Dell XPS 13 = Love It

I replaced a comparably configured Yoga (that died unexpectedly) with this XPS 13 and I'm really happy with it. 16gb RAM + 512gb solid state HD gives excellent performance. Blazing fast boot-up & shut down. Applications load incredibly fast. The display is excellent. I have a couple of minor gripes. At this price point it's inexcusable that this model isn't a true/full "2 in 1". The touch pad responsiveness is a little rough sometimes - as if the sensitivity fluctuates. Beyond that I have nothing but praise. Excellent battery life. Super light. Great performance. I'd buy it again in a second - if they add true tablet functionality.

Excellent ultra book for business purposes

So I decided to get this laptop to see if an ultra book could be useful for what I do. I mostly used this laptop for word processing, excel spreadsheets, coding using visual studio code and nodejs and the general off hours activity like streaming video and playing lightweight games. This has an excellent battery life if you set the brightness to about 40% and power saving mode. I've been using this laptop with wifi unplugged since 9 am. It is currently 2 pm and the battery meter is estimating another 2 hours. I also forgot to turn on battery saving mode, and have been using high performance mode. There have been breaks in between this time period with lunch and being away from my desk for meetings. I'd estimate I've actually used up only 4 hours. 6 hours of battery life total sounds about right at high performance. It can easily go to 8-10 if you lower the screen brightness and use battery saving mode. It charges in about 2 hours. The charger is very small and light, so carrying it around everywhere in my laptop bag is no problem at all. As for the build quality, this laptop is made of high quality materials. They say it's carbon fiber for the interior material. It looks like carbon fiber, and has a slight rubbery feel to it. It doesn't get dirty easily with normal use. The display is absolutely amazing. There are two downsides to the display. The first would be that since this laptop has the infinity display, the webcam can't be placed on the very top of the screen but instead at the bottom left, resulting in a very awkward angle when using the webcam. It's not even the bottom center. It's at the bottom left. I've got giant hands. People on skype usually see my fingers instead of my face due to the angle that's comfortable for me. The second downside of the screen is that not many apps scale up very well. If an application didn't scale well, you could end up having very tiny buttons on the UI, or very blurry UIs when they have scaled up. There are two minor issues that I have that bug me about the laptop. My Bluetooth wireless mouse (Logitech MX Anywhere 2) has disconnected from the Bluetooth on the laptop twice and I had a hard time re-syncing it to the laptop. I ended up having to plug in the dongle that came with the mouse and having the mouse connect to that before I could reconnect the mouse with the laptop via Bluetooth. This didn't happen with my old Asus GL551 laptop. Both of them were running Windows 10, so I don't think the OS was the issue. It's definitely something with the XPS 13 that was causing the issue. It was fixable though. My second gripe was that if I was pushing the laptop to the limit performance wise, I would often have a problem if I picked up the laptop one handed. At certain pressure points, if I picked up the laptop one handed, the display would cut out and come back a few moments later, and sometimes if I were playing a game, the screen would be windowed instead of displaying full screen. This really shouldn't be a problem if you play games on a desk, but I was playing some games on the couch and readjusting the laptop sometimes resulted in the screen going black while the music still played. My solution to this was not to pick it up one handed. Also, playing on a desk reduced the need to re-adjust the laptop itself. It's kinda weird that such a sturdy feeling laptop would have this problem. Lastly, if you're only going to play light games, such as Dota 2, this laptop will do ok on medium settings at 1080p. Do not plan on playing games at QHD+ unless they are VERY light games such as Ticket To Ride. Ultimately, if you're planning to buy this laptop, you may want to wait for the Kaby Lake Intel CPUs that are coming out soon. Those would be better than the current skylake for gaming. In the end, I'm probably not going to keep this laptop. It's a great laptop, but I play way too much AAA games to justify keeping this. I got the top of the line XPS 13 with the i7 and a 512GB SSD. In the end, I'm going to need something with a discreet GPU like a GTX 1070. It's a shame there's nothing that's low key and well built like the XPS line that has a more powerful GPU that doesn't look like a orange and red abomination from what a prepubescent boy would consider cool. Most likely, I might end up buying one of the new Alienware 15 with a 1070 and a 1080p 120hz screen. I figure I could turn off the fancy lights, cover up the few alien logos with some stickers or a dbrand skin if they make one, and it would look pretty nice and understated. But if you need a laptop just for business, doing speadsheets, word processing, and has excellent battery life, then this is the laptop for you.

I bought this open-box. It had no packaging or documents, just the power cord and the machine. I love the compact size, light weight, blazing speed and jaw-dropping screen. Unfortunately it looked like the original owner took an abrasive pad to the palm rest area and touch pad. I didn't mind the buffed appearance but it caused the touch pad to be very jumpy and unreliable. With a Bluetooth mouse it was just fine. PERFECT travel computer if you don't play 3D games. I ended up bringing it back and getting the XPS 15 with dedicated GeForce graphics. Also a beautiful and amazing machine but a bit less convenient to travel with.

Speed is amazing, graphics are phenomenal, and overall laptop is fun and easy to work with. The carbon fiber adds a nice touch as well. Only negative is the bottom of lap top gets really hot after long periods of use.

Great screen, very good performance, small and easy to carry, pretty good keyboard with backlight, good battery life, enough ports, including USB 3.1 C. If they could squeeze in a Blu-Ray burner it would be perfect.

A little expensive, but we'll worth it. The XPS 13 is a very stylish laptop in the perfect size. I've had this laptop for about 5 months now and no serious problems have occurred with it. The only cons I can think of is that it does tend to get hot/warm pretty easily. Still a great buy nonetheless.

If you're into premium windows laptops, this one is a must-consider. The essentially bezel-less screen allowing for a smaller and lighter form factor is both stunning and practical. Great connectivity and hardware overall. I'm a demanding user and this is the first laptop purchase I've made in years that really has delivered. Highly recommend.

Great display Great mobility factor, I use the touch screen while laying down and put the laptop on my chest. Cons: Track pad should be glass like macs. Computer has, and is known to have issues on sleep mode -- it stays on and can overheat in your backpack or if you put it to sleep overnight the battery will be drained. Quick fix: just put it on hibernate; takes a little longer to boot but its the only fix right now until an update is released. Last issue I have is the scalling. Some web pages and apps open in tiny font, I find myself frequently adjusting website zoom etc.

I had been looking to upgrade my PC to an Ultrabook for overall use ability and this laptop hits all the marks. It is lightning fast between the SSD and core i7 and I have really grown to love it. Although it was a pretty penny, this was the laptop I was looking for.

Shopped around a lot before making this purchase. I compared it to the HP, Acer, Lenovo equivalents. I loved the way this computer looks and feels. The rubber coating on the inside gives it a nice soft, warm feel. The computer does get hot. I've found putting the computer to sleep helps when not in use. Leaving it on can get to the point that you cannot hold it. I've never used it that long, but there was a demo one at BestBuy that I picked up that and felt like I burned my fingers. It is a very manageable issue and all the pros of the computer outweigh the heat. Highly recommend this setup. Fast with the i7 and durable with the 512g ssd.
