Exactly what I was looking for!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love this laptop. It did take some adjustments initially. You MUST finish all your updates as well as update the BIOS. In addition to this you should adjust your power and thermal settings. Prior to starting a game you should go into performance mode, else the device WILL get hot. People seem surprised at this, but... its a laptop, its not a desktop with liquid cooling or huge heatsinks and fans... I don't see this as a valid complaint by any means. I do also recommend either leaving it on your table, or, if you want it on your lap, get a cooling pad. Without a pad you risk blocking the vents when it is on your lap, which can lead to overheating. All in all this laptop does exactly what I wanted it for and looks GREAT while doing so. Ive not had any game that Ive not been able to run on Ultra or at the very least High graphic settings, and as long as you follow the above instructions, that pretty much mirror the suggestions of all others who use this laptop as a gaming machine, while also taking into account that this this IS a laptop.

Excellent 17.3" Gaming Laptop with 2070 Max P
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great overall gaming laptop. Please don't get confused by Dell's website or other third party information that you find. This Particular G7 7700 laptop specifically from Best Buy does have the RTX 2070 Max Performance, Which is better that the 2070 super found in the MSI Ge66 Raider. From my testing. For Serious gamers and Tech personal, This laptop can utlize upto 64gb of Ram at max speed of 2933mhz. There are only 2 ram slots. There are 2 nvme m.2 slots for SSD, however Dell doesn't include the second thermal heat cover and the bracket required to hold the 2nd SSD in place. This is a very rare piece to find! The sound quality: can be extremely loud with the built in Alienware equalizer. Which for me is exceptional due to my own hearing loss. In Fact the sound quality and loudness beats MSI GE75 Raider that utilizes 2 giant speakers and 2 subwoofers! Thermal Heating: This laptop already comes with intel turbo boosting turned on, this in turn will cause the laptop to run hot. WIth web browsing and social media stays consistent at around 50 C, with turbo bossting turn off it stays cooler around 30C. The surface temp stays nice and cool as well. When Gaming, and Turbo boost on, it stays around 73C without turbo boost its down around 58C, and there is warm to hot surface temp in the middle of the keyboard, however its not noticably when playing games and is quite enjoyable. The above mentioned temps are only using the laptops 2 interal fans, I am not even using a cooling tray! I actually returned the MSI GE66 Raider 15" laptop with 2070S that I purchased from Best Buy during black friday becuase this Dell laptop was actually cheaper and alot easier to remove back cover and install 32gb Ram and another 1TB SSD drive.

Just too hot
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great laptop for the price (1,299) However when you consider that you will either need to turn off Intel's Turbo boost or set the computer to "cool" to keep it from throttling or burning you, you open up even more possibilities for low frame rates. I repasted the entire thing with Arctic Mx4 and while it did help it still easily runs up to the 90s and will ultimately throttle the GPU because it will either heat up or the GPU will create enough heat itself. Performance is still good despite my complaints but large houses in Valhiem will bring your FPS to the low 30s at 1080p. BFV runs well in the 100 fps range and at 80-90c. 40fps in Cities Skylines. The problem is at 1,299 I scooped up a Dell desktop with an i7 and RTX 3060 Ti that will smoke this and a Series X. If this laptop was $900 as it should be compared to Ryzen powered 3060 laptops (if they were in stock) running at @$1100, it would be worth it. I would just be patient and try to get a Ryzen powered laptop even if with an RTX 2060. You would have much better thermals and CPU for your performance. It's a shame because this is a nice laptop with a nice screen, and build quality. Dell just really needs to spend more time engineering the design to run more heat pipes similar to Asus's design that runs nearly double the amount. I guess at that point they just want you to buy an Alienware.

