For the price, it's not a bad camera to consider

I use a combination of security cameras at my house because I follow the mentality that you should never rely on one vendor for security. Since this is a public review, I won’t name names of other products I use, but my opinions about the Defender Guard camera are a result of comparing the camera to several others currently in use at my home. Compared to the other security cameras I use which are well hidden, Defender sticks out like a sore thumb against my grey house. Perhaps that’s a good thing so bad actors know they are being watched. The bright white power cable is also a concern so you’ll want to make sure you either bury it in conduit in your yard or you run it through the walls of your house. Mounting the unit is simple. Using standard size screws and providing a mounting guide sticker helped prevent drilling extra holes. I’m not a fan of needing a screw driver to adjust the angle and the direction these turns though. While the swivel mount is easy to unscrew to move the camera horizontally, moving it vertically or in my case having to twist the head to level out the camera required using a screwdriver. My other cameras swivel without screws so it makes it much easier to adjust on the fly. The Defender takes more effort to adjust once it is mounted. The quick-start guide provides enough guidance to mount the camera and install the app on your smartphone. Easy enough to do, except that extra parts are included in the box that are not explained in the quick start. If you look close enough at the bag of spare parts it turns out to be some type of water proofing system for the ethernet jack. I used wireless for this setup so I can’t comment on Ethernet overall. From there it’s scan a QR code and you are ready to go. The security challenge here is that the QR code is in plain sight on the device which could be a security issue. With the unit mounted, powered, and the app installed, once the camera is paired to the phone you open the app and you are off and running and this is where I start to see big differences between my current crop of cameras. I use an Apple iPhone so my comments that follow are in relation to the iOS version of the Defender Guard application. The mobile app has some great features. First, I use an Apple Watch and when the app sends a notification, it includes a screenshot from the recording that renders properly on the Apple Watch. I love this as one of my other products only sends a text alert suggesting which camera recorded something. Being able to glance down at my wrist and see it’s just a car or a person walking their dog instead of something trying to break into my house is very helpful feature. What is a big disappointment is that the mobile app is not written for iPad OS. The larger iPad screen is a great place to review security footage but not possible to do today. Defender really needs to fix this. In the app, after selecting a camera, there are 5 control buttons on the bottom of the video image. Pause, Unmute, and Full screen make sense to me, but the square button and the HD button had me confused. It turns out that if you have more than 1 of these cameras the square button splits the image so you can see up to 4 cameras at once, I don’t so I’m not sure why the developers couldn’t hide this feature and only show it if more than 1 camera is connected. The HD button stays greyed out and pressing it switches you to SD view which is fine but because it stays grey, I kept getting confused on if it was showing me HD or if I needed to press it to switch to HD. When you press it you get a second notification pop up telling you it’s changing to the other view, but it was still annoying. The playback controls are fantastic compared to a couple of other vendors I use. One major flaw I see with Defender is that it is using an internal 16GB SD card on the camera. Considering that 128GB micro SD’s are running at $32 retail, I would have thought they would have included a much larger card. Especially since you can’t offload footage directly. I would prefer to have the option to use either local storage options like a NAS or Cloud storage. After less than 24 hours of motion capture, the card is approaching half full. After more poking around in the app I found a Format option for the card and did that to clean up the initial day of testing. After downloading and reading through the User Manual, page 30 illustrates how to replace the card. From within the app, for some reason there’s no “Select All - Delete” option for videos but there is a Select All - Delete” option for Notifications. That’s a great thing as you’ll get hundreds of notifications a day with the default settings. The motion detection schedule is simple to use. These apps tend to assume you leave the house for work at a certain time each day and return around the same time, so you have basic scheduling capability to handle that scenario to automatically activate the motion detection when you are away. I love the “Set detection region” - the grid is much smaller than one of my other cameras allowing for far more granular settings. This is important to me because I live at the front of my neighborhood and I get a lot of car traffic. Being able to fine tune where the camera is capturing motion helps me avoid a few hundred videos of cars passing by on the street. You could also lower the sensitivity settings to avoid this as well. Overall it’s not a bad camera, but given my investments in the other cameras and the lack of iPad OS support, I’m not convinced I’ll be investing in any more of these.

