Story, Characters, Music, Art… Clannad has it all! No matter what your passion for Anime, Clannad should have something for you. Clannad is the third installment of a series of visual novels turned Anime by the studio Key/Visual Arts. Like its two predecessors, it’s a harem/drama; and if you’ve seen any of Key’s work like Air or Kanon, you know its more drama than harem. Unlike most of the silly harem series out there, eventually the main character does find one girl to pursue and actually does so. This 2-disc set is the second of four installments in the series containing 12 episodes (13-24) which brings us to the end of season 1. Each season is actually 22 episodes with 2 OVAs for the first season and 3 OVAs for the second. Disc 1: In the first couple of episodes we find out Kotomi’s back story. Her haunting past is eating at her heart, and only Tomoya can save her from her nightmares. Next we finally return to the original plot that brought these friends together, reviving the drama club. But the student counsel is standing in their way. Their only hope is to support a change in leadership. Enter Tomoyo Sakagami the tough, beautiful, and brilliant transfer student… Tomoya decides to assist her campaign for the top seat and in return she will stop the council’s stone-walling. However this turns into more of an ordeal than Tomoya bargained for as Tomoyo has her own unique history and one singular purpose for wanting to be student council president. In the midst of all this, she discovers a faint stirring in her heart revolving around Tomoya. All of this is creating nothing but problems for Kyou who is desperately trying to get Tomoya and Ryou together while burying her own feelings and desires. Disc 2: With all of the chaos behind them, the members of the Drama Club are now officially free to start planning for the school festival. Tomoya is feeling more and more that he faintly remembers Nagisa’s story of the Lonely Girl in the Other World, and with that comes a strange foreshadowing from the other world. It’s been a bumpy road so far but planning seems to be going well. That is until the star performer suddenly uncovers a secret about her past that threatens to shatter her dreams. All of it leading us to the climax of the first season and the performance of the “Girl from the World that has Ended.” Episode 23 is an “Extra Chapter” that follows the events of the festival and has some fun tribulations for are two companions. Episode 24 is an “Alternate World” arc that follows the course of “what if Tomoyo and Tomoya fell in love.” There is plenty of passion between them, but reality will try and drive them apart. It’s easily my favorite episode of the series.