Posted .Hello Matt,
We are sorry to hear that your G7 is not quite meeting your expectations. There are a number of considerations we recommend for ideal usage to better manage system temperatures.
1. Do not place laptops directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern laptops, heat transfer can be an issue.
2. Using a laptop on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
3. Using the laptop on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
4. It is recommended to use the laptop within a room temperature of 32°F to 95°F with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support website, look up your system model, and open the user guide under the manuals link.
Keep in mind that our G7 follows Intel performance design guidelines, which can lead CPU temperatures to reach 100°C to output top in-game performance. We fully warrant the product under these conditions. If you see CPU temperatures rising beyond 100°C within the Alienware Command Center, please contact Dell support and they would be more than happy to assist.
Best Regards,
Anthony P.

Good performance/value ratio, love the big screen
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Good performance/value ratio. Just don't play triple A games in Ultra settings on this. This will overheat a lot if you do. CS GO -> no problem. About 300Hz -> you probably won't get this in most games as you may already know. But anything over 60Hz is a win!

Pretty good gaming laptop for everyday use.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As many other report runs on the warmer side but can be remedied with new firmware. But the specs can't be beat. Only downside is no windows hello ability. Not expecting a finger print reader on a gaming laptop. Battery life 2 to 4 hours off the plug have not really pushed for gaming just yet till I get everything updated. On just all the regular updates the laptop has gotten cooler running than in the beginning. Also the information on the 2070 max p is correct this is the full card. Not max q version. Has a second m.2 slot that I will be installing another drive in. Since it's easy to do YouTube is your freind. Makes it easy for those of us who can do simple things.

Revs Up and Down; External Hard Drive Recommended
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A machine that revs up and down like a truck depending on your usage; can be quiet, can be loud. Would have given it a 5 star if the storage was a full 1TB, but at 512GB drafting programs and (contemporary) games fill it up almost immediately. I highly recommend you get an external hard drive with this and install your programs to that. This way the laptop can commit to its efficiency. Alienware Command Center has a bit of a learning curve to it and doesn't always automatically activate (you have to open its program and remind it to work). Everything else is great. Crisp screen, good graphics. As long as you don't play a hi res game for a couple hours, it stays cool enough. But that's just how gaming laptops work.

Powerful laptop, but listen to the reviews
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this laptop with the intent of making it my mobile gaming platform. Prior to purchasing it, I read so many reviews that this laptop had overheating issues. I wish I would have listened to the reviews. The laptop is great. It's a 17" laptop with a full keyboard, and great specifications. The battery life is excellent, given the specifications of the laptop. It comes with a 10th gen Intel i7 processor with 16 GB of RAM, and a SSD 512 GB hard drive, plenty of what I need it for. Also, the software suite that comes with the laptop caters to the gaming. Now for the cons. On high load (aka games), the laptop has severe FPS drops after the GPU temps reach around 70 deg, and CPU temps of around 99 deg. Dell is aware of the issue, and has released a BIOS firmware update for the laptop. Unfortunately, all it does is buy you little time until it reaches FPS drops. Just for comparison, I played Trials of Mana, Jedi Fallen Order, Heroes of the Storm, APEX legends. All of them with the same issues. I updated all of the drivers and software without any improvement. I returned the laptop. Hopefully, Dell will figure this problem out. This laptop is great otherwise.

Posted .Dave,
Thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear about the issues that you had with your computer and that you decided to return it. If you are using another Alienware computer in the future we'd also recommend that you adjust the thermal settings using the Alienware Control Center so that they align with your intended usage. This should help with the overheating that you were experiencing even after the BIOS update.
If you have any technical questions in the future please don't hesitate to reach out to the Alienware Support Team: https://dell.to/2Inbc8F.

Satisfied With Laptop. Storage needs improving.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The computer has a very slick design and a light-up keyboard. The games on this laptop run smoothly. I'm very satisfied with the performance of this laptop. The only downside is the 500GB internal memory storage. If you're going to pay over 1k for a laptop. At least provide sufficient storage space for the laptop.

Almost great
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought used for around 1249. Great price for the specs. Dual channel, i7 and 2070 max p. The thermals though are a huge disappointment. Why I can’t change the limit of the turbo boost is frustrating. CPU temp reaches 100 degrees. I had to disable turbo boost in bios, which meant this thing ran at 2.6 ghz max, it’s base clock. Still can run games well but limiting it to this degree is fairly poor. To add an nvme drive, you also have to buy a bracket.