This camera DOES connect to your network wirelessly, but you still need to run power to it. As long as you know that, and have a particular spot that you want covered by the camera that's within reach of a power outlet, then I think you'll be happy with this camera. The power adapter has about 8' on it, then they conveniently included a 25' extension cord, so you can be pretty flexible positioning the camera. I was excited to see it came with an integrated cable to plug into Ethernet because I thought maybe it would use power over Ethernet (PoE) so you wouldn't then need the power adapter. Unfortunately, that's not the case--it's just a regular wired Ethernet. I was pleasantly surprised that it came with an included 16GB SD card for recording video locally. Also, there is no charge/subscription for the cloud service which is great. So, if you're fine with the power cord, this is a great camera for the price. The video is crystal clear and the infrared illumination at night is both evenly spread and quite long range. It's very comparable to my $500 Lorex system cameras. The app was very easy to set up and link with the camera and the notifications seem to work consistently, which isn't always the case with some of these less expensive cameras. You can also schedule times for the notifications and also configure zones in the view for the motion detection. For the price, it's a quality camera with decent features.

I have a patchwork of different brand security cameras around my house and this one has the best image quality of them. Setup is pretty easy. Just download the app, plug in the camera and scan the QR code on the camera. Note that you'll want to set up the camera before you hang it, as scanning the code may be an issue once it's in place. Also note that the mounting bracket requires drilling screws into the surface you're mounting it to. If you're not comfortable with that you can probably find someone in your area to do it professionally. The included power cable is very long, so I was able to hang it up nice and high to get a good view (the lens is very wide-angle, too!) and then I hid the power cable under my siding. The confusing thing, however, is that this is an outdoor camera, but the power supply says it's not water proof. At the moment I have it plugged in outside but the power supply is inside a water proof plastic shield. If you don't have one on your outdoor outlet I would suggest installing one. They just screw onto the existing outlet. I absolutely love that the camera has a micro-SD card built into it, so all of the recordings are local and you don't need to rely on a cloud service to store recordings.

ok so for me, as nice as this camera is for your home security, I have to dock it for one thing that my other security camera has. this one, does not seem to have a speaker on it that lets me talk thru it. I have another camera similar (cheaper in price) that does the same things but I can also press and hold a button and talk and it will broadcast what I say. but picture quality when set in HD is crisp. you can get I think 4 of these and watch all 4 at the same time or select which one you want to look thru. my only other thing is that it does not really stand on its own. my other one can stand on its own or you can mount. this one seems to be more of a mount. for the regular asking price (100$) I do not suggest this one. but on sale for 60$ or less, its a good deal then.

I love the Defender - Guard Indoor/Outdoor 1440p Wi-Fi Wireless Network Surveillance Camera. It is the perfect surveillance camera for home or business use. It's easy to setup and comes with everything you need to get started in minutes. Be sure you have the necessary tools to mount the camera (screw driver or power drill). The mobile app is intuitive. Very easy to setup and use. The Defender camera produces outstanding video quality in all lighting conditions, day & night. I was very impressed with the clarity of the video. Even while being streamed across a wireless network, the video quality is crisp. The viewing angle is nice and wide so you can view exceptionally large areas with amazing clarity. One of the most amazing features of the Defender surveillance camera is the network connection options. You can use a wireless connection, or you can connect the camera to your network using ethernet. Both work exceptionally well. The Defender has an external antenna that can be manually adjusted to significantly improve the wireless network signal strength. I did not observe any lag, or clipping in the video when viewing the stream while the camera is on the wireless network connection. This is a great option for placing the camera outside or in areas where an ethernet connection is not feasible. I use the camera on an ethernet connection in my setup because my wireless network is used for services separate from the security network. I will be adding more Defender cameras to my solution in the near future and they will be on wireless connections due to this camera's spectacular performance on a wireless signal. The Defender surveillance camera has a built-in SD memory card slot making it extremely easy manage video footage. The camera automatically overwrites old footage if the capacity of the card reaches the threshold. Therefore, you don't have to change the card if you don't want to keep old video files. I highly recommend the Defender - Guard Indoor/Outdoor 1440p Wi-Fi Wireless Network Surveillance Camera. It's versatile, durable, and advanced to fit all of your security surveillance needs.

