Solid Offering for a Fixed-Location Security Cam

The Defender - Guard Indoor/Outdoor 1440p Wi-Fi Wireless Network Surveillance Camera is a solid offering - especially if your goal is to install it in a fixed location near a power source. Once installed, it works as expected via it's companion App - good video, great night vision, decent sound and motion detection. It does not have 2-way audio, but, since it's not a smart doorbell, that doesn't matter to me. Things to consider: - It relies on constant, wired power, so it needs to be within use of an outlet. Thus installation requires running the cords in the most cosmetic manner available. - Also, the dongle for attaching an ethernet cable (an added feature) is hard-wired and unsightly - especially if you have no need of it. - Setting up and using the camera via the App requires establishing a registered ID and password before you can begin. I found the process confusing and was unsuccessful until I experimented with the UI. The problem for me was this: a check-box that I needed to click on already had an arrow in the box and so I thought the process was frozen. Eventually discovered that I still needed to click on the filled-in check box. My bad, I know, but still unintuitive. If you're looking for a rugged security camera for a fixed location, this is a solid offering.

The camera was very easy to set up using the app on my Android phone. Within a few seconds, I was viewing video from the camera on my phone. So far, video is very clear and adjusts well to night and day time use. There is a waterproof clip included in case you need to install it in a wet location, and a stick-on template to help drill holes and line things up. The neck of the camera adjusts to allow just about any angle and direction you might need. I didn't see the ghosting and other artifacts I have seen on other cameras when installed too close to a reflective surface, but it may be because I am getting better at picking mounting locations! There is a panel that can be removed by two screws to expose the reset switch and a micro-SD card slot to add more storage. The power cable that is included is fairly long, but they also include a long extension cable to make it even better for reaching those corners. Wi-Fi was easy to set up and it also has a hard-wired connection if you would rather have it. No ethernet cable is included, so prepare to run your own if you want to hardwire it. I had the opportunity to interact with their customer service and found them very efficient and helpful. I may add more of these to my property, they are inexpensive for the resolution and features and can be managed from a single screen on my phone.

I picked this camera up because my back yard neighbor has been using the easement that separates our houses as their own personal dumping ground. I need a camera good enough to catch when they do it so that I can deliver the evidence to the proper authorities. At this point, the cost of the camera is far less than the cost of the cleanup. The camera itself was quite easy to install and set up. I've had a variety of other security cameras and being able to navigate one system pretty much lets you navigate all of them. I'm not really a handyman, but mounting the camera was simple. Picture is good. All in all, I'm happy with the quality and ease of use for the price. The one thing that did throw me was that I wasn't expecting a power cord. My own fault for not reading between the lines. When I saw that it was a WiFi, Wireless system, I assumed that it would have a substantial battery that would occasionally need to be brought inside for charging. No, in fact, this system needs access to an electrical outlet. I was pretty fortunate that we have an outlet near where I was planning to mount the camera, but others might not be so lucky. For the price, I recommend this, but only if you have a handy electrical outlet near where you want to mount the camera.

