Nice laptop I planning to use laptop for study and games. I want play any game and have a web camera for study. Firs I want buy a Asus roz but this laptop don't have web camera and screen to small. This laptop have 17.3 inches very good for gaming and study too. 2070 - 8 gb videocard can play any game. And ge force, I want build first pc but videocard all running out or to expensive. Here is full size 2070 max-p videocard if guy explain me right in best buy. Cs go easy, far cry 5 full settings. Dota 2, gta5, call of duty ww2 also good. 16 gb of memory, good better 32 but for real 16 anaf. 500 Gb ssd - to small Firs option upgrade inside, second option buy external ssd 1 tb ( what I use now for gaming). I read you can upgrade memory (2 slots here) and read this laptop can have 2 ssd, so it means you can put 2 ssd m. 2 nvme inside and upgrade memory to 32 gb 3200 hz for real ( will display 2900) For this price I recommend buy it Minuses : I don't real like how screen open and holes in left and right And corners laptop they can cut me. Also I liked a 17.3 displya with big rafresh rate a d ips screen, this screen do not damage my eyes like oled Mac book screen. I defenely recommend 17.3 for gaming and study He is havy little bit. Have good web camera. And also recommend do not have drinks around computer put little table around you. And you don't have buy a insurance. For 250$ Also buy a good mouse, and under mouse something it is important( becouse if you play on cs go, you need mouse faster move, with this laptop I on cs go on the top and hadshots always. And also I play on call of duty ww2 multi-player, way better than cs go Beter than msi because msi I use to have and msi after 5 months starting stupid or because windows upgrade. Msi also a big not a thin. Soft inside also good from Alienware. This laptop have 2 video to screen first hdmi 2 some small or type or something. So if broke hdmi in 5 years you can use second option. And I real like a how you can connect in the back connections If you don't know what need to buy go to best buy and take look on it Thats all so I have to go to play a games people wait me.

This is a very good laptop for the price. Upon purchase I had the Geek Squad put in a fast SSD and upgraded the memory to 64Gb. So now I would give the laptop a 5 star rating, but if you buy at and use it with upgrading the way I did it would be a 4 star rating. I also own an MSI G75 Stealth, which costs about $600 more. The MSI definitely has a better quality screen. I use both of these laptops for photo and video editing. When I put them side by side the MSI definitely has more definition is the face and skin tones which is imperative when editing and retouching faces. But if you compare them side by side and just watch a 4K video the picture quality is close but the MSI is definitely noticeably better. Of course, you get for what you pay for. As far as the speed (programs opening, processor speed etc..) this Dell computer is noticeably faster. Of course, I did upgrade it, so out of the box it might be a bit slower. Unfortunately, for most that are interested, I am not a gamer and have not played any games on either of these gaming laptops. I changed the Nvidia driver to studio drivers and my Adobe suite (Premiere Pro, Lightroom classic and Photoshop) works very well. The keyboard lights aresupposed to be adjustable using the Alienware software but when I accessed it, it was ‘greyed’ out not allowing me to make any changes. I was having some other issues with the dell software so I re-installed windows but I could not get it to work. So the keyboard, and there is a light below it on bottom or laptop, just glows blue. This is fine for me but I would like to play with it and adjust it. It got too frustrating. I bring this up because it’s a cool feature (on my MSI it was a little hard to figure some things out in regards to keyboard lights but it was doable and I got it to just glow white like I wanted, sometimes I have all of the crazy colors flashing because it looks cool, as well). I could not get the Dell keyboard lights (via the Alienware software) to work. That’s the good and the bad as far as I can see.