I live in a safe neighborhood but still wanted to install one of these cameras outside of our house just in case anything every happens to our vehicles or packages that are delivered. The image is clear and surprisingly it's good at night as well! Set up is super easy and straight forward. I wish it was wireless just so it looked a bit cleaner, but I knew going in that there was wires with this set up. The App for the camera is intuitive and easy to use. Highly recommend this product! Now I am just hoping that I catch some funny and cool stuff too! :)

I have been looking for a camera to watch over my deck and back yard. This is going to work great. The notifications are very timely and the resolution is considerably better than others that I have tried. The setup was pretty straightforward, but my phone had some issues reading the sticker on the camera. I would have preferred that it had been located on a separate sheet without the shadows and curved edges. You will need to download the phone app to use the camera. It pairs with your phone by sending a very high pitched cricket chirping sound. It wasn't a pleasant sound and I was worried about the dogs. It didn't seem to bother them in the least, so I was relieved about that. The wireless antenna works well and I haven't encountered any signal issues, even when mounted outside the house. It takes a great video and gives a live view. It's fast and very responsive. I really liked the snapshot feature. It does a nice job of capturing a point in time with extreme clarity. It comes with a very nice adapter and extension cable. You will not be limited with location due to the generous extension cable. I also liked that I had the option to use the adapter without the extension. I don't care for extra cords lying around. The phone app is nice and straight forward. It also lets you know when the camera is offline in the app. All in all, this is a nice camera. It is nice looking and powerful. The wireless feature is nice but also includes an ethernet plug in option.

Having been a consumer of Defender products in the past, I know that they are a staple of consumer/prosumer-level security systems. The 1440p WiFi Surveillance Camera will fit the bill for whether you're adding to an existing system or just starting out a piece-meal camera array. Setup is a breeze, especially with the freely-downloadable iOS app (there should be an Android-compatible app for those devices). Pairing includes scanning a QR-code located on the camera into the app, and then entering the SSID (WiFi name) for the camera to then connect. Once that's done, it's simply an issue of placing the camera in the appropriate location, being mindful of how far from an AC outlet that the camera will be. Connectivity for the camera was great, and we really appreciate the sound quality as well, as far as being able to pick up relevant noise from the area being surveilled. For us, since we already have a full-fledged video monitoring system set up at our residence (and since that system doesn't allow adding third-party cameras to it), we'll be using it as a separately-controlled camera. As mentioned before, since the camera does require a wired power connection, and I believe the setup comes with approximately 40 feet of power cable, there should be enough slack to handle most applications. And in the event this is not possible, the camera does have a dual adapter to allow PoE (Power over Ethernet) connectivity for even longer runs (there may be a technical limit to such a run, but I'm not familiar); many common security systems run power to their cameras in this fashion. The clear picture that 2k connectivity affords as well as the 2.5Ghz wireless connectivity (which does extend further than 5Ghz-band routers) is more than sufficient to handle the ~5Mbps throughput that the camera requires to transmit back to the app.

The camera itself works well, and is easy to install. Good quality view, including at night. But this camera is NOT wireless. It requires being plugged into an outlet. While you can access the footage over Wi-fi, using the term "wireless" has certain connotations, and this camera doesn't fit them.

it is sad to say, that in today's world... we can't be too safe.. cameras like this are a necessity. This one will make a good first camera, or an extension to another system. The setup is relatively easy, a little interesting at one point with the sound sendup, but other then that pretty straight forward. One BIG mis on this camera, it runs on the 2.4ghz wifi network. it may require you to get another router, that can be placed closer to your camera to get solid connection. However, you do have an option to hard-wire the camera (ethernet cable). But it doesn't look like it support Power over ethernet (POE). So you would need to run two wires One BIG gain on this camera, no service plan. The video is stored locally on an SD chip, but can be accessed via the internet. Picture quality is pretty good, and should serve just about everyone's purpose. General installation is easy shouldn't take much time or tools. So for the price, you get great value with this camera, and some sanity and security

As a person who lives alone, this camera is a welcomed addition to my home because securing the home front is of top priority to me. The installation of this unit is easy as a Phillips screw driver and drill are needed and from there, you’re good to go. As an Android user, I installed the app to my cell phone. I had my neighbor help me due to the placement of the device outdoors was high. I truly like the clarity of the device as it provides a clear picture. Additionally, knowing that I am receiving continuous recording is indeed a welcomed asset along with peace of mind that my home is secure. I highly recommend this unit as it is easy to install and have robust features in the securing of one’s home. Also, there aren’t any monitoring fees associated with this unit.