Great for college student
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's big and heavy but you get the payoff - very long battery life and a large working space. Got this for my son and he has been very happy with it now going on a month later. The 300Hz screen is fun to speak to but you aren't hitting 300 fps in any games. But it does really well considering it is a laptop. Good value.

Works well - loud/hot
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Works great! Other users are correct where it is quite loud and it does get quite hot. It doesn't seem like it has impacted the quality of performance, but it is not a quiet machine :)

Great machine once bios/drivers/windows updated
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Solid machine once all of the windows and dell updates are installed. When I first got the unit I experienced a lot of speed throttling and the fans sounded like the laptop was ready to fly away. After some tweaking and software updates, I can now run the unit in high performance mode with reasonable fan usage. Don’t get me wrong, I did experience blue screen errors in windows at first and the software updates failed a few times before it all came together. Since then, the machine has been totally stable and Dell has also released 2 system/bios updates to also address some of the earlier issues with fan noise and temperature control. If you have the patience needed to just update the system bios, operating system and drivers, you will find this a solid machine for the entry/mid gamers market. FYI, this thing has run every game I threw at it including outlanders and cyberpunk 2077 and it runs well with almost all of the bells and whistles turned on.

Price and performance are hard to beat
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall I do think this is a great laptop. It runs very hot, so hot I thought it may become damaged so I researched and found ways to limit how fast the CPU runs to help keep it cooler. This was not the easiest, nor do I think that someone should have to do it, however even with the CPU limited it still runs my games extremely well. My Desktop is an Alienware i7 9700 with a 1070 and it can handle everything the same (almost identical even). For the price I found it hard to beat, especially since I wanted the 17" screen.

Solid computer
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Solid laptop for both work and gaming - but not at the absolute highest levels - however if you want a top tier gaming rig, you want a desktop. The only complaint I have is that it rather loud when the fans kick in and the heat goes out the back and onto you lap - if you use it as a literal laptop. Set up and use is easy and bloatware - although annoying is not that bad - except for the McAfee programs. I would recommend for anyone looking to to work and also enjoy some intense gaming.

Unopened Christmas present (I know crazy)
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have not opened this laptop.. yet (it is 04 Jan 21 and so many days after Christmas... I know crazy... but work is work) and I have only used the floor model. But I used it extensively, maybe more than I should have (I’m sure they drowned that unit in clorox wipes after I left and purchased a new unopened box). I needed a power (RTX 2070!) laptop that was at least 17 inches (300Hz refresh rate), whose RAM and SSD storage can be upgraded and didn’t break the bank. I got this on sale for $1349! Thank you Best Buy!!! I’m gonna update this review if there is anything of note.... and there should be none. I know that it is a Dell and there will be bloat ware that I have clean up from the system (might just do a fresh reinstall).

Awesome laptop but somewhat hefty.
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got this for my programmer wife who runs lots of intensive applications, but does not game. It compares very favorably with my Alienware 17R4. Excellent laptop and well worth the price. It's a very powerful gaming laptop, with exceptionally high quality build and components. It's technically portable, but I would not want to carry this beast around to class or conference rooms. While lighter than a lot of laptops in the class, it's certainly not an Airbook or a Surface. It's a pretty hefty chunk. In summary, if you need a powerful machine for gaming or CPU/graphics heavy tasks and don't intend to move it a lot, this is a great choice. If you're looking for something to carry around everyday, I'd look elsewhere.

fast, powerful and light and easy!
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I replaced an Asus ROP with this computer, and the performance of the dell is great. It is much lighter and easier to work with. It's fast and smooth, with a great screen and the ability to see details. My only complaint is the lighting on the keyboard and sides does not stay on until you push a key and it's pain there is a reason I wanted a lighted keyboard! :) It's a pretty petty complaint though and I am very happy with the computer in general.