Laptop does run a little on the warmer side but most laptops with 10th gen intel chips run pretty hot. I wish they gave you the ability to undervolt the cpu. Just run the latest bios update and update all the drivers.Make sure to run the thermal profile in performance mode to keep the fans running and keep temps in check.Keyboard can get uncomfortably warm doing intense gaming but it's not too bad. The laptop is good if you can get it on sale. Pretty much no other laptop comes close to this in this price range. Plus your getting a full rtx 2070 max p which will play mostly all games 80 plus fps max settings. My biggest issue with the laptop is the storage. They only give 512gb which won't be sufficient especailly if you have a huge gaming library. There is a second m.2 drive bay but dell does not include the bracket to mount the second drive. This bracket is almost impossible to find. So your basically stuck with the included measly 512gb drive unless you replace it with a bigger drive. It's a real shame dell did that. Seems like an anti consumer move if you ask me. Most other 17 inch laptops have multiple storage options and they include the hardware to install more drives. Other than that I haven't had any real issues. I'm still contemplating on returning it because of the lack of storage and the lack of ability to expand on a 17 inch machine. I have second 1 tb m.2 drive and a 2 tb sata drive that I can't use.

Had this computer for about a week, and I plan on keeping it. I use it strictly for games. Purchased at a really good, sale-reduced open box price, which allowed me to install upgrades for RAM to 32 GB to and a 1 TB M.2 drive. Design is nice enough, but the whole body is very plastic, except for the trackpad, which is glass and works really well for a windows trackpad. It would also be nice if I didn't have to look at the uncool Dell logo lid both open and closed. Specs, display, and keyboard are great. Full 2070! Performance is a nice upgrade from my previous gaming laptop, which ran an 8th-gen Intel CPU and a GTX 1070 GPU. Ray-tracing performance on Metro Exodus with all other settings maxed is about 45-55 FPS and looks awesome on the 17-inch display. Everything you heard about thermals are true. This computer runs really hot. For some reason Dell engineered this thing so that the CPU and GPU share heat sink pipes. There are a lot of useful tips online for cooling it down, and I used them all. Thermals are quite a bit better than out of the box as a result, and throttling is reduced. Even modified, this computer still runs hotter than my previous machine but I am not getting any frame rate drops. At the price I paid, this a five-star machine. But at full price the plastic and thermals knock it down a star.

This is a very sturdy machine, well built. Sometimes, it tends to overheat even when not in gaming mode, but the two built in fans kick on to help cool the system down. I am currently testing the battery to see exactly how long it can provide power to the laptop before I have to charge it again. Based on the activity usage you are performing, will determine how long the battery will last before you have to charge it again, so far battery performance has been a little better than average, about (7 out of 10). It locked up on me a couple of times, but overall I am happy with the machine. - Robert B.

This laptops biggest benefit was also one of its biggest downfalls. Its size made working from it feel amazing; the screen real estate and full keyboard made this device very comfortable to work from. The device also looks very professional except the RGB bar on the front but this may be turned off. Overall this laptop is amazing and even sports 2 m.2 slots for upgradable storage. But the laptop faces one major issue; thermals. When I attempted to game from this computer, it generated so much heat it would blue screen. I could not even run Call of Duty Cold War for more than 20 minutes it seemed. Even though this is the case, it had great performance while it did run. My overall recommendation for this PC is find something designed for gaming if you would like to mostly game. This laptop would be fine for just work purposes; it even sports a TPM module, but at that point its not a great investment since its so expensive for that use case. The build Quality is also good but it looses some points on that thermal solution.

Cutting to the heart of the matter, this is a great gaming laptop. It's fast, the screen is beautiful, the keyboard is great (for a laptop), and the RTX2070 does not disappoint. There are a few issues, though. First, although it comes with two M.2 slots, there is a bracket that is required to mount the second drive. Dell won't sell you one. You won't find one online or in any store. Maybe you can come across one on Ebay from a scrapped G7 if you're lucky. I ended up 3D printing one. That's a pretty terrible support situation from Dell. Second, the screws that hold the back of the computer on (which need to come out to upgrade the SSD or RAM) are Loc-Tited in. One of them stripped and I had to drill the head off. Not such a good feature - the screws are pretty soft. Third, there is no charging via Thunderbolt. No way, no how. Thunderbolt can't deliver nearly enough power to run this computer. It's a small thing, really, but something that you should be aware of if you plan on getting a dock. Save your money and get an unpowered one. Finally, it should be said that this computer gets very, very hot when gaming. Fortnite, with everything set to Epic gives solid 60FPS, but the CPU will hit 100C, even with the fans running at 100%. You will burn your fingers if you touch the case just beneath the screen. Just be aware - it's what happens when you put that CPU in a small case. I picked up one of those laptop coolers with the fans in it and, while it didn't cool the CPU down, it did stop it from throttling back from 4.1GHz to 2.8GHz. Despite the drawbacks, it's a solid performer. There is definitely desktop speed in this laptop.

