Great smart switch but install can be a challenge
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It's hard to imagine anyone who would not be happy with the Ecobee Switch+ -- unless perhaps they had to install it. Once that's done, it works great, providing lots of functionality in a very small package. It's especially good if your house is not already populated with one or more of Amazon's Echo family since the Switch+ functions as a tiny Echo Dot and all the additional smart home tricks that extend from that. You can use your voice to turn on any smart lights you have in the house in addition to the one you just wired the Switch+ to. A microphone and speaker are built in and the sound is about as good as a Dot despite its tiny size. Now consider it also has a built-in motion detector and night light and you've got a pretty darn smart switch. As usual, these days, everything is controlled by a smartphone app. Fortunately, it worked well, stepping me easily through the process of connecting to the wi-fi network and enabling the Echo skill needed to add control of my smart light network. My only point of confusion was that there are a different set of built in functions, depending on whether you want the Swtich+ to be in inside light mode or outside light mode. The motion sensor, for example, only works on inside mode (It can turn lights on or off when you enter or leave a room, for example). To change it, go to the Smart Features menu and click the liittle "i" with a circle around it to switch back and forth. But about that installation. Hmm. Well it could be easy or hard, depending on where you want to put it and the state of your household wiring. The bad news is the switch must replace one that controls a light or outlet all by itself. The light or outlet cannot be one that is wired to two switches. And there must be a neutral wire involved in the location where you want it, which depending on how your house is wired, might also be a problem. Electricians can take shortcuts that leave you without one, even though it might appear you have one (a white wire -- normally the neutral --that really should be black). If you don't feel comfortable with this kind of troubleshooting, hire an electrician. Which increases the cost considerably. If you can get past that hurdle, however, you are in business. The Switch+ is a great addition to any smart home.

Great Features, worth investing in for your Smart
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I already own 2 ecobee thermostats (ecobee 3 and an ecobee 4 with 7 ecobee sensors). Wanted a motion sensor switch that I could control remotely for our closet, bathrooms and laundry area, i decided to try an ecobee switch in our closet. Install was very easy amd tool under 5 minutes. The app does guide you through the install and makes you confirm if there is a neutral wire in the box along with the fact the location is not a dimmer or fan or a 3 way load (good..) After installing, pairing with Ecobee app and HomeKit was a breeze and there were ton of sensors exposed on the HomeKit front ... Now its easy to not walk into a dark closet, the light turns on automatically and then turns off .. Alexa works well, even playing music or news was clear on the little speaker.. CONS/Shortcomings.. 1. Unable to use drop-in or home calling (this is a limitation on all 3rd party Alexa compatible products i own) 2. No exposure of the temp sensor yet to ecobee thermostat. Would love to use the temp sensor in the switch to control our smart vent in the closet.. (says coming soon...) 3. Price $99 is a little too much, hope the price gets better over time (need 5 more..)

Great idea, great implementation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I like tis light switch much more than I thought I would. On the surface, I like the idea of a smart switch with Alexa built in. But they got it right with the way that they did it. First, installation is easy. If you've ever installed a switch, this will be a breeze. If not, it's really not that complicated and their instructions are good. After that, registering and connecting Alexa took 3 minutes for me, at most. Once on, if you've ever used Alexa she works exactly the same on this. Anything I ask my other Alexa enabled devices, this could do. Range is good while in the room. she heard me from anywhere, including while she was playing music. I tested it from outside the door and around the corner just to get an idea of range. In the doorway she heard me, but as expected, around on other side of a wall she did not while speaking in a normal tone. If I raised my voice, she did. I did this to see if she would hear me on my way in the room, mostly to see how far away I could start speaking to activate her. As far everything else, it's Alexa in your room. It won't get too loud. At full volume it's not actually very loud. But it's not a speaker, it's a light switch. It's as loud as I would want it to be. If you have another Alexa enabled device, not necessary. You can get a switch with auto off capability and sensing if you walk in the room for less. The nightlight is a nice addition, but it's a bonus, not a deal maker. But if you don't have Alexa and are looking to get a smart switch, go for this. It works great and sounds great.

Great smart switch, Easy to install
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My favorite thing about this switch is that it lets me have an Alexa enabled device without having to have a puck or a speaker taking up valuable counter or table space. Also, you don't even know this switch is there until you say "Alexa...". I think these kinds of devices should be the standard when it comes to creating a smart home - unobtrusive devices that blend into a room. In any case, playing music on this is obviously not going to be as good as a nice Bluetooth speaker, but for everything else, this is just fine. I installed this in the kitchen and I have used it to check the weather, get recipes, do unit conversions, look up other things that have come up during conversation. It has been great! It works from a good distance away and is very clear and easy to understand. If you have installed any "special" light switch (like a timer switch or any other kind of smart switch) in the past, this is the no more difficult that than you'd expect. It is a tight fit in a standard switch box, but I was able to have the switch installed in about 15 minutes. Even though I would not recommend this for music, this is the best Alexa device on the market in my opinion - mainly because you can barely tell it is even there.