The Defender camera is a nice and affordable camera that offers a added touch of personal security for those wishing to to escape the monthly fees that most companies make you pay. What the the real question boils down to is rather or not this is going to fit the bill for your homes needs. Hopefully this review will help to answer any questions or doubt. First off lets talk about what you can expect out of the box. You will receive the main camera, over 20 feet of power cable, instruction manual, and necessary mounting hardware. This is a indoor/outdoor camera so it can be mounted either inside or outside however due to the fact that it is meant to withstand water such as rain and snow mix i would suggest using this outside near an entrance. The hardest part about this set up is having to drill about 8 inches through your homes wall to run the power cable. The cable does not need to be hardwired in to a power source but will plug in to any wall outlet you have. Once the initial mounting set up is complete you can then go to the app store and download the fee app which is necessary to access your camera's settings and wifi set up. Wifi set up is quick and easy. I tried to run this set up off my high speed band but for some reason it tend to favor the 2.4ghz line instead. Either way once set up was complete video footage and streaming was smooth and flawless on the 2.4 band. Now let me talk about the functions and some of the key features that set it apart. Now to just to clarify i own about 4 different security cameras so this unit was tested against several other cameras. In the way of picture quality and function this a pretty standard camera. The quality is based on your connection but expect 1080 quality with clear audio. Night vision is actually very good and the camera lens does a pretty decent job at providing a decent wide angle field of vision. With modern day technology these are some pretty standard things to expect from a security camera. If your camera does not offer this bare minimum then you need to upgrade it. The app provides a way for you to view live footage and will even give you push notifications. With these basic functions out of the way lets talk about what really sets this apart from others. First off, one of the first things i noticed about this set up was the lack of subscription or even the ability to sign up for one. The camera provides a 16 gig sd card for storage which can be upgraded for larger storage. Once storage is full it will start to over write the old footage. This is their way of eliminating monthly subscription plans. While this is a good idea i have some mixed feelings about this and i'll tell you why. At 16 gigs of storage you can expect to get about 2 weeks of stored footage obviously depending on how much foot traffic you get and your motion setting. I personally like having cloud storage even if it means paying for it in the event that something happens in the neighborhood that you may not of been aware of. I'll give you an example of what i mean. About a year ago there were some break ins in the neighborhood that i was not aware of due to the fact that i work alot of long hours. Well i get a knock on my door one day from the police asking if i have seen anyone suspicious or if my camera had caught anything. Luckily i have 6 months of cloud storage and had to go back about a month. Long and behold i caught the people on my camera and it appears they were scoping out my house until they made eye contact with my camera and saw they were being recorded and left. The point im trying to get out is sometimes its nice to have the cloud storage available if you tend to live a busier life. Now getting back to the app and some of its features. The app allows you to set your motion sensitivity which determines how easily it is triggered. On top of that you can also set up motion parameters which the camera focuses on and will send push notifications should someone or something enter that area. This feature i thought was really cool and a really nice feature to have that i have yet to see on any other cameras so far. Well other then that the other features the app offers are standard to most other cameras. You can switch between motion recording or continuous recording. You can adjust camera settings and push notifications and so on. Here's my final thoughts on this set up. Its a good camera and does offer alot. The removal of subscription plans is nice and the ability to adjust your motion sensitivity level is the icing on the cake. There are no flood lights built in or alarms. This is strictly meant for monitoring and not meant to be a home alarm system. If you are not handy then you will need some help setting this up. The 2.4 band works flawlessly and streaming this device off a 60mbps connection was more than enough with no lag or drop outs. The audio is crystal clear and night vision is phenomenal, which is very important since alot of crimes take place at night. Over all if your on the fence on wanting a security camera for your home, then this a good entry level as it has a lot to offer including no payment plans and a low purchase price. Pros : -Good picture quality -No monthly plan -Good audio -Ability to set up motion perimeters -Ability to adjust motion sensitivity Cons: -Requires some know how to install -Limited storage

    Budget Friendly Option

The Defender Guard Indoor/Outdoor Wi-Fi Surveillance Camera is a quality budget friendly option for home security. In an industry where there are so many options, this is simply another option. There are a ton of wifi cameras, night vision cameras, and cameras where you can watch notifications on your cellphone. However, you don’t have a ton of options where you get all these features in this price range. PROS: Infrared or Night vision option: This camera does not only work in the daytime hours, it works at night. Using infrared technology, within a specific range it will shows decent detail in the dark. If you get too far away, it an be a bit grainy, but it does have decent detail in the 50 feet range where I tested it. Wifi: I would not buy anything that didn’t have a wifi option, so getting it was an expectation. I didn’t want anything wired in order to get linked to my system. View/Clarify: The vision says it is 2K, which is obviously decent. I liken it to HD on a clear day. It has sort of a fish-eye lens, which but not quite as wide of a field of vision. But still really good with good detail. Weather proof: Where I mounted it, this camera is definitely out in the elements. It is mounted under the roof eaves, but it is exposed to the cold for sure. So far in Washington, we have gotten down below freezing. So far so good! CONS: The App: The app is not super reliable. My router is directly behind the wall where the camera is, and has line of sight through a window. Still, using the App could be more intuitive. I don’t like the interface and the reviews online for the app show others feel the same way. I am using an iPhone so you know. Wiring: I don’t like the fact that I had to wire it to a power source. I know it makes the signal stronger as far as a power source, but it was not simple to wire up. I read reviews of others having the same issue. Some ended up just hanging the camera above a power outlet, or doing that and using it indoors. I am not a carpenter. I am not an electrician. But with a combination of youtube videos and some creative thinking I got the job done. Bottom line, if you use this for what it is (an outdoor camera) you need to have a little bit of talent to wire it up correctly. Running it to an outlet with dangling cords is pointless, and it takes an intruder second to disable it. Wiring it correctly in a place they don’t really look it is a bit more challenging. But if done correctly you have a decent camera set up. I recommend it to an advanced user that wants features and has the ability to do the install. Otherwise you will need to pay to get the device set up.

