I’m writing this review as a regular home owner and tech geek. I researched this switch well in advance of making my purchase in order to fully understand the capabilities of the switch and how it would integrate into my home automation system. Throughout my home I use Lutron Caseta Wireless switches. The Ecobee Switch+ was installed in the garage to control the ceiling light. I knew the sensor in the switch would trigger the light to come on in the garage at night when I walk into the garage. That works perfectly. I was able to create an automation through HomeKit for it and several other lights in my home to trigger when I come home at night. That too works perfectly. The Alexa feature is simply a bonus. I’m certain with future firmware updates as Ecobee has promised, Alexa will enable you to do even more. Hopefully that will one day include the drop-in feature. A Lutron Caseta Wireless switch, which is probably the best on the market, works like a charm every time at a price of $57/switch. However, they don’t offer Alexa. Having that as an added feature on the Ecobee Switch+ makes it worth its price. I’ve seen a couple reviews where consumers were a bit disappointed with this switch, but in each case it seems they failed to research exactly what this switch is currently capable of before buying it.

Surprised by all that this can do. It literally is a fully functioning Alexa device built into a wall switch. It can listen for commands and respond right through the switch, including playing music. The motion sensor is very sensitive if you have it set up for that for your lights.

The concept of this switch is perfect. A light switch with Alexa, motion detection, and night light built in? What’s not to like? Unfurtunately this switch has a few flaws. For one thing it has no dimming function. Another issue is the microphone isn’t very good. It struggles to hear the Alexa key word, especially if music is playing. While not a fault of this switch itself, the fact that this switch is not capable of using Alexa’s drop in function dampens the switch’s appeal. The quality of this switch is top notch and I hope future firmwares will address some of the issues so I gave it 3 stars.

Ok, so I bought the Ecobee and this was included in the package. I don't think I would consider it for separate purchase. It is a nice switch, good quality, but for the cost, you could have 2-3 smart switches. The benefits of this over a normal smart switch is, it has a night light, motion sensor, and an Alexa speaker built-in. I like that I can have it automatically turn on a light when you walk by it. Cons: The speaker is less quality than an echo dot. It won't integrate into a speaker group with Alexa. It is expensive.

Works great with ecobee thermostat and Alexa. It’s synched with our kitchen under cabinet lights. Set up routine Alexa app. This is our 2nd Smart Switch. Love them.

TL;DR: The switch lack some key features, such as dimming and scheduling, but if you can overlook it, then it's a worthwhile product. Alexa feature works well. The Ecobee app is somewhat lacking with common features simply omitted. There are ways to get around some of the lacking features using the Alexa app or a smart home hub (more on that later). Once you have everything setup, it’s really convenient, but getting a dimmable smart switch along with an Echo Dot may be a better option. Pro: -Set up was simple -Speaker is decently loud -Alexa, motion detection, night light, and room temperature sensor (coming later) all in a small package -Works with Alexa, Google, Homekit, IFTTT, and Smartthings Con: -Not dimmable, surprising for a smart switch of this price range -No scheduling, can’t set time the switch will turn on/off or when the motion detection is active -Room temperature sensor that works with the Ecobee thermostat is coming at a later update -Missing full Alexa features such as drop in and calling and Spotify -Ecobee app control is barebones -Wink Hub not supported, which is weird since the thermostat is compatible. Work Around Tips: The Alexa app allows you to set up some functions missing from the switch and the Ecobee app. To set scheduling for on/off, you can set up a series of events under Routines in the Alexa app, under settings. To use dimming, you’ll need to use smart bulbs, and set up routines to turn on the switch, and set the bulbs to a certain brightness. I have three routines set to 100%, 50%, and 25% activated by voice. Installation was simple. The app walks you through step by step. Keep in mind that if you have a lot of wires or small electrical box, then it becomes more difficult to work with. I had to really cram everything in. The Alexa features well most of the time. A few times it had issues connecting, while my Echo Dot nearby was working fine. It was able to detect my voice even at low volume from across the room. The speakers are clear enough for speech but not great for music. It can’t do drop ins like an Echo can and for now it can only play music from Amazon Music. There are buttons to mute her and activate her, if need be. The other functions is where it gets iffy. A possible deal breaker is that it doesn’t dim. A huge oversight for a smart switch that can do so much. When you first setup the switch through the app, you can choose to use it for outdoor or indoor lighting. Outdoor allows it to turn on/off during sunrise and sunset, that’s it. As an indoor lighting, you have motion detection and a night light. With motion detection, you can set it to use light sensor and auto shut off. The issue with motion detection is that you can’t set a time for when it’s active. That’s one of the main uses of smart switches. If you get up in the middle of the night, it may wake up your spouse. Other times it will turn off since it doesn’t detect motion while you’re sitting still watching tv. Along with the motion detection, you also get a small nightlight. The Ecobee app by itself is somewhat barebones. It’s separated between outdoor or indoor, and only have the settings mentioned above. It seems counterintuitive to have features separated out like that, rather than just combine all of it so that it can be used to its full potential. In order to use scheduling, you have to use another app such as Alexa or one of the supported smart home apps. For dimming you’ll need to use smart bulbs, which defeats the purpose of having a smart switch. If they improve the functionality with their app, so that I don’t have to use another, then I think it can be a really good product. Right now those missing features may be a deal breaker for a lot of people. If you don’t already have an Echo in your room or don’t have a smart hub, then it’s worth a try.

