Overall I am happy just small questionable stuff.

So I got this laptop open box for 950$ rather than 1200$. I was wondering why would the previous customer return this laptop. The first day I notice it was booting slow for a computer with a SSD. Long story short, The OS was installed on the HDD and the SSD was unallocated. This wasn't much of a problem for me since my field of work is I.T , but I could understand why a customer that is not tech savvy would return this laptop. Also the 1tb HDD is 5400rpm. Come on Dell!!! You know that gamers are using that 7200rpm HDD. But this also is not a big deal for me because I got this for a discounted price, I can easily buy a Western Digital 1tb 2.5 HDD 7200rpm for around 60$. Other than that, This is a great laptop for gaming on the go.

I have purchased several of these laptops for work and I really like them. To get i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, with SSD + HDD for quick boot and all for basically $1k that is a pretty good bargain. Plus it is a sleek looking laptop. I will be buying more of them.

I bought this laptop to replace my current laptop and to get a laptop that I could use for gaming. Prior to this I had never owned a Dell laptop; only Asus or HP. The initial Windows 10 setup was a breeze. The boot up time to the Windows screen is maybe 10-15 secs. I use this primarily to play games: MMORPG’s such as WOW and Steam related games. I am at max graphics settings on most everything and have no slow down issues. The only concern I have is it runs a bit hot to the touch after some extended use. Initially, I knew many gaming machines run hot so I just took it as a time to take a break. I might invest in a cooling pad to see if it helps with air flow. Otherwise, great pc for gaming and for doing others tasks as well. It can hold up anything I have thrown at it. A definite good buy! Check it out for yourself!

Decent Gaming Laptop With Impressive Specs

From what I've seen from this laptop so far, it is able to perform well under pressure from use for many intense games. I can't say much for the battery life, as I usually have it plugged in. My only complaints are that it heats up relatively quickly when playing games, but that is to be expected considering the gpu inside. Another thing I've noticed that I am partially concerned about is the small connector for the screen to the laptop itself. Overall, I find it is a decent laptop for gaming that doesn't betray that over the top look that gaming laptops seem to be trending towards, with a relatively sleek design. Not a bad option if you are in the market for a gaming laptop.

This is a nice and powerful system with outstanding graphics, however.... the fan noise when playing a game that uses the accelerated graphics card is way too noisy. You wouldn't be able to use it on, let's say, an airplane, without disturbing the people around you. I would have returned it for a quieter system but I didn't discover this until the initial 15 days had past. It really performs well but just way too much fan noise when the NVIDIA card is engaged, otherwise, it runs very quietly. The only game I tried is the 2016 version of DOOM. I suspect the problem is how the air vents are engineered. There are multiple little holes instead of larger vents which the air is forced through. I'll probably make this modification myself after the warranty is over.

This laptop has very great build quality. The base is made from metal and has almost no flex at all even when you really push hard on it. The included GTX 1060 is great for playing the latest games on high settings at 1080p. The only flaws I have noticed about this laptop are that the screen can sometimes be a bit dark in some environments and that if you are not using it while it is plugged in, the laptop can be very slow depending on what you are doing, and the battery life is not very good at all. However, if you are looking for a PC that you can sit down and use for hours on end, while using it lightly while on the go, this is a very great candidate.

I bought this back in May on a deal of the day for $1049. I have been very pleased with my purchase. I have since replaced the M.2 128 GB drive with an NVME boot drive which made a huge difference and last week I upgraded the 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD with a 1 TB SSD. The only other thing that I am wanting to do is upgrade the screen. There are multiple videos out there on how to do this. I use this with an Oculus Rift VR system and the G7 has enough USB ports to drive it without a USB hub. I use a USB Type C adapter to drive a secondary HDMI as well as provide a spare USB. I recently undervolted the CPU and overdrove the video card slightly. It isn't a top performer in any category but it performs very well for the price.

Must be plugged in. When not plugged in the laptop gets laggy and the battery drains in about 2 hours. Good performance for a laptop tends to overheat though.

As far as specs for what you pay, this laptop is a tremendous value. It’s comparable to similar laptops that cost $300-500 more. I have had no issues so far, regularly play Civ 6, PUBG, and a handful of other games, in addition to using this for work. I did immediately swap out the 1TB HDD for a high speed 256GB SSD, an upgrade that I would recommend to anyone - I don’t need the huge storage for having a separate dedicated SSD for games makes a big difference. Only downside - this thing is clunkier than it needs to be. The bezels are very big and it almost has the form factor of a 17” laptop. Still, a lot of power is packed into the thing... it doesn’t bother me.