    Night Vision Completely Worthless

Night Vision does not function! The infrared array does NOT activate. It has an IR cut filter to turn them on. There is NOT a function in the application to turn the night vision on were it comes on automatically. All the cameras I have that actually has a functioning night vision, have 3 different selections, for night vision. A camera I have only 3 feet away from the location I was checking the camera at has night vision that works perfectly all the time. And it has 3 selections for night vision, with automatic the night vision I selected. For me the Defender Guard does not have any value even if it would be for free. Inquiries at the Defender Web site, have an unbelievable solution, which states to unplug it for 10 minutes, and just maybe it will function. I even tried this nonsense, and night vision still did NOT activate. It did activate for 3 seconds by shining a light at the lens. I am returning the 2 cameras. I even purchased them on a sale at half price. If they were 10 dollars I still would not buy the Defender Guard surveillance cameras. And the support website is worthless.

A Quick Solution That's Surprisingly Good

It seems I’m always in need of another security camera. Just when I think I have everything covered, I notice a whole or blind area that could use my attention. The Defender Guard camera definitely offers an opportunity to help in this regard. The box for this camera is pretty straightforward – standard cardboard fare, with nothing fancy. You have all the cables and hardware for mounting the device whether inside or out. The power cord is fairly long but could be longer in my opinion. I say this because you have no other option but to power this device by plugging it into an outlet. The camera design is very basic. There is an antenna for wireless connectivity, and the camera is attached to a rigid mount which can be removed. The neck allows rotation and tilting, but you will need a screwdriver in order to change the camera’s tilt. I know this sounds like an inconvenience, but when installed in a reachable location, a person would have a very difficult time changing the viewing angle of the camera. Installation is easy – mount it, run the cable, power it up. I you choose to mount the camera outside of your door, you will need to create an opening allowing the power cord to be fed inside. Well, anywhere this camera installed, you must account for powering the camera. Once the camera is powered on, you will need the Defender Guard app to configure the camera. Using the app was actually much easier than expected. Within minutes, I had the camera set up and recording motion activated instances. The camera has its own SD card on board (16GB), and it is removeable and upgradeable (up to 128GB). All recordings are stored there and accessible via the app. As long as you are connected to the same wireless network as the camera, you can view its content and live feed. The Defender Guard surprised me with its video quality. It’s respectable and really gives a good picture, day or night. The night mode has great distinction in objects and depth and isn’t quite as grainy as other devices I have used in the past. The motion detection was spot on, capturing video at the very hint of movement. So, is this a keeper? Well, considering you have no service fees, no internet requirement, and no need for a cloud service, and the fact that it captures and displays excellent video in both day and night modes, the Defender Guard is one of the best options out there for quick, no hassle camera security. I highly recommend it for users at any level.