I purchased this laptop about a week ago and it was worth every penny. I was lucky enough to get it open box when the sale was going and saved a few extra Ben Franklins. It was in perfect condition. The speed of this thing is insane and it can more than handle what I throw at it. I registered with Dell right away and called them about the warranty. It turns out that is very good and they will assist to make sure you are happy with your new work horse. It took me a few hours to set everything up myself and I am in no way a computer tech guy. Not hard to to. Very happy I got this instead of a PC. For the money and what it does you will not be disappointed. As for the noise it is negligible and the heat it is not a problem as it is built to handle higher temperatures. If it becomes a problem call Dell to address it.

I bought this after I lost my job. My work laptop was a Dell so I was used to its functionality. I am not a gamer but I just loved this laptop when I saw it and I still love it. The backlit keyboard is amazing and fully adjustable and the set up was super easy. The screen size is great. Side number keypad also good to have. If you are looking for something portable keep in mind this is a larger screen and it also quite heavy. I don't think I would attempt to travel with this due to its weight. But I love it in every other way.

PROs - Just bought this on 9/20/20. So far its been good, fast load up times as expected on an M.2 SSD, games are running solid like Gears 5, Gears Tactics, Fallout 76, and Control. Good keyboard layout, dont need an additional monitor, just need this on the go gaming. CONs - personally i recommend getting a cooling pad at the time you purchase or ASAP, this device gets very very hot and your FPS will drop like flies, after benchmarking 3D Mark DLSS NVidia, the FPS went from 50 fps down to 4-5 fps, and on Gears 5 benchmark it was averaging 30fps. Overall : testing this beauty over a cooling vent in my home, i re-ran the benchmarks , 3Dmark without DLSS was hitting 40-50 fps and with DLSS was stable hitting 50-60 but highest was 75fps. Gears 5 improved and stable at 100FPS. Really all you need is cooling pad or better, to keep this system from overheating, then your FPS will remain stable. I recommend upgrading the current or secondary M.2 slot to at least 1TB or 2TB if you can afford it, games are massive, 512 GB isn't enough IMO.

Laptop will run very hot if you game with it due in part to cheap thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, Dell uses too much and the cheapest stuff they can get their hands on. Don't try to add a second M.2 because Dell does not supply the heat sink cover or bracket and they do not offer it for sale. Dell uses a tiny generic SSD and generic ram, you will need to upgrade if you plan to get the full potential out of it. For the price Dell should have used better components and included the hardware to add another SSD. As far as overall build quality, it is built really well and is pretty rugged compared to some of the other brand gaming laptops in this price range. Unfortunately this gaming laptop does not support XMP gaming memory which is odd, you are stuck at a max 2933 speed. This thing will play games but not right out of the box at least not without throttling. I like the 300hz screen and the design so I am investing in the upgrades to make it perform at it's full potential otherwise it would have gone back.

      Hello PCDJ64,

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear your G7 is not meeting expectations. To better manage system thermals, open the Alienware Command Center and select out of 4 different thermal profiles as well as performance output to your preference. These include Cool, Quiet, Balanced, and Performance thermal profiles. This will ensure system temperature is managed to your preference.

Keep in mind that our G7 follows 10th generation Intel performance design guidelines, which can lead CPU temperatures to reach 100°C to output top in-game performance. We fully warrant the product under these conditions. If you see CPU temperatures rising beyond 100°C on Alienware Command Center, please contact support and they will assist you accordingly.

