    Awful center speaker for clarity

I have tried many center speakers, and this B&W speaker is probably the most overrated center speaker I have ever tried. Dialogue clarity is poor (even when bi-wired) and worse than center speakers that cost $200. I suspect the poor clarity is due to the low sensitivity rating. A speaker which requires you to crank up the volume just to get better dialogue clarity defeats the purpose of having a nice center speaker. Plus, you will go deaf. Even the on-sale price of $720 is outrageously expensive. Even if I liked this speaker, I would say this speaker is worth no more than $400. If you are seeking better dialogue clarity, try other brands. The wide compatibility of 8 ohms is the only positive aspect of this speaker. B&W, if you are listening, re-do this center speaker as a high sensitivity one (eg 94 dB) and keep it at 8 ohms.

I received this center channel speaker to test through the best buy tech insider network at no cost to provide my unbiased opinion. I also received a matching pair of front speakers. I am replacing a pair of onkyo speakers (and center channel) that came matched with my 7.1 surround speaker system. I have loved this system since day one but it is now 10 years old and I'm looking at slowly upgrading to newer system. First off, these speakers are nothing like I've dealt with before with recent technology. They are solid built wood like cabinets and weigh quite a bit. I'm used to speakers from the 70's and 80's weight this much. Most current speakers, even nice ones are platic or partially plastic and lesser wood. These seem much more substantial, like a thick manufactured wood/polymer they used for decorative coverings on my front porch pillars that are meant to be lifetime maintenance free. They are black, and could be a solid wood of sometype, but has a polymer coating covers that. Around 16lbs each. They are build like mini loudspeakers for a PA system, just solid. This company did start out building PA loudspeakers, and with these, they didn't break the tradition. These do take up a lot more space than my old speakers, but It is worth it. I notice there is no degrading in the sound when I push the volume levels higher than my normal range (20 to 25 setting). Sound stay crisp bass and treble stay separate, no muffling. I have much more low end sound without having to turn up my sub, especially at night. I notice that during movies that the dialogue to action changes are a bit less to struggle with, talk to loud booms that make me turn down the dial. Because I can keep the sound a bit lower I do not have to go deaf when an explosion occurs and still hear the talk when it goes quiet. The detachable screens are very nice, good strength magnets that are secure allows me to blow any dust out of them and put them on easily. I have tested these for over two weeks to really break them in, generally used 8 hours a day with daily tv or music playing through them and am pleased with them. I notice that the balance of bass and treble is better than in my original system speakers, so when I turn down the subwoofer and bass at night, I am still able to hear deeper tone dialogue voice better. My only disappointment with them is they really do need a shelf for use, there is no way to mount these to a wall with a bracket. Many speakers come with hook holes or threaded mount holes, these do not. I had to add a shelf above my tv for the center channel speaker. I feel it will be worth it in the long run. These really do shine best with music, but still very good for a surround sound home theatre system. Overall, If you have the money and want guaranteed quality, these are likely the last speakers you ever need to buy for your home sound system.

I need to preface this review by saying I am by no means an audiophile. I'm not familiar with the science or the technical jargon so I'm not going to pretend like I'm an expert at sound quality. I categorize myself as an enthusiast. I've invested in a decent receiver, home theater system, cables, etc. And I care about what I listen to enough to know what I like and don't like, and notice when something is lacking. The design is a rather conservative rectangular box with sharp edges. The only eye catching aspect of its design are the silver cones. The finish is a matte black vinyl-looking plastic. Some may find this boring, but since I use it in my home theater setup, I prefer less eye catching things in my field of vision while I'm watching something on TV. The grill attaches to the speaker magnetically, which I love. It's easy to remove or install it to the speaker with one hand, and effortless since the magnets always guide it to attach in its proper position. it's no longer a chore to remove the grill if I ever want to sport an industrial look. I reviewed this center speaker along with the 603 S2 Anniversary edition floorstanding speakers and not only do they complement each other perfectly, they share similar characteristics. The clarity lives up to its claim. For OTA TV sound, it's just clear without sounding muffled or muddy. Likewise with movies. The great thing about these speakers is I'm able to hear dialog clearly even in low volume. It doesn't lose its high resolution. I highly recommend this speaker in a home theater setup. The center channel is where the dialog in movies is predominantly played and with this speaker it's a joy to listen to.

Note: I tested these in conjunction with the matching floorstanding speakers. I’ve been listening to this center channel for about 2 weeks now and can honestly say it is an amazing speaker. I’ve enjoyed every moment of owning it. Design: The design of this speaker is really beautiful. I love the color of the drivers. The box is very sturdy and well-built. The speaker came with plastic feet which was fine, but I will likely upgrade to a wall mount. Ease of Use: The speaker was relatively easy to set up: wire them like one would wire other speakers. The speaker offers both a traditional connection method or one can use banana clips (my preference). My only complaint was that the covers for the banana clips were not easy to get out. (Tip: use a paper clip and push from the inside of the post.) So, how do they sound? Music sounds great on these. I listened to a number of styles to really put these through the paces. The vocals come through crisp on this speaker. It was not difficult at all to understand the lyrics. Likewise, the middle and high ranges sounded particularly great. Video also sounds great on these. It is extremely nice to have this speaker as it makes dialogue really easy to understand. Overall, I felt that having the center channel with the floorstanding speakers really helped create the soundstage. This is a really great addition to a 5 channel setup.

I got this with the accompanying B&W 600-series towers to upgrade my home theater. This setup really helped improve the vocals and finer details in movies, tv, and video games. This is by far the largest and heaviest center channel speaker I've seen. I haven't ventured very deep in the high-end surround speaker systems, so maybe this is standard on these higher end speakers. But, given it's size, I have to do a bit of re-arranging of equipment on my entertainment center to make room for this monster. It's sitting on the top shelf of my tv stand/entertainment stand, and the TV is mounted on a center post in the back. This means the bass port is lined up with that metal center post. After playing some games and watching some TV, I noticed vocals were sounding way too deep compared to everything else, and what I'd expect from a center channel. So, I added the included foam plug into the bass port to help dampen the bass, which really seemed to do the trick. I probably wouldn't buy this alone, but paired with the towers, it will really improve your movie experience.
