Dragon Quest Builders is a charming game with plenty of content to enjoy. There is certainly a place to build whatever you want, but for people who like to explore different areas and discover secrets all while having a directed path to travel through the game, this game offers that.
You start as the only person who can build things, but as you attract new characters to your town, you will begin inspiring them in various ways and that rewards you with new recipes and blueprints to craft various structures and items.
All in all, it's a great little game.

Fun building game + lots of nostalgia for DQ fans

Reminiscent of Minecraft, but with actual quests. The general gist of the game is that you're transported to an area and have to start building it back to its former greatness. This involves building specific things that villagers want, fighting off monsters, rescuing other important villagers, etc. The areas get progressively more dangerous -- stronger monsters, lava, poison swamps, etc.
Once you're finished with one area, you can be whisked away to the next. In each area, the requirements for buildings are often different enough that your old knowledge isn't relevant. This is probably the most frustrating part of the game, in my opinion.
The game also includes a mode called Terra Incognita where you can freely build whatever you want and make use of all recipes you found in the main game,
The Dragon Quest motif gives a lot of nostalgia to the game for some players too. You'll recognize all of the music by Koichi Sugiyama, you'll recognize the familiar Akira Toriyama style. The game also actually takes place in the same land as the original game back on the NES.
Overall a fun title if you're into similar games.

The instant I saw the trailer for this game I knew it would be a day one purchase for me. It melds the simplistic block style building of minecraft with the charming dragon quest atmosphere.
Building structures is incredibly simple, and the blueprint system makes it even better. I love that there's an actual story that goes along with all the building, and in addition, there's still a "creative" mode where you get free reign to build whatever you desire, however you desire.
Graphics are very chamring; colors are vibrant, gameplay is very smooth with no hitches and controls are very tight and responsive.
Without giving too much of the story away, it's a "what if" scenario, where the hero of the very first dragon quest game (dragon warrior in the united states at the time; remember the nintendo power promo where you subscribe and get the first game for free?) chooses the "bad" ending of the game. It's incredibly charming and fun, and very easy to pick up and play.
Recommended for youngsters and dragon quest fans alike.

As someone who was never really able to enjoy games like minecraft, I was suprised to get as much enjoyment as I did out of DQB. It features the same elements of exploration/crafting/building, but does it in a more goal oriented way that keeps you feeling like you're making progress towards something.
If you DO enjoy games like minecraft, you'll feel at home with the freedom given to explore and build. But if you're not, don't pass it up! It plays out *sort* of like a traditional RPG; with npc's, dialogue, and story.
Oh and the game is gorgeous to look at! Definitely has the dragon quest charm to it.

I've been enjoying this game a lot. I enjoy exploring the lands and building the town space you get in each chapter. I'm a big dragon quest fan, so its been scratching an itch. If you aren't into Dragon Quest, you might not enjoy it as much.

If you love what Dragon Quest offers and also like building games, such as minecraft you'll love this.
Fun story, witty dialogue, fantastic music and very fun gameplay.
My wife loves the game as well, she's spent over 25 hours making little villages and helping people.
Highly recommend!

Initially I was concerned that this title would be a generic rip off of other building games (Minecraft comes first to mind.) I couldn't have been more wrong. This Dragon Quest title actually has a strong story behind the building, something I didn't expect. And for that reason alone, this title is definitely worth your time.

This is how to do a building game! I love that the crafting and building is what makes the story progress, and there are also some battles along the way. A great mix of genres! This is actually my second copy, as I own it on Switch as well.

This game offers the strategy of battle, aspects of minecraft (mining, crafting, building), as well as an involved storyline. Really enjoy the way the story builds as well. Very fun and addictive.

Well, this was advertised as a mix of minecraft and an rpg. It does have SOME rpg elements, but honestly not many outside of what you get in minecraft (mining ores to make better items etc). There is no leveling system for your character, just a leveling system for your town. The battle system is similar to minecraft as well, just with a few special attacks thrown in. No magic system etc though.
It's a good game to waste some time on, but it is not as addictive as minecraft was even close. I also don't see any replay value here. One thing it does do is make you miss some of the old dragonquest games lol, but I'm not sure if that is really a selling point.

Minecraft with a goal

This game is addicting. While the building is not as big as minecraft, the quest and goals provide more motivation to keep playing. The few criticisms are that you have a limited space to build, you can't build every recipe in each chapter, and that each chapter resets so you're starting over. Even though you're starting over, each chapter offers its own challenges and is unique enough to not be repetitive. The free build mode is essential the main game without quests and you need to beat the game to unlock everything.

Taking the formula made famous by Minecraft and refining it in every possible way makes DQB a fun and enjoyable experience through and through. The only thing holding it back is your own lack of imagination. Build things, defeat enemies, do what you like!

This game is both a combination of the RPG and Minecraft genres, with beautiful graphics and compelling gameplay. It is divided up into chapters, where you basically rebuild a town while helping out NPCs with various quests that will unlock new recipes to help you build things. It has the classic Dragon Quest music and is a heavy recommendation for any DQ fan.

I never knew that the combination of Minecraft and a JRPG, well, arguably THE JRPG, would fit so well but it does. The colorful art, interesting world, classic monsters come together with the Minecraft elements of building, mining, crafting to make an experience unlike I've really played. It's not perfect and there's a couple of spots that can be a bit monotonous but this is a great game that has me excited to see what a second version of would be like.

When I tried the demo On PSN I had to have it.
When I got into the game itself I couldn't put it down until I had the platinum.
The game reminds me of a game like 3D Dot Heroes for the PS3 (a modern game heavily "inspired by" the NES Legend of Zelda) mixed with a game like Dark Cloud 2. Plays very much like the PS2 action RPGs in the early 2000's.
The game has terrain that looks similar to minecraft along with block placing, but that is where the similarities end; the city building aspect reminds me far more of the Dark Cloud series.

I got this game expecting a minecraft game with a Dragon Quest skin. It is a minecraft game with a Dragon Quest skin but done in what feels like the best possible way with a fun story. The controls are great and the visuals are cute.
The best thing about the game is it has all the pleasing building and destroying of minecraft while having a story to give you a point. You try to rebuild and restore the land defeating bosses as you go. The final boss is particularly fun because you can bring anything you've built to the fight.
The replay value is also quite good because it has challenges to complete for each chapter that unlock goodies for multiplayer.
I can't wait til the sequel.