      Best Regards,

Ok so here's the deal, I gave this laptop a 3 out of 5, why? Because I had some issues with it. First of all, the screen is just amazing. The 300Hz display is excellent, the overall build of the laptop is great. Here is where I had the issue. The GPU started to overheat and it would shut down and I pretty much had to restart the game. I had Dell replace the MB, GPU, and CPU and it seems to be working now. It was quite a hassle having to deal with all of this, so I suggest looking somewhere else, if you're going to get a high-end gaming laptop, otherwise, you might end up in the same boat.

      eddie4,

We're sorry to hear about the overheating performance issues that you had with your new computer. If you continue to have any thermal issues we'd recommend the following:

      1. Update your computer BIOS to the latest version available
      • Browse to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page:
      • Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
      • Under Category, choose BIOS
      • Locate the latest System BIOS
      • Click Download and save the file to your PC
      • Open File Explorer and browse to the location where you saved the downloaded file
      • Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
      2. Open Alienware Command Center
      3. Click Thermal at the Active Default Theme and set it to Performance
      4. Restart the computer
      5. Once the computer boots into Windows open SupportAssist
      6. Go to the Troubleshooting tab and click on I want to check a specific piece of hardware
      7. Click CPU under CPU Devices
      8. Select CPU Stress Test and click Run Test
      9. Open the Alienware Command Center and go to the Fusion tab
      • The CPU peak temperature should be less than or equal to (≤) 100 ℃
      • When under high stress, the computer's average temperature can be expected to be less than (≤) 100 ℃.

This unit is hands down the best mid/high range laptop I have ever used. Scoring much higher on Firestrike benchmarks (1800+) than other gaming laptops, almost reaching gaming desktop standards. You will need to do some work to get the unit set up, using the correct thermal/power/updates. Once set up, this unit is rock solid, zero issues and extremely fast. Display is amazing, again once set up. Color is controlled through the Intel Command Center, and does take time to get right, but once you do it is great. All games play at 80-300+ FPS, haven't hit anything that bogs the system down yet. Very recommended! PS. Most reviews online you will see for the 17" G7 will be for models sold directly from Dell/other retailers, they ARE NOT this unit. This unit was made specifically for Best Buy and has the better 2070 refreshed, not the MAX-Q.

I first bought the gigabyte Areo 15 ( 4k OLED ) with rtx 2070 max q and it was a great computer but it just wasn't for me. I always wanted 4k OLED in a laptop but since OLED's are prone to burn in I didn't feel very confident of its lifespan, and the screen wobble and razer thin panel itself scared me of it breaking at a moments notice. so I buckled up and exchanged it for this beast of a laptop which is surprisingly better in every way that my original purchase. the Dell G7 17.3 inch is literally an alienware laptop just minus the branding and replaced with DELL logos, aside from that this thing is a monster since it packs a full desktop RTX 2070 and latest 10th gen core i7 which makes it even faster that the gigabyte. the issue i had with the gigabyte was it was a thin and light so unless you where plugged into the outlet the CPU would downclock to a super slow 1.6 ghz which made the entire system and UI seemed sluggish. Opening anything from email to YouTube seemed like a chore for the device given it was 2 grand. This computer doesn't care if its plugged in or not in most instances the CPU is running at 4.15ghz sometimes it will downclock to 3.6ghz and sometimes it will boost to 5ghz but not for long, that being said the battery life is what I expect gaming laptops to bee off the charger which is sub 3 hours of use regardless what you are doing and gaming nearly kills this thing in 40 minuets if you dare. The first review was unhappy because of poor thermal performance and I have yet to find any issues with thermals, yes its a full desktop RTX 2070 so its going to run much hotter than any max q since this GPU is pulling 140 watts itself compared to the maximum 90 watts of the max q rtx cards. that being said with the aliennware software suit installed out of the box playing Red Dead 2 on ultra for 5 hours gave me a stable temp of 77 degrees for the GPU and 75 degrees for the CPU which is totally fine, its toasty but not throttling . Now with all of this out of the way the laptop itself is built rock solid and isn't all that heavy thanks to it being made of mostly plastic for the shell. now yes plastic doesn't feel as premium as a unibody block of CNC aluminum does, but its very thick and rigged almost like PVC fences its tough stuff and it has a slightly soft feeling to the hands which is pretty comfy when using for extended periods of time. the track pad is perfect, large and glass with windows precision drivers what more could you want? The keyboard is pretty good key travel is perfect but tactile responsiveness is a little soft but it more than gets the job done and the spacious 17.3 inch size gives room for a full number pad with non cramped arrow key directions. The display is VERY GOOD for IPS LCD, probably one the best ive seen, super well calibrated out of the box, my Color Calibration Spider measured 1.45 delta E grey scale which is excellent, SRGB is 100% adobe RGB is 78% and P3 is 81% so for LCD its very solid, and the icing on the cake is the buttery smooth 300Hz refresh rate which is best in class with 3.75 ms response time, so if you ultra competitive with first person shooters of appreciate very fast refresh rates this is display is A+.