Good value but needs a new BIOS update

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This system can be a super beast but you need to know how to make it one. The Dell BIOS will keep the CPU running at max turbo speed almost all the time resulting in extreme heat while gaming and even high temps while idle. For example playing Far Cry 5 on ultra will get you around 55-60 FPS but the CPU temp will be around 80-90C. If you get a program to undervolt the cpu and decrease its max clock speed to around 3.3MHz the system will stay nice and cool with no performance decrease. I love this laptop but I'm wishing I spent a few extra bucks to get something just a little better. There is no reason why the cpu needs to be running at 4Mhz while doing nothing on idle. The screen shot is the cpu on idle.

      LawDawg,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry that your system is running how but please keep in mind that even while your system is idle there may be updates taking place on your computer that sound like programs are running. If you'd like your computer to run cooler for you, here are some suggestions:

      Tips for Proper Usage:

      1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
      2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
      3. It is recommended to use the portable system in a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
      4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
      5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
      6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2uJ8AdG.

If you'd like to limit any fan noise that you're experiencing, here are some ideas:

Update the BIOS: An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer. You can also follow up with our Technical Support Team here - 1-800-624-9896.

This is a great machine for gaming, considering it's a laptop. SSD on boot means it will start up pretty fast. 1TB drive gives it some extra space, although if you are going to store games on it, you need to manually set the default drive as the 1TB or else it'll fill up your SSD. Graphics card handles all the games I throw at it, although on higher end triple A games, I don't attempt the extreme graphics settings. The 1TB is a spinning disc drive, though, so when running higher end games, the fan is going to be on the entire time, not a big deal if you wear headphones. Overall, this is a great machine to use.

This is an "ok" gaming laptop. The specs are there on paper but in use you realize you get what you pay for. Without going into detail about the processor, screen, hard drives, etc... let me stop you at the fact that the keyboard is terrible. The keys are so spaced out if made me feel like I didn't know how to type anymore. I bought a wireless mechanical Corsair keyboard to try to solve this but I couldn't live with using the laptop keyboard when on the go. I might have kept it if Dell sold the 6 cell battery that would beef up the battery life. Dell said they did not know if they'd ever have the 6 cell battery for this 2018 model and tried to sell me a 2019 model. This made me question Dell's ability to provide replacement parts and I purchased an Asus instead. Oh, and when returning from Best Buy I learned that if you buy a replacement from them first and return a laptop you paid cash for they will mail you a check in 7 days for anything over $800 dollars. The associate and sales manager that helped me failed to mention this even though I explained my situation. I'll still shop there because they have the best toys but if there's ever an alternative I'll take it. I just use it like I usually do. Shop online, pick up in the store. Very disappointed with the "policy" about cash purchases especially since I spend so much money there. Buyer beware.

I bought this computer to make my university works and game on my free time. About the works, it can handle heavy software like MATLAB with ease, everything goes smooth because of the SSD and never crashed on me (I have it for 2 months). About gaming, it can run smoothly on high settings some older games (Civ 6 and deus ex mank div) and newer but of lower investment ones (Vampyr). New AAA releases, like shadow of the tomb raider also go smooth, but on medium settings. With headsets on, I barely hear the fans, which is great. Also, I think it's prettier than most of "gaming laptops". I have zero regrets.

Overall good, but physical UI needs improvement

My overall opinion is that this is a decent laptop, but some UI (User Interface) improvements and a physical airflow change should be made: The bad: The keyboard keys themselves do not have a good snap action to them, which occasionally results in a missed key when typing fast. I have opted for a wireless KB/Mouse when at home to combat this issue. The backlighting for the keys shines through around the edges of the keys, which makes it harder to see when typing in the dark. The ventilation openings are at the front, back, and bottom of the laptop, but it still heats up quite a bit when operating. The airflow had not been channeled properly for good cooling. I also returned my first laptop because one of the fans was failed out of the box, and was grinding against something. Due to the angle and location of the rear vents, the likelyhood of an accidental spill getting into the laptop is increased. This should be redesigned. The display does not produce a true white and has a bit of yellowing to it when compared to other displays. Laptop cord is a bit short, and lacks good flexibility. It also has a straight connector into the laptop instead of a 90 degree connector which would have been an improvement which would have made it less likely to stress/break the internal PCB connection. The good: Hardware works good in terms of overall performance. The laptop CAN be set up for dual-boot with Linux/Ubuntu (Version 18.1 in my case) - If you choose to dual boot this, look for the dual boot instructional information provided by Dell on how to prep the BIOS for the install. It will make your life easier. Plenty of USB-3 and a USB-C connection make connectivity with modern devices easier. Physical build seems pretty solid so far. The laptop does not flex much when picked up by a corner. This will help it last longer.

Did a LOT of research on this hog. My son had been eying one to feed his gaming addiction and I also wanted him to get more acclimated with computers before they take over the world. My little John Conner is loving this thing. In all seriousness, it’s a solid gaming laptop. The price point is just about right as it does what you need it to do without going overboard and breaking the bank. Holds a great charge, and runs smooth. The performance is there but the fan is a little on the louder side as others have mentioned. Overall, no complaints.. It’s a Dell dude...