I love the whole home security and the connected world that we live in today. What I don't like is that I need a device to hook to this that hooks to that that connects with this and I need to buy a monthly subscription to. This eliminates all that. Simple hookup, simple setup, connects to the Wi-Fi, connect to the phone, great speed and connectability. Nothing but upside. Everything you need without all of the crazy hassle. Pick one up as soon as possible. Oh make sure and hook to your two gigahertz connection and not your 5 gigahertz connection on your Wi-Fi.

This is a really nice security camera! It was incredibly easy to install once I planned where I wanted it. This is compatible with WIFI but the camera isn't wireless. The power wire is incredibly long and a 50' extension wire is included. The app setup was easy and the camera linked up to WIFI pretty seamlessly. I can see notifications being an issue, but there are options in the app to limit notifications. I set mine up to notify me during the hours I'm usually not home. I really like this camera and will be purchasing more to link with this one!

What a perfect name for this camera. As even at night, I can see anyone trying to come onto my property. Setup was a breeze, just download the app and scan in the QR code to link things up. Very good connection via wifi. The picture qualitty is amazing! Ok, so I knocked one star off as I am kind of torn. It is stated to be "wireless" but, it really isn't in as far as there is a power cord. Albeit a very VERYlong (40-50ft) power cord. I had no problems connecting it and then dropping the power cord and mounting the cord so it runs directly under my deck (and out of sight). The camera comes with a 16gb memory card. Once the card is full, it will start over and write over the previous data. If you don't want that to happen you can upgrade to a 128gb card. You can pick a particular "zone" in the video stream to have the cam monitor. This is particularly usefull if you only want for it to notify you, if say, there is movement by a gate/door/etc. The cam is "in the elements" an with the IP67 rating, I am confident it will do fine "living" outside - guarding and defending. The best part is the price. For everything that it does, I could totally see this product going for 2-3x more than what it sells for right now. This camera is TOTAL value for what you pay. And I think every homeowner should have at least 2-3 of these on their property (or more!)

Just received this camera yesterday and I must say that I love it. Very simple and easy to use. Installing the camera was easy and it came at the right time. Installed on my back porch and catch whether there's a bear out back or someone prowling around my property at night. Inside the box along with the camera (with preinstalled 16gb micro SD card), is the camera's power cord and extension power cord cable, mounting hardware and Ethernet cable shield. Connecting the power cord was simple and it powered right up. Next you have to download, install, and create an account with the Defender app. I made the mistake of downloading, installing, and creating an account under the wrong app for this company as I noticed that they have at least 2 apps in the app store. I knew this after trying to scan the QR Code on the back of the camera to get it to register. Went back a read the documentation and noticed that it was the wrong app (but same company). So that was user error. Finally after getting the right app downloaded and installed and signed up, the app to me seemed a little clunky in that there's a too many steps to take in order to pull up the camera footage right away. I've tested other camera apps and camera setups that as soon as you open the app up the footage is right there with no other steps necessary. So it takes some getting used to but I must say, the clarity and sound of the footage is amazing. For it's low price, I would recommend this to anyone looking to localize a specific area to keep watch on. It may get a little pricey depending on what your budget is to buy several of these cameras to outfit your entire house, whether inside or out. However, this is an amazing camera nonetheless.

The Defender Guard camera is a nice addition to a home security suite: very good image/video quality (even in night vision mode), reliable mobile app for remote surveillance, and a pretty tough shell with strong mounting surfaces. It is pretty easily aimed, and stays that way. The only disappointment is that it doesn't integrate with the Apple Home suite. It would be nice to be able to have all security and automation devices together so that a home security plan can be accomplished without bouncing around between software applications or worse, having to write everything down. The unit doesn't have a light on it (like my Arlo camera), but at least it has very good night vision. Overall, it is a very good piece of hardware with easy-to-use supporting software. Too bad it doesn't play well with others.

Easy set up right out of the box and no monthly fees. The video quality is very good (2K resolution). If you plan on using it outdoors make sure that you have a strong WIFI signal because prior to me upgrading my house WIFI, my laptop and TV signals would be intermittent. If you are looking for an easy to use and set up outdoor/indoor camera this would be a great choice.
