One of the best games of 2025, a superb story with awe inspiring music and a fun combat system. Clair Obscur is among the finest examples of video games this generation has produced.

Every so often a game comes along that shakes the industry to its core. This is that game. It not only is game of the year it’s game of the decade. From humble beginnings of a team of 33 people to now selling over 5 million copies, Expedition 33 is a quite simply a masterpiece.

Extreme
Clair Obsur: Expedition 33 is a marvel of a video game. A game-changing, genre-bending masterpiece. It serves as a testament to the passion of what can be accomplished by a talented team, rivaling the efforts of giant monolith publishers that have three times the budget and resources. It converted me into seeking out other turn-based experiences, but this excellent game may have spoiled me.

Fantastic game - beautiful art direction, sound design, music, voice acting. All best in the industry levels. The "twitch-turn-based" combat system is fun and with some mild refinements would be even better. The only issues I have with Clair Obscur come late game in both story and game progression. For the first two "acts" of the game, the story is emotional and engaging. There is a "twist" after the second act, which SHOULD propel you into a very compelling end game. Unfortunately, after this twist there is only one mandatory area/quest, with everything else being optional and unmarked, without any efficient way to gauge level-appropriateness (they are often wildly level-gated for way beyond what an avg player will have on a normal first playthrough) or what pertinent story elements by be developed there-in. As a result, most players will likely be funneled directly into the end encounter too soon. There are huge story developments that are crucial to understanding what's going on post-twist, and you can easily miss them entirely. This results in the ending of the story feeling rushed and unsatisfying. The twist in this lack-of-context setting deflates a lot of the emotion from the story on both sides of the shift, undermining your connection to the world and characters without building them back up again by the finale. There are even entire game SYSTEMS you can easily miss out on, not to mention a huge variety of enemy types you will simply never see. All of this game and story content IS THERE, but with a complete lack of guidance in how best to approach it (indeed, to even shine a light on the fact that it exists in many cases) you are left with an underwhelming and abrupt end to what to that point had been a magical experience. The game is a marvel of AA-level game development, was so much fun to play, gorgeous to look at and listen to, and I was so compelled to see where the story was headed that this end game misstep was heartbreaking to me. I would still highly recommend the game, but one should go in with the warning NOT to simply go to the quest marker for the final quest after the story twist, and instead perhaps look up a guide on how to best traverse and tackle the optional unmarked areas scattered across the world map that have SO MUCH important story contained there-in.

Great gameplay. Great story. Memorable characters and art style. In my opinion, this game may be seen as the start of a new iconic RPG franchise years from now, a la Final Fantasy.

A wonderful game that reinvigorated my love for the JRPG genre. It’s a touching tale about the nature of grief and loss, and also has excellent art and fun gameplay, too.
This is genuinely one of the best games I’ve played in a while. It is definitely worth a try!

An outstanding full length turn based RPG with an amazing, heart-wrenching narrative, lovable cast, and an actively engaging, action oriented turn based RPG combat system, the likes that are comparable to another outstanding turn based RPG, Lost Odyssey. And all at $50, made with a reasonable budget, in a time where games are increasing in price while decreasing in quality. If modern Final Fantasy games have disappointed you, or you just want to experience what will likely be a landmark title for this studio and generation of games, please consider this game, either via purchase here, or through Xbox Game Pass.

Clair Obscur is such an amazing game. From the moment I started playing it, I was hooked. The characters & storyline are so original. And I love that they brought back turn based battles but with a unique twist. If you love RPGs, this is a must-have.

This is the type of game that I have been waiting a long time for, something that the triple A studios have given up making. From the presentation to gameplay, this feels like something that once upon a time we’d have gotten from a big publisher. But no, this was made by a small team with a lot of heart. I’m glad I was able to order this last minute before the physical PS5 version was hard to get. If you miss the old school turned base Final Fantasy games, but made with awesome modern production values, you won’t regret picking this up,

This game is amazing... The characters and voice acting are VERY well done. Story is awesome, and the world they built is so unique and weird in a good way. The reactive turn-based recipe they have going on with the gameplay is so fun. The build crafting is great in this too. There are many build paths you can take for each character and it's fun trying to build ability synergies between your team members

The expedition is certainly an intriguing project to consider for gaming enthusiasts. The visuals showcased are promising, hinting at a unique and artistic style. Exploring the game world should be a captivating experience, offering opportunities for discovery. The potential for an engaging narrative could elevate the overall experience on the platform. I anticipate that the game will deliver a memorable experience for players.

I’ve never been much of a turned based rpg fan but I have really gotten in to this game. Enjoying the story and combat. Very challenging on normal difficulty. You almost have to die a couple times to get the timing down on your parries and dodges. You can do either or but there’s more reward for parries. The dodge has a bit better timing window if your not a soulslike game player. I’m only about 8-10 hours in. And bravo to the developers on there first game from there studio and to only charge $50 for it after Nintendo and Xbox announce $80 games. I’m looking forward to more from this studio.
