    Excellent Media Center Desktop

    Posted
    lrb1982

First, I really want to give this desktop 4 1/2 stars, but half stars are not an option here. So now, a good word about Best Buy. After I purchased this desktop, I left it for set-up expecting it to be ready in about 24 hours (may seem long, but I personally was okay with it). Well, the first one was pulled from the shelf, and no matter what Geek Squad did and despite numerous attempts, the unit would just freeze. Best Buy was great about keeping me informed, telling me my options, and essentially just did an exchange for another unit. This was set up in about twelve hours. So, kudos to Best Buy for excellent customer service, and I was so relieved that the unit that kept freezing never left the store before it was caught and replaced. Now for the unit itself. I was looking for a media center desktop, and being on disability I am looking to condense everything I need. This unit is more than up to the task. It streams SiriusXM with no problem, as well as Hulu Live TV and other sports networks with no glitches and limited buffering.. This unit almost seems to be built for the purpose of a media center for someone's home, and if you are looking for a desktop for that purpose, this model is the best value I could find. Personally, I wish it came with an SSD instead of the hard drive it does, but there IS an M.2 slot available to allow you to add one if you so choose. Know that if you do, you will need to do a new set up, especially if you want to run your programs on the SSD and use the provided hard drive for all of your storage (1 TB is plenty of storage). The reason I would take off 1/2 a star is because in streaming Hulu live, or some of the sports networks I subscribe to, the picture quality could be just a little bit better. If I am am about 15-20 feet away from my tv, I can't really tell the difference, but in a small apartment like mine, it is noticeable if I try to get closer (which sometimes, there just isn't room), and streaming through my phone gives a little bit better picture. So, either a slightly better graphics card or video card (whichever is applicable) would make this the most awesome desktop available in terms of performance and value. It still is quite an awesome unit anyhow!

    Great for the average user

This system is great for the average person that wants to perform every day tasks such as web browsing, typical office software, streaming videos, etc. The quad core CPU can handle extensive multi-tasking (the biggest selling point of this system), and the 8gb of RAM will suffice. Lastly, its small form factor will be convenient for setting the desktop on your desk. The integrated GPU can handle mild gaming, just expect to set your video quality to low/medium for a lot of games as it isn't the best. The only issues the average user may/will experience is the bloatware installed on the system that will slow down boot time/initial load time. This software may also take up some of the RAM which isn't top of the line anymore. Lastly, the hard drive pre-installed was low quality, and failed on me within a month. I had put an M.2 ssd in the system, so it wasn't a very pressing issue for me as I could just wait until my next paycheck to buy a new one for $40. I didn't want to use the warranty as it was not worth my time to save that money. Keep in mind, this is probably an isolated case where I received a bum part (which happens sometimes). Lastly, this computer is not for those who plan to add components at a later time. The power supply only has a 200w capacity, and is a low profile PSU. In addition, this system only has two PCIe slots (I think its a full sized x8, but don't quote me on that as dell isn't exactly specific, and the other is x1). The M.2 slot is a SATAIII M.2 slot, and does not support the NVMe standard, so such a drive would require an adapter. TL;DR. This system is great for most people, minus the bloatware and has a very small chance of drive failure. Don't expect to game, or perform more advanced video production tasks. If your intention is to do so, you may as well get yourself a bigger form factor system.

    I Love My DELL COMPUTER!!

My old DELL almost 10 years old decided to stop working. I needed a computer so I just went right in to get one. I bought the entire package with all extended warranties. This DELL is so much smaller, lightweight to carry, easy to connect, and clean. Its much faster, and can hold much more materials as its a 1TB drive. So far 6 weeks into the purchase I am extremely pleased with my DELL and don't know if I will ever buy another kind of computer. Make sure if you're plugging in any external drives, or devices you use the back USB ports. Because I couldn't get my SeaGate external drive to work for 4 weeks until the Geek Squad said try the back ports instead. It connects directly to the mother board and make sure they are plugged in USB and power before you turn on the computer. Other than no issues, so very pleased. Thank You Best Buy and DELL for putting out quality products!!

My nine-year old all-in-one Windows 7 Gateway computer finally bit the dust, and after looking at the newer all-in-ones, realized the quality had taken a serious nose dive. Then I saw this mini tower Dell. I compared it with the similar size HP one, and at first purchased the HP... what a mistake! I returned it, bought this Dell instead, and WOW... love it! Quiet, fast, runs cool, great specs, looks great and fits anywhere. And I'm also very surprised with Windows 10, also a great upgrade from Windows 7. Don't hesitate to buy this slim line Dell. And make sure to get a 27 inch Dell Monitor to go with it, they work and look great together.

Due to limited space in my home office this computer is just the right size. 8GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for ALL my photos and videos is perfect. Took a little bit of time to get used to Windows 10 operating system coming from my Windows 7, but only took about 45 minutes for me to understand the in's and out's. The Purchased about 2-1/2 weeks ago and so far I am satisfied with my purchase. The Best Buy Rep who sold me the computer was very good in helping me decide which computer to buy and the Geek Squad person who transferred all my data from old to new computer was great.

This is a standard PC configuration I choose for our work locations. As a Dell, I know the hardware is common and dependable. I like the bluetooth and wifi wireless options in the event I need them. The Core i3 isn’t the best performing processor, but for the money, it’s quick enough and dependable. I’ve installed about 150 of these over the past 5 years - with the same basic configuration (if with upgraded versions of hardware) and had probably 2-3 die; versus 30%-40% of competing brands in the past.