I've read a lot of good and bad reviews. The negative reviews always seem to focus on heat. Heat is not problem for my use. I purchased this computer because I do a lot of solid modeling (SolidWorks) type. This computer is many times faster than my old computer. I do not game and never will so my computer is not running all-out 100% of the time it is on. Temperatures: When doing normal type stuff like office, email, looking at pictures etc. my computer runs between 110 to 120 degrees F. The GPU is not utilized at this point, at least it does not register on my gauges. When running my solid model software the CPU and GPU run around 140 to 160 F when rotating my model. While sketching and reviewing my model the temps on both drop to 125 or less. My rendering software (KeyShot) will puss the CPU temps to 190 to 200 unless I turn on the GPU. KeyShot will allow me to turn on and off the GPU. I always run KeyShot with the GPU now. The temperatures then average less than 160 for the CPU and around 170 & 180 for the GPU. This is only while rotating the models. If I'm studying my model for the next action the temps on both will drop under 130F. Summary: This computer is perfect for my use. It screams when I need it and runs cool when I don't. Sorry I can't speak for gaming.

The Dell G7 17.3" Gaming Laptop is both powerful and a great value. You get Alienware levels of performance in a more affordable package. The 300Hz screen is very smooth. Having an RTX 2070 (Max-P) card gives the G7 a little extra performance and FPS over the Max-Q versions in even a comparable Alienware laptop. It is nice that the RAM and SSD are user upgradeable. Of note, the fans can get very loud as they attempt to cool the laptop. Overall, build quality is solid. I am very satisfied with this laptop.

This thing is beast. Not too many RTX 2070 with i7 10th Laptops out there for under $1500. I got it for $1299 early March. With Ultra settings on CyberPunk 2077, I was averaging over 70 fps and got into the low 50's on certain areas in the game. The only game I had low fps in the low 30's was Cities Skylines with my city on max build and some mods, but most of the time the gme would easily run over 50fps. The laptop at times, runs hot. Set the Alienware fan to cool instead of performance.

Love the speed and love having a 17.3" monitor. First Dell purchase and use. It's a game changer (pun intended).

This is a great looking laptop, but like other have mentioned this computer does have thermal problems. Evidently its been an issue with the G7 for a few years now, even with all the bios updates. Reimaging the computer, reinstalling all the drivers. There's a few things that have worked for me. I bought a cooling mat that has helped some, but I undervolted the CPU 100mv on the Cache, CPU, and the IGPU. It has dropped thermals, by about a 5 degree Celsius while gaming. When I first started the computer up it would idle at around 50-60c, and heat up to 95c under load. For me thats super uncomfortable. Throttlestop has become my new best friend. When I'm not doing anything too strenuous, I can downclock the computer to its base clock of 2.6 and keep thermals right at 35C, while browsing the web or typing, and when I game I can now keep temps under 85c typically. Dell states anything under 100c is perfectly within norm, however at those temps its thermal throttling enough it makes the computer hard to use. My next step is to wonder if I were to redo the thermal paste with liquid metal, how much it would drop, but I believe that would void the warranty. If you are not comfortable enough with making changes to a your system, I would avoid this laptop. if your like me who is very comfortable with computers, and like to tinker. This would be for you. This computer is essentially a non branded Alienware. It runs all the same Alienware command center programs.