Smart switch, a lot of potential

I was pretty excited to set up this switch and it has delivered on most of my expectations. The Alexa integration has become really useful and I'm looking forward to seeing the continual support and improvements that will be made over time. However, this switch also loses a star here because of the limited functionality that should have been released along with the device. As with all of these "Smart" peripherals these day, I think it comes in at a high price-point that moves this switch into a niche market. I was quite happy with the simple setup and Alexa integration. I did not like that I have to download the Ecobee app to set it up, but that's quite common in many products. Although I don't use the Ecobee thermostat (yet), I can understand why those owners are upset that Ecobee didn't include compatibility as a sensor right off the bat. I would definitely recommend this device, especially given its potential for growth. Pros: Easy to install with basic electrical knowledge Alexa integration and functionality Motion sensor Away sensor Light programming Ecobee thermostat sensor (future) Good sound considering size Night light Works with many smart ecosystems (Google, Apple, etc) Generally speaking, the Switch+ is an Amazon Echo Dot plus smart switch. If you're in a different smart system like Google home or Apple, this device is still compatible with them. Ecobee made this to have universal functionality, which is nice. I need to have a few motion light switches and replacing 1 with this switch might push me to swap them all. It picks up motion really well, sometimes too well so you might want to consider the range of detection. Since this is a smart switch, it will turn off the connected lights if you forget to turn them of yourself when you leave. You can also do your own detailed programming (pretty simple to do) and set the connected light on a schedule, such as a porch light. I really liked this function because it can be painful to perform on some hardware store switches. You can use the Alexa to control the lights as well, nice if you're lazy like me and want to turn off the lights when you're in bed/on the couch. I was pleasantly surprised with the sound quality on this device. It gets loud enough to hear across a medium size room and music sounds good. I would have liked to see this device has the ability to connect to a bluetooth speaker. Overall, I can't complain with the sound output from a wall switch. The night light is a great feature as well. I should also mention that installing this into your existing or new switch should be quite simple if you have basic electrical knowledge. Cons: Limited functionality No bluetooth Slow roll-out Large size may limit installations Price The Switch+ will get better as time goes on, which is far more than many smart peripherals offer. It is disappointing to see some important features, like Ecobee sensor, not available from the start. It doesn't matter to me right now since I do not use their thermostat. I would have liked to see more Alexa functionality such as intercom and whole-house music play. Maybe these features could be added overtime, but it would be nice to have now. Including bluetooth would have been very useful to connect an external speaker. The large size may cause issues when installing into an existing box. I was able to squeeze it into a box with two switches. Boxes with a lot of wiring could pose a potential problem. Lastly, I'm not too fond of the price point. Although it is not extravagant considering most smart peripherals are more expensive, I believe this could be cheaper. I won't be replacing switches by the dozen, but this is good for a few. In the end, this is a good device and would recommend it.

Easy to install and use. We use them particularly when away as you can control lights, fans, etc. also can use a night light. Can be used to replace a toggle switch by replacing backplate to support new configuration.

This product delivers on its claims. It is a basic smart wall switch with Alexa built-in. I installed the Ecobee Switch+ in my garage. I had wanted to be able to use Alexa in the garage to control the lights and the rest of my smart home, but I didn't want to have to install a light switch and an Echo Dot, and a wall mount for the dot, and then figure out some way of installing the Dot without wires all over the place. The Ecobee Switch+ was the answer. For the same cost as a Belkin Wemo switch and an Echo Dot, I installed the Switch+ and met every need in a single, elegant solution. An added benefit is the motion sensing function. I like that the switch turns on the lights when it senses that the room is occupied, and it provides for a customizable time of inactivity before it will automatically turn the lights back off. I recommend this product for any situation where you want Alexa functionality with a smart light switch.

It looks cool and the installation wasn't too difficult. It turns my light on at night and off in the day reliably. If you have it anywhere near an actual Amazon Echo they will both respond and the Alexa on the Switch+ will say something went wrong, it's annoying. I turned Alexa off on the Switch+ as a workaround, but I'm still a bit annoyed.

This Alexa enabled light switch does exactly what it says. Installation is a breeze if you are familiar with your household wiring, and even if you aren’t there’s always YouTube for that. If you like Alexa and voice controlled light switches, this product is for you. Can’t wait for the dimmer switch version to be released.

I would give this 5 stars if the temperature sensor was allowed to work with the thermostat to help set the temperature in the house. I would prefer to add this switch to every room in my home than buy switches and separate temperature sensors. Otherwise, the motion detector works well. The switch is reliable and hasn't been unreachable through the app or the Home app on iOS. Incredibly easy to install.

I prefer the c by GE as a smart light switch but if you have an Alexa system this includes Alexa and will give you an extra speaker in a room without having to purchase another unit. As a smart light switch this is a good product for those with a common wire electrical system and will save you money versus replacing all of your lights and a given room with smart bulbs
