Customers are saying

Customers regard the G7 17.3" gaming laptop favorably for its performance, large screen size, and impressive graphics capabilities, with many also praising the high refresh rate and RGB keyboard. However, significant concerns exist regarding overheating and loud fan noise, while some users also mentioned the limited SSD storage and the laptop's considerable weight. The build quality received mixed reviews, with some finding it solid while others did not. Despite some negative feedback, the price point was generally considered reasonable.

I purchased the his laptop as I’ve always been a loyal Dell Customer over the past 20 years. Appearance: First off, I must say it looks good with the lighting strip which you can change the color pattern. The dark black color does seem to show finger prints more than I’d like. It’s not too bulky for a 17” compared to the older models I had. Performance: it’s fast and there’s basically no lag and the screen shows clean video. Windows 10: I don’t care for it. Far too many updates and pop ups (antivirus adds are annoying). Overall: a good machine that gets the job done but the jury is out if it will perform without issue for what I bought it for (backup for video DJ use).

Pros -Slim, super quite, thermal venting is excellent. -RGB underlighting -Screen is snappy Cons -Dell software likes to interfere with both integrated and dedicated GPU -Dell software likes to throttle down the CPU so running in a locked 2.xx state works best. -Setting for the Thermal Profile resets to "Optimized" on every shutdown. You want it on "Ultra Performance". Would give 4 stars but 3 days of my life in bios and testing wasn't a highlight. Go bigger and get the alienware or msi.

Amazing laptop, super powerful and exceeds every performance expectation... the reason I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars however is due to the ssd being only 512 gb and I don’t know why they even make powerful gaming laptops with such little storage in them.

This laptop has exceeded my expectations in almost every way. The value was great, the picture is amazing, and the speed is rly fast! I've played many hours on Apex Legends and although the laptop runs hot, with my cooling pad plugged in, I've never had frames drop in game. I was weary as I read many reviews of this happening, so long as you update the bios and use a cooling pad I'd say it runs great!

Computer runs very well, took a little optimization to run some bigger games like witcher 3 on maximum graphics but very manageable. It does get a little warm when running games and charging although that is to be expected

Terrific value for the price, if you can find one open box or certified. Zero issues with thermals, CPU rarely reaching the low 90s. The performance is comparable to my current i7 / 2080 Omen 17, for what it is. About a 10 FPS jump overall. The 300HZ screen is ridiculous overkill. You’ll never hit that with this configuration on any AAA game or any game you’d care to hit it on.

Great for the price. Fan runs louder than I expected. and 369GB of memory left after updates. Other than that, I've quite enjoyed it. It can play COD on just about max settings on everything.

I love my new laptop. Though I was hesitant at first due to the size and the heaviness, I find I prefer this laptop to my old 15" Sony. I am an independent insurance contractor so I was in need of a laptop with an excellent rating on performance and user friendly. The screen is the right size for employees to view and for my own personal use.

This machine will is not the ultra-portable kind you take with you on a economy class packed flight. But this beauty puts out performance comparable to a powerful desktop computer and will not melt. But it will get hot especially if you use it for cryptocurrency mining. This is a good buy--a machine without a bottleneck.

I have been enjoying my laptop with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, that says it all about the quality and speed of this machine. I connect an external superwide monitor to the Nvidia Gefor RTX and it flies! I upgraded it with a second SSDrive PCI! Yes PCI, it has two bays in total so I have two PCI SSD installed!

The Dell keyboard is better than others. The full size laptop, 17.3", is far better than the little ones. But the best part is the processor speed and graphics and SSD. I have tried Lenovo and HP but Dell has the best laptops considering all of the above. This is the best laptop for the price unless you want to spend a lot.

So far the computer Mostly works great. I have an issue with the sound. speaker on the right started crackling and then stopped working. the speaker on the left sounds dull or muddy with an occasional crackle. I have only used them for zoom calls so I am confused how they blew only after a couple uses over a few weeks. The computer itself works great. runs smooth and quick. played a couple games to test it out and seems to run smoothly. Just wish the sound worked like it should. Will probably take it back to get it repaired/replaced. Overall I really like this laptop. The speaker issue isn't a deal breaker for me but it maybe for some others.

Firstly, I just want to say I love how these feel when typing. Weird, but an important feeling when you love to write. It can handle having CAD, Civ 5, Civ 6, and Sims 4 with all expansions downloaded. I did have an issue where, if it wasn’t on a flat surface while playing, Civ 6 would freeze and I’d have to restart. The keyboard lights would also start flashing and wouldn’t stop until I turned them off. I think it’s an overheating issue—it gets VERY hot. I recommend upgrading to 32 gb and getting a better fan if possible. Otherwise, I’m very happy with this computer. It’ll be perfect after those two aforementioned upgrades.

Held out for a good while but I think it's status as a "gaming laptop" is contestable. In fact, gaming is what burned out my laptop. Still, it served me well while it worked.

I have been using this laptop now for about a week. Using this for video or photo editing, works great. The Killer WiFi card in it has a solid connection. It works with VR and plays games, just not well. This thing get increasingly hotter and hotter the longer you play. No joke, you could probably fry an egg on it it’s so hot. Also, if you plan to stream with it while playing, don’t! It gets a star ⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating because the screen is amazing and makes movie viewing really enjoyable with the 300hz refresh rate.

      KICKA55,

Thanks for your review and we're sorry to hear about the temperatures that you're experiencing with your new gaming laptop. Here are some tips to help reduce the overall heat of your system:

      1. Update your computer BIOS to the latest version available
      • Browse to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page:
      • Ensure you have selected the correct Operating System
      • Under Category, choose BIOS
      • Locate the latest System BIOS
      • Click Download and save the file to your PC
      • Open File Explorer and browse to the location where you saved the downloaded file
      • Double-click the BIOS setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process
      2. Open Alienware Command Center
      3. Click Thermal at the Active Default Theme and set it to Performance
      4. Restart the computer
      5. Once the computer boots into Windows open SupportAssist
      6. Go to the Troubleshooting tab and click on I want to check a specific piece of hardware
      7. Click CPU under CPU Devices
      8. Select CPU Stress Test and click Run Test
      9. Open the Alienware Command Center and go to the Fusion tab
      • The CPU peak temperature should be less than or equal to (≤) 100 ℃
      • When under high stress, the computer's average temperature can be expected to be less than (≤) 100 ℃.

Bought this on recommendation from my local store for my gaming needs. Loved the big screen and the neon lights around the base. Played League of Legends just about perfectly. But main reason why I returned this was it gets HOT. Within 5 MINUTES of use my wrists are burning up. Then after a few hours the bottom gets unbearable and using a cooling pad did basically nothing. Returned it and got the MSI 17" with same specs. No issues whatsoever with the heat.
