you don't mind the wait. If the lack of autobrightness and accelerometer is a deal breaker the onyx boox note air 2 is another option which LOOKS nice though I've never used it.

A Practical Choice for Independent Reading

The poke3 is a pragmatic solution for readers who appreciate independence. Its open-source nature is the standout feature, ensuring freedom from Amazon's ecosystem. The lightweight design and paper-like display offer a comfortable reading experience, and the extensive library is convenient. While not overly exciting, the adjustable backlight and impressive battery life add practical value. The poke3 is a sensible choice for those seeking an e-reader that prioritizes open-source flexibility over proprietary limitations.

Awesome android e reader! Got it for some bedside

Couldn't find a e reader that was affordable and also ran android until I found some recs for the boox poke3. I am beyond happy with this e reader. Thee flushed screen is nice, I loaded up google play books , moon+reader and moved some of my textbooks and manga to the device. It's excellent, light, sleek and functional. Now I can enjoy my favorite books in one device. E readers do not emit blue light so I can finally get a decent sleep after bedside reading. E ink devices while more expensive than their lcd counterparts are so much easier on the eyes and feel like reading a real book, so it is an absolutely must have for me.

    Great Kindle Alternative

Provides e-ink reading experience with apps other than Kindle. Google Play Store could be enabled and provide access to all android apps. In using the tablet you have to accept that there will be a ghosting on screen sometimes as you switch between apps. It's not a deal breaker. Play with settings until you're happy. I don't consider this a replacement for my main tablet. This tablet is great for reading. It's lighter and smaller than Kindle Paperwhite.

Pretty good device. My only gripe is the page turning function is just a little awkward. Otherwise it's perfect.

    Best e-reader

This is the best e-reader I've ever used! I can access my giant Kindle library, my Google Play Books library, and easily load up my epubs I've purchased from humble bundle on this thing! It's running Android 10 so you can install nook or Kobo too. I loaded my OneDrive and move epubs that way. With Instapaper or Pocket, I can grab web articles for reading on my e-reader later. I installed Wikipedia for longer articles as well. This device is fantastic for longer reading and the eink is much easier on your eyes. Setting up the Google Play store was simple. The lighting options are much better than anything else on the market. Don't buy a Kindle, get this! The only downside to this vs a Kindle is the battery life is slightly lower (I've been reading a ton lately, but can get a few days off battery life on this thing) and it's not waterproof. The extra features knock it out of the park though.

    Promising concept, not yet mature

I have a fairly large collection of books on the Kindle app. I bought this Boox device because the Kindle Paperwhite does not read all books that can be read on a Kindle app (facepalm when I realized that). After fiddling for about an hour with the Boox, I finally got Google Play to download, and also downloaded the Kindle app. Kindle app books downloaded quickly. The native format on the Boox reads well, slightly better than the Paperwhite IMO. However, reading via the Kindle app is an exercise in frustration. The experience was similar to reading PDF documents, ie, pinching to increase the font size did not resize the page to fit the screen. Also, rendering of the text was poor and somewhat fuzzy, like reading a poor-quality print book that fell in water. I think it will take another few years for the technology to mature. I returned the Boox and I’m sticking with the Paperwhite for now,

Good option for owners of Nook and Kindle ebooks

I bought this ereader because over the years I have purchased ebooks in the Nook and Kindle system. I prefer the e-ink readers over the regular android or apple tablets; I don't get eyesight fatigue from reading books on this reader like I did from a backlit tablet. One caveat: setting up the Google play store took a few reboots before it was recognized by Google. I had to install the latest Nook/Kindle from the Google play store before I could download my books.

This ereader is great. I've used it to read a couple books. It's extremely lightweight and the battery life goes weeks on a charge, even with the adjustable soft yellow to bright white backlight on. Great for using just before bed. The ereader can sideload Android apps or even the google play store, so you're not limited to the formats it natively can open. You can also download Libby, Google Play Books, Kobo Books, or Kindle Reader once you install the google play apps with the easy to follow instructions. If you're using PDFs, you'd be better off splurging on the boox Nova3 or boox Air, which have 7.8 to 10" respectively. There's also a color ereader using new technology but I reviewed the monochromatic version most are familiar with.

Boox products use dual-band Wi-Fi modules, which offers the ability to connect to the two frequencies used by home Wi-Fi networks: 2.4 and 5 GHz. We have not had any complaints regarding Wi-Fi before, so we understand that it may be a specific and isolated quality issue, which can always happen. We apologize for the bad experience received and hope you can rely on one of our products in the future.
For the use of Internet or third party applications, we have developed 4 different modes for screen refresh (Normal mode, Speed mode, A2 mode, and X mode). We recommend switching to A2 and/or X modes for a better experience when using these applications. If you did not switch to these modes, it is normal for the user experience to be slow at times. If you purchase one of our products again in the future, please try these changes and you will see that the experience is very different.
