Customers regard the G7 17.3" gaming laptop favorably for its performance, large screen size, and impressive graphics capabilities, with many also praising the high refresh rate and RGB keyboard. However, significant concerns exist regarding overheating and loud fan noise, while some users also mentioned the limited SSD storage and the laptop's considerable weight. The build quality received mixed reviews, with some finding it solid while others did not. Despite some negative feedback, the price point was generally considered reasonable.

Good, when it should be great

The laptop is beautiful, and the build quality feels great. However, even when idle the cpu does indeed get really hot, so during gameplay you can easily drop to single-digit FPS. Updating BIOS (1.3.0ci believe?) helped this happen less often, but for the price this shouldn’t be happening at all. If this laptop is in your budget there are much better options out there.

This is a really neat computer. My first gaming one too. It works like a dream. The only downside (if you can call it that) is that it can get hot. I'm unsure how much that can affect the computers health and I'm not confident in my skills to crack it open and make changes like some reviews say. Overall, it's a great laptop and now I can game with my dad at full speed

Purchased this to replace my previous Dell that was a good work computer and fair gaming computer. This model does both well. I don't play games intensely but I do play 1st person games and this handles them great. The fan isn't too loud when it kicks on and it doesn't get too hot for the amount of time I spend on it.
I needed the additional keypad for work and this was one of the few that had it available and also covers what I need in a nice looking package.
On the downside, I'm not as impressed with the 512GB SSD, the weight (heavy), or the number and location of the ports.
Overall though, so far, this is a great purchase

My new laptop is a beast. I upgraded the SSD and RAM and it's purring along with my 3D art software, rending much faster and multi-tasking smoothly. The larger screen (17" vs the old 15.6") makes a huge difference in eyestrain and visibility. Alot of other spects really rock, and DAZ Studio loves the GeForce RTX onboard video. Nvida's Iray rendering engine has never been faster for me! This'll handle my artgeeking hobby and the rest of my university classes like a champ. Oh, and the other great thing about Dell is they provide full service manuals, so an old geek like me can make those ugprades with minimal fuss! Would definitely reccommend.

This is a very fast laptop with a large and bright 300hz screen. I have read some reviews about dropping frames, but as long as you update the bios and and drivers, I have not noticed any problems with frame rate or excessive temperatures. In addition to the speed of the non max Q RTX2070 graphics card, the most impressive feature is the 17 inch screen, I have had smaller screens and I must say that size makes a difference. The laptop also has a Thunderbolt 3 port that I have used with an external SSD and a large battery. A second SSD can be easily added internally.

This is a nice laptop, but it does get EXTREMELY HOT! Not the best for gaming whilst on lap, so be sure you're able to sit at a desk. I wouldn't suggest using this for gaming while traveling either, as it's quite large and heavy and won't run at full power on the battery...
The screen is absolutely gorgeous and at 300hz the graphics are buttery smooth. However, it seems to be overkill, as the GPU can only push 1/3 of the FPS on newer titles... So what's the point unless you're playing older games or indie titles?

Hello Trihelix,
Thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear that your laptop is running a little warmer than you would like. Your feedback is sincerely appreciated. We will use it to help improve our current and future products. If system thermals are of concern, you can prioritize cooling by opening the Alienware Command Center application that came pre-installed with your device and select the 'Cool' thermal profile. You can view the full article here - https://dell.to/2XAULtU.
Keep in mind that our G7 follows Intel performance design guidelines, which can lead CPU temperatures to reach 100°C to output top in-game performance. We fully warrant the product under these conditions. If you see CPU temperatures rising beyond 100°C on Alienware Command Center, you are more than welcome to contact Dell support for further assistance.
Best regards, Wendy C.

This laptop was purchased when it was on sale ($400 off the market price). It was very well worth my purchase. The start up is fast, and the blue lighting that glows the keys, and under the front side of the laptop adds to the beauty.
I like Windows, and this laptop shines with speed, is quiet, and the 17.3" screen is critical for my work as a composer. The music software program, combined with the larger screen, helps bring the preparation for the music, that much easier.
Dell has delivered, and did so in a big way.

Plays everything I throw at it near max. One of the best spec to value laptops you can buy (when it's on sale.) Pretty dang loud when maxing games... Invest in a good headset.
Only downside for me is I couldn't get this to RAID even though it says it's capable. I can't ever get the option.

