Customers are saying

Customers regard the G7 17.3" gaming laptop favorably for its performance, large screen size, and impressive graphics capabilities, with many also praising the high refresh rate and RGB keyboard. However, significant concerns exist regarding overheating and loud fan noise, while some users also mentioned the limited SSD storage and the laptop's considerable weight. The build quality received mixed reviews, with some finding it solid while others did not. Despite some negative feedback, the price point was generally considered reasonable.

Unfortunately I had to return the first one as it did not work. Even the Geek squad could not get it to work. Had to travel a long distance to another Best Buy to get another one. This one is working fine.

On paper, it looks phenomenal. But the issues it has with over heating and the insane FPS drops during games makes this laptop unusable in my opinion. I tried everything I read online that offered fixes for this particular laptop, but in the end it wasn’t worth it. Especially not at this price point. If you’re doing to spend this much money on a gaming laptop, please find something more reliable.

The amount of bloatware from dell is truly insane. That aside the laptop performs fantastically once you get rid of all the Dell crap.

Great Laptop with specs and features but the laptop suffers from Thermal Throttling. On Warzone, my desktop with a 2070 would run easily 110-120 FPS. At the start the laptop would get 110-120 FPS but once the GPU warms up, I would have to put the fans on full blast to cool the GPU and it still wouldn't push past 65-70 fps on this laptop. Presentation and features are nice, but when it comes to actual gameplay, I suggest you avoid.

    Don’t buy for gaming

Don’t buy for a gaming computer. It runs hot…. After only 15 min of playing even 10 year old games fans blow at high speed and hinge of the computer is super hot. A cooling mat didn’t help at all either.. there so fixed on making laptops thinner rather than cooling. I would rather have a thick laptop that ran cool With plenty of venting space an a wander laptop that is to hot to touch and for sure wears down the components of the computer.

Loves this bad boy, highly recommend Only thing that I don’t like is the G button doesn’t always work so you can manually turn the fans on. But then one time I did an update and it magically came back. Then next time nothing. Only complaint. If someone knows how to solve lmk thanks

    Subtle Powerhouse

This is subtle design for a gaming laptop, which is much appreciated. It is sleek for a 17” laptop. The edges taper to the bottom, making it seem to have a smaller footprint than it does. It is somewhat heavy but that is expected for such a powerful machine. I like that most of the ports are on the back of the laptop. Great when connecting an external monitor and Ethernet, or dock. to keep the desk a little more clear. Another nice thing is that because of the weight of the laptop, you can easily open the lid with one hand. I like the feel of the keyboard, but the bottom row of arrows is lower than my other keyboards, which takes some getting used to. The trackpad is really nice (I think is is glass, or a really nice plastic) and large. There is also a function key to turn the trackpad off, but I haven’t needed it, palm rejection has been just fine. The screen is excellent. It is so nice to have a 17” screen for gaming but also for watch Netflix or other media. It is also very smooth at 300hz. The speakers are just OK. The webcam is OK (720p) and does best in bright lighting. The light strip on the front of the machine is a really nice touch. It doesn’t scream “gaming laptop” and really just provides a nice ambient light. I didn’t see any options to adjust the light, they might be there or coming in an update. You can turn off the keyboard backlight and front LED bar using the F7 key. I have the 16GB version with a 512GB drive. I believe it can be updated to 32GB. I have a thunderbolt drive attached with some games on it and it seems to work well. If you have an android phone, the Dell Mobile Connect app is really useful. Easy setup. Installing all updates once unboxed, including a really large Windows update. Was up and running in under an hour. The machine does seem to get warm, but not hot. While gaming, the fans have been constant and fairly loud. I usually wear headphones, so I don’t notice it, but this might be an issue for some. The charging adapter is 240W. I’ve been trying to use this with the Dell TB16 dock, and on paper it seems like it should work, but the laptop does not charge. This might be just a problem with my setup as it seems like it should work. Gaming: The 2070 graphics card is really impressive in a laptop. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, graphics benchmark showed an average of 94fps. In game, I didn’t see any problems. Hades - I was able to play for almost 4 hours on one charge. Also, I have been playing this on Switch, and really impressed with the graphics and smoothness on this laptop. I even plugged it into my TV and played in 4K, no problems at all. Productivity: Edge feels really fast. Speedometer browser test was 120. Battery life is excellent, I was able to get almost 12 hours using mainly the Edge browser and a short Zoom meeting. One thing that confuses me is that this is marketed as a G series laptop, yet there is the Alienware Command Center. You can launch that using the G button with a triangle on it at the top left of the keyboard. I would think the command center app could be rebranded or something else to make it more cohesive. Windows feels very snappy in general, which isn’t something I’ve been used to. I wish McAfee wasn’t installed, but it can be removed. Other than that, there are very few additional apps installed. Opening the lid and the laptop turns on and boots up really fast, allowing you to get to the desktop in just a few seconds. I would recommend this laptop to gamers who want a more subtle design and a large screen, and also to people who want a powerful productivity machine and don’t might a bit of RGB lighting.