I'm pretty impressed with this camera. I have the Arlo 2 camera setup, but I'm on a corner lot and I need a few more. The price for additional cameras is a bit much, so I've put it off for now. Then this Defender unit was available and it allows me a nice shot of the front porch and door. My garage is attached and I just needed to feed the power cable through the same hole as one of the Arlo cameras. I downloaded the Android app for Defender and followed the directions. The only thing was the light never turned flashing green, so after a few minutes I just tried to add the camera to the app and no problem. The app saw the camera, added it and then the light turned a steady green. I unplugged the unit, took it outside and mounted it to the underside of the eave (soffit). I fed the power cable (included in the kit) plus the extender cable...also included and plugged it into a 110 outlet. The power cable has a small power brick on the 110 plug. The WiFi works great. My router is in the den and the signal has to pass through one garage interior wall with 1/2" and 5/8" sheetrock on each side as well as 3/32 sheer ply. Then it has to pass through either the garage door or an exterior wall with 5/8" sheetrock and stucco. The signal works and I get a great picture. I was wondering how the microsd card was going to work and it's behind a cover with 2 screws. It's still possible to remove, but I figure they'll just take the whole camera before messing with that. When the camera senses movement, it sends the phone a message. You can record, take a snapshot and it has audio to boot. If you catch the message, even if they take the unit, you'll have the snaps and video on your phone. For what it is, this is a good solution to my setup. If Arlo lowers the price of the addon cams or I come into more funds, that would be the ultimate solution, but for me, a few more of these defender units would be a welcome addition to my security needs. Just remember you'll need a 110 power source close by. I put mine in some bx conduit to make it more difficult to cut the power cable. The Arlo's have a battery so having the cable cut doesn't affect the ability to record. They are usually unplugged anyway. I'd highly recommend the Defender cameras to anyone looking for an easy setup that they can monitor with their smartphone.

This camera is very simple, easy to setup (more on that), and the app works great so far. It looks and feels rock solid and performs very well. Like most Wi-Fi enabled devices the first thing you do is download the app. Then you open the app and create a new account. This is where things came to a grinding halt. You enter your email address and they are supposed to send you a confirmation code which is required to create your account and ultimately setup the device. The code never came...never. I hit resend, hit back and tried again, uninstalled the app and tried again. Nothing, no code, couldn't continue. I even went as far as emailing the app developer via the app store, they never responded. After a few days I decided to try again but this time with a different email address. Boom, the code came instantly. Good grief. It is not ideal as I could not use the email I use for literally every one of my start device accounts. What if this happened to someone who only has one email address? I am not sure how common this issue is or if it is some kind of one off. I'll never know as the company never responded to my issue. Anyways, after I setup my account the camera installation was a breeze. You select "add camera", scan the QR code on the cam, enter your Wi-Fi password, and you are good to go. Very smooth, very nice. I then mounted it above my back door, adjusted it using my little helper (kid), and I was now more secure than I was a day ago. The app is very easy to use. You can live stream the feed with very little delay, you can setup motion detection settings, and capture photos and video recordings. I really like using the app, more than my Arlo app. The only thing I don't like is that the camera only has one way communication. It has a Mic but no Speaker. Also, the app does not work with Alexa. Hopefully it becomes a skill so I can lookup my feed on my fire tv. Overall this camera and app is rock solid and I love having it. I would have given it 5 stars if I didn't have that major issue creating my account. I just couldn't overlook it, especially given the lack of support.

There are a lot of security camera options out there and if you're looking for a solid security camera for your home or small office look no further! This camera is simple to set up and does have a superb picture in both day and nighttime situations with it displaying the parking area in front of my condo clearly both day and night. Mounting the camera is perhaps the most difficult part of the whole installation process, however, to me it wasn't too hard once I figured out where I wanted it concerning where I could run power. There is a template included along with instructions to make the process easy. The power cable is set up to be able to run through a wall or ceiling so you can get power to it and the camera does come with a decent length cable to fit most scenarios and uses a standard connector so you can get more cable if needed. It also has the option of using ethernet cabling with power over ethernet as well so if you're putting it in a place where there is not a good Wifi signal you'd have another connectivity option. The app is easy to use as well and makes the setup process easy. There's no monthly fee for storage as it includes a 16gb micro SD card for local storage, and you can save video footage to your phone or tablet. You can increase the storage by getting a larger micro SD card. You can configure zones in the image for movement detection so that when motion is detected the app will notify you. Overall, this is a great security camera and better than many others I've tried and will be replacing another I have in my yard with this one instead.