Bought it for the 8th generation i3-8100 CPU which is better than the older i5 CPUs. It would have been nice if it had an SSD drive, but instead it has a clunky 3.5" full size Seagate drive. It was really slow at first, 100% disk utilization, especially after a fresh reboot. After removing some of the bloatware software, it got a little better, but still slower than a 5-year old PC...It came installed with an older release of Windows 10, which was the main problem. Once it was upgraded to version 1803, it got much better.

      SUHD,

We're glad that your computer is performing better for you. If you have additional questions about how to get Windows 10 to run better for you, you can read our Dell Windows 10 page here - http://dell.to/2wMZqyx.

If your computer continues to run slowly we'd recommend running the Windows Performance Troubleshooter here:

      1. Close all open windows.
      2. Press the Windows logo key + X key on the keyboard.
      3. Click Control Panel.
      4. Click System and Security.
      5. Under Security and Maintenance, select Troubleshoot common problems.
      6. Under System and Security, click Run maintenance tasks.
      7. Follow the on-screen instructions and prompts to complete the process.
      8. Restart the PC.

Just starting to render video files for my youtube channel and wanted an affordable computer that would do the job quickly. The 8 gig ram, which is upgradable to 16, performed nicely. Small tower fit nicely in my small office area as well. The only thing I can criticize is the cd slot being vertical vs. horizontal. The speed of loading pages and multitasking with several windows open I thought would be slow, but again I was surprised with the performance in speed and processing my requests. A great buy for the price!

Over the years I have had Dell computers and have really liked them. This one is not the case. I purchased it to help with grad school. First off it is very slow. It usually takes about 5 minutes to start. It usually speeds up for a while and then it starts to slow down to the point that I am forced to do a restart. There are far better computers out there stay away from this one. I am not sure how it has had any positive reviews. Maybe I just got a lemon. Either way, this will be the last time I get a Dell. This dude will not be getting a dell, LOL.

My Mom's old computer stopped working so she needed a new one. I did some research and trust Best Buy to have great "stuff" at reasonable prices and guess what? They didn't disappoint. This computer is exactly what my Mom needed to surf the web, watch videos, play Scrabble and Bejewelled 3, email, and use Microsoft Word. This computer is able to do all the basics plus more. If you're looking for a simple computer at an unbeatable price then look no further.

I bought this to replace my old home theater P C, I wanted to install An SSD drive so it would boot faster. I looked at Dells online owners manual and saw the slot where I could put the card. That did not work. After much searching of the internet I found I had to get an adaptor to put in the PCI slot. That worked. Also it seemed to have trouble outputing video to the HDMI slot, but the PC input of my TV worked fine.Maybe it is my TV. Overall it is smaller then my last one which is good, I just wish Dell had been clearer on how to install an SSD drive

I really appreciate the quality of this Dell computer. It is a nice design and stands upright rather than flat so it takes up little room. It is sleek and attractive. My only complaint is that it does not have built in sound nor a microphone so you have to buy them separately. It is fairly fast and is reliable and I do not regret buying it although I wouldn't have if I had know that it did not include those options.

I was in dire need of a new pc. My nearly decade hp had saw better days and I went to Best Buy and a nice young man helped me. I told him I had zero interest in games, just wanted a desktop to help me keep my life organized (bills-dates-etc), and needed to be able to go online and check out pictures of my grandchildren, comparison shopping etc. But I did want it to be reasonably fast as I don't like waiting. This pc is for my home personal use.

Our previous computer started life as a Windows 7, then I made the mistake of downloading Windows 10. The computer struggle and was slower than Dial-Up, if you remember about that. This computer is 1/3 the size and weight of the old computer, and 100 times faster. Admittedly, my needs are Basic, and it handles my needs without a hitch. For Web Surfing, Email, Banking, and Data Storage, this compute is Amazing!!!

We bought this for internet surfing, word processing, photo storage, tax prep, etc. The most complicated game we will play will be hearts! We will not download movies, but we might watch a thirty-second cliip now and then. Also, we'll occasionally try to watch a live stream church service. After only two weeks, everything seems fine. We have a three-year service plan, just in case.

Purchased in October, 2018, and opted for this pc, at a promotional price, over an HP with SSD. Since I am retired I thought I could live with a slower system, for the price, but the repeated crashes are becoming a nuisance. I do keep multiple tabs open and it will try to restore, but even that has created problems.. The blue screen message is Stop Code Faulty Hardware.

This Dell Inspiron Desktop comes as an i3. Which might be a little outdated, but it's great for for every day use. It came with 8GB of memory which is great for most applications. It also has a 1TB HD which is more than enough room to store all of your files, including movies, pictures, music, etc. It's perfect for browsing, most applications, and some light gaming. It's small in size so it doesn't take up that much room.

Got unexpected crash (though it had good error handling mechanism by showing the issue and asked to reboot) three times within the first 20 days. Hard drive is noisier than other ones I have used. It was always doing something in the background. You could hear the hard disk is being read. Also, no speaker with this one, found out later.

      Scott,

We're sorry to hear about the crashes that you've experienced with your computer. We're glad that you've figured out how to diagnose and resolve the crashes. If you'd like to have less noise from your desktop we'd recommend trying to update the BIOS on your computer:

An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer.