Very nice gaming laptop, with the usual drawbacks

Gaming laptops are an odd beast in general, since most PC gamers (like myself) tend to gravitate towards PC's over consoles for the sheer diversity of options available, and the ability to upgrade your system over time, making it many years before you'd have to buy a new PC while still being able to play the latest games.
Of course, the drawback to tower PC's is they have little to no 'portability', so going to a friend's house for some LAN gaming is typically not an option--at least not an easy one.
Dell and some other companies are getting around that, and offering nice options to people that want to game regularly but still have to travel for work, or college students that may not have room for a huge system but still want to play the latest games at the highest settings.
This PC is a great solution for people with those needs-- a high-end system that is fairly portable and can play the latest games with no issues.
The good things are plentiful--it's a really nice looking laptop. The keys are comfortable and backlit. On first use it powered up and started within a few seconds (man I love SSD drives) and was ready to start set-up for Windows. It had about 50% charge, but of course your mileage may vary. After that there are some very helpful proprietary programs from Dell that are worth installing. The Dell Mobile Connect and Alienware Command center both help insure the programs installed both on the bios and for the operating system are maintained. The Alienware Command center puts all your games in one place and can help tweak them--it also does cool things like 'prioritize' gaming so you don't have sudden screen switches for an e-mail or some other notification you don't care about. It also prioritizes your RAM for gaming over other programs that might be running, which helps have a very smooth gaming experience. I've used Dell and Alienware systems almost exclusively for gaming the past few years and this is one of my favorite features.
The screen is gorgeous (though I do wish they could figure out a way to incorporate a touch screen as well--this is almost standard in high-end laptops anymore and feels like it should be a feature here) and the graphics look outstanding.
I tried a few games out right away--I started with Skyrim at the highest settings--it looked incredible, but the game breaking bugs at the beginning of the game alas made it basically unplayable--no fault of the computer. I moved onto Crysis 3, which is still one of the biggest 'system hogs' out there, and it looked fantastic. I played it for roughly two hours and saw no drops in framerate and had terrific loading speeds. Doom Eternal at the highest settings had fantastic results as well.
Like most gaming laptops you don't actually want this on your lap while you play--it gets pretty warm. Nothing dangerous or anything like that, but the heat monitor I installed still read 99 C a few different times. I never saw any degradation of gameplay so the liquid cooling system is effective. This is pretty typical of any gaming computer, but is obviously more noticeable in laptop form.
Like any good advanced laptop the number of connections and ports is impressive--happy to say there's a USB-C, which should be required of all electronics anymore, as well as an HDMI out if you want to show the impressive graphics on another screen.
The speakers are better than typical laptop speakers, but they're still laptop speakers. You'll likely be using a headset anyway, but the speakers will certainly do the job in a pinch.
There are a couple of slight drawbacks typical of gaming laptops: 1) the system is heavy--7 lbs not including the power brick. It won't be very comfortable on a laptop for any extended period of time. The 'brick' is also pretty substantial, so a small laptop backpack will likely not be big enough for this system. 2) The SSD drive is fast and works great, but it's small. You will need an expansion drive probably fairly soon after this if you own a few games you like to switch between (Doom Eternal requires 50g by itself, not including any expansions--which is pretty typical of graphics intensive games). Not a huge issue since this is a typical drawback.
Of course, the biggest drawback is there really isn't much 'upgradeability' for the future with gaming laptops, but if you're considering this system you are likely already aware of this. One nice thing though--the RAM is able to double beyond what's installed. Normally in laptops this is pretty easy and manufacturer's place the RAM in an easy to access area. Typically it means replacing the sticks in the system with new ones, but it can be done at home which is at least one way to save a little should you decide the RAM included isn't enough.
As it is, this is a great gaming laptop that can get the job done and play the latest games for the foreseeable future without issue. Highly recommended if you're in the market for a gaming laptop!

Great computer, super fast, does get warm tho when using after a couple of hours of just normal everyday usage. Just wished the salesman would have paid more attention to what i wanted as this did not come with a disc drive, so had to go buy one after the fact. Told him I wanted one just like the one that they were out of stock on. This is close.
I cannot say how it works on gaming, as that is not wanted, I wanted it for work to be faster then my other 2 laptops.

This laptop is a really nice laptop. Quality construction. Stands up to the heat ok and the battery fies quickly which is why it's not 5 stars. I have a cooling pad for it but it still gets so hot the graphics begin lagging. Other than that, love it.

After seeing this in store, next to the 15.6" 4k version (which was on sale).. I almost bought the smaller version. I waited just 3 days and then the 17.3" went on sale. I put off buying a new computer for a number of years but after starting a new company and needing something way more powerful, I opted for this monster. Photo editing is a breeze, the keyboard and touch-pad are outstanding, and the build of the computer is top-notch!

I have had the Dell G7 7700 now for about a month, and it has been pretty alright. When it is doing great I am getting solid FPS on most games on Ultra settings. However, I have noticed the laptop reaching internal temperatures of 100 degrees Celsius! Especially while in G mode, when this happens any game drops to about 10 FPS. I have had to tweak so many settings, pretty much get a software development degree just to figure out how to fix this. Turning off intel turbo boost for the CPU in the BIOS very much helped. However, the problem will still come and go. I don't want to open up my laptop and void the warranty to put new thermal paste in, so that isn't an option right now. Any other ideas would be helpful...Thanks!

I do most of My gaming on console, but I also play a few games regularly on the pc. The graphics are good, clear and vibrant color. The only thing I don’t like is I use the keyboard when using certain programs and it sets to high up on the laptop makes it uncomfortable to have to reach across the laptop to type for longer periods of time. Also it’s pretty heavy compared to other laptops. Other then that. I like it quite a bit.

This laptop is a beast for the money. It plays anything I throw at it well and loads in seconds. The screen is amazing and it is upgradable. I put a Samsung 970 eco plus 1tb nvme drive in it and it is super fast. The best laptop I have had to date. The only issue is the mount for the nvme drive is not included and while only $5 from dell it took 6 calls and 3 months to find a support agent who knew what it was and located one for me.