Will not automatically reconnect to WIFI
||Posted . Owned for 9 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Weekly I do a router reboot, and I have noticed my ecobee - Switch+ Smart Light Switch will not reconnect automatically. I have to reboot the switch almost every time after my router reboots to get it to reconnect. It is kind of making this switch worthless.

Great Idea with a few shortcomings
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Ecobee Switch + is a pretty cool gadget on paper, a voice controlled smart switch with Alexa built in. And it works just like it's advertised, which is awesome. Installing is just like installing any other light switch, the companion app has some pretty detailed instructions with videos but, it still is electrical wiring do be careful. I had a few hiccups getting everything paired, the app crashed once and carried everything to get stuck but, once it got caught up everything was up and running. The switch allows you to switch lights off like a normal switch and control then with Alexa his the built-in microphones and speakers. The microphones and speaker work ok. The microphone had a hard time picking up my voice from across the room. The speaker is what you would expect it if a tiny speaker. It is functional and clear but, wouldn't be good for music, which I don't believe is supported. You can check the weather and time and things like that which is also cool. It features a switch to turn off the always listing if you don't like the idea of Alexa listening to you and another button to manually start Alexa. I never had any problems with Alexa once I got thoughts started and the switch also works with smart things and Google Assistant. Do, you can control the switch with your Google home. Shortcomings --- My biggest complaint is that the switch doesn't support dimming. As someone who using coming a lot I find it hard to justify a light switch at this price point without dimming functionality. I also want too impressed with Alexa. I've gotten used to Google Assistant and had a hard time figuring out the exact phrase to turn the lights on and off. I actually had to change the name of the lights from "Dining room" to "Dining Room lights" because Alexa would not register the phrase unless I specifically named it "lights". I wish Google Assistant was built in also but, I guess that could always be done via software updates. I also had a strange yellow light that blocked on my unit for a few days that was really annoying, no idea what it meant but, it eventually stopped blinking on it's own. Overall, the switch does exactly what it advertises and it does it well. If you are looking for something like what this light does, you will enjoy it. I just feel is missing a few things for me to justify the price.

Semi-intuitive setup, shaky wifi, but promising
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I had to get our handyman to install because the location where I wanted it had some hard (for me) to understand wiring in the box. Once installed, the app guides you through getting it connected to wifi, but I would've liked it if it had scanned the wireless networks and let me choose the one I wanted to connect to. Once connected, the wifi seems a bit shaky (and this is in a location where everything else that is wifi connected works well). When the wifi is not flakey, Alexa seems to work well. The speaker is small and tinny, but I wasn't expecting much in that respect, so that didn't disappoint me. I'm hoping that some of these issues will get resolved in future firmware updates but, at least for now, the light switch works. At this point, I don't think I would recommend this to a friend until some of the features get a bit more polished and maybe a bit more functionality gets built into the device.

has Alexa but
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have an ecobee 4 thermostat and an Amazon Echo. They all connect and work together nicely but the switch is missing something I had really hoped it would have. It does not allow you to set a specific time for it to come on..I put the switch in a hallway at the base of the stairs. The setup was very easy but then I have installed similar switches before. The location prevents the light from coming on until you reach the bottom of the stairs. My wife gets up very early and it would be nice to have a scheduled time for this to come on before she leaves for work. Hopefully there will be an update

Does what it says it does
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this as the first piece of home automation -- for use to turn on and off a light with voice commands via integration with Alexa. The installation went well, taking about 30 minutes for the physical install of the switch and another 15 minutes or so to install the app and configure it. The integration with Alexa took another 45 minutes or so due to some back-and-forth attempts to get the configuration correct so that I could switch the light using voice commands. All works well now and I am liking it. There is a bit longer delay in waiting for the unit to respond to an Alexa command than I am used to on an Echo or Dot, but that is not a big deal. So far, so good...

Amazing smart switch, great value for money
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For those with an Ecobee this is an amazing add on - you not only get a smart switch (that can be controlled by the Ecobee app & the apple homekit/siri, google home, IFTTT and they say it can be controlled by Alexa, but so far the Ecobee skill just gives Alexa temp control for me). As far as sensors go the switch has a light/lux sensor/temp sensor/motion &occupancy sensor (I believe the difference has to do with 1 being used for detecting motion right now vs motion within the last 5 min as normal Ecobee sensors work) & they say it is sensitive to humidity to a certain percentage, but from everything I've seen it doesn't actually have a humidity sensor (or at least it's not enabled). The switch is setup using the Ecobee app, so no other apps necessary, where you select whether it will be used to control an indoor or outdoor light switch. This basically determines how it will behave when the sun goes down and it detects motion. When it gets dark there is a nifty little LED that points downward underneath the switch so you can find it & isn't invasive at all - and within the app you control the timer regarding when it should automatically shut off the light (when it's dark). The Alexa bit is, well, Alexa - it can do almost everything a regular Echo can do except you can't rename the call word (although I feel like I'm the only one that changed it to Echo...) & you can't use the 'drop in' feature which allows you to use Echos as an intercom - this is something that really bums me out. Because of this I don't think you can initiate calls from the switch, but I do know that when you use the new 'notify all' feature Alexa on the Ecobee Switch+ is included in your broadcast. It's an amazing bit of kit packed into a light switch (which is often on sale for $79!)

Great addition to SMART HOME
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you are in the market for smarthome switch then this is a great addition. I purchased to add to my daughters room and not have wires for echo dot or show on her nightstand. This is great for her room and serves as night light, mini speaker and alexa all in one device. Sound quality is good and not great but for the size it has good volume. Looks good with other smart switches. This is not a dimmer and for the price that should have been added to it but not a bummer for me. I had issues with connectivity and it will frequently loose connection and alexa will have trouble connecting or responding. Chatted with tech and they sent me another one after firmware updates this issue is resolved. You cannot dropin with other echo devices or play spotify which is not supported yet. Other than its a smart switch with occupancy sensor, alexa, night light inbuilt to it. Price is little steep but if you need clean install with all functions then you can get this and you wont regret.

Once Past Installation, A Nifty Gadget
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There’s a lot to like about this device and its associated app. Clearly there was a lot of thought and testing before it was released. Both the enclosed instructions and the app are designed to encourage the buyer to try the “easy” installation with a few hand tools. In print and on screen it’s clear that ecobee wants the buyer to be safe and feel confident about the installation with clear step-by-step instructions and videos. I am a very experienced DIYer and have installed many dozens of electrical boxes, outlets, switches, coax and other wiring in the past 40 years. I applaud ecobee’s concern for safety, but I think they are a bit optimistic about the ease of installation. First, one must find a suitable switch location. It cannot be in a 2- or 3-gang box because the unique cover plate will not fit. Second, there must be a white neutral wire, which one cannot assume is in all locations. Third, if a buyer is replacing an existing switch (the norm) the box may already be filled with wires and nuts; adding four more connectors can easily overstuff the box and the depth of the switch will compound that issue. (I’d suggest before opening the ecobee packaging that the buyer look carefully at the intended location and check the amount of space available.) Finally, the switch comes with slender wires which do not firmly fit into wire nuts when the other connections are larger copper. In sum, installation required a bit more expertise and a few more tools than the manufacturer indicated for a safe, enduring installation. Once installed, linking to Amazon’s Echo (I did not try other services) was a snap, as was the registration process. The features claimed by the brochure and instructions worked easily and well. There is a useful color ban on the switch that alerts you to the current mode (e.g., is Alexa listening?). Using the app to customize the functions was generally easy but required some patience to understand the functions and achieve the desired results. The built-in speaker is fine for simulated voice Alexa responses, news, weather) but although one can listen to music on it, few users will find it pleasurable. In sum, this is a nifty, multi-featured gadget that continues to add to the ever-growing connectivity-of-everything craze. While installation can be challenging depending on the current configuration of the box, most people should be able to master it with the provided guidance or can call an electrician. Once connected, set-up is easy and the uses varied.

An unbiased review
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m writing this review as a regular home owner and tech geek. I researched this switch well in advance of making my purchase in order to fully understand the capabilities of the switch and how it would integrate into my home automation system. Throughout my home I use Lutron Caseta Wireless switches. The Ecobee Switch+ was installed in the garage to control the ceiling light. I knew the sensor in the switch would trigger the light to come on in the garage at night when I walk into the garage. That works perfectly. I was able to create an automation through HomeKit for it and several other lights in my home to trigger when I come home at night. That too works perfectly. The Alexa feature is simply a bonus. I’m certain with future firmware updates as Ecobee has promised, Alexa will enable you to do even more. Hopefully that will one day include the drop-in feature. A Lutron Caseta Wireless switch, which is probably the best on the market, works like a charm every time at a price of $57/switch. However, they don’t offer Alexa. Having that as an added feature on the Ecobee Switch+ makes it worth its price. I’ve seen a couple reviews where consumers were a bit disappointed with this switch, but in each case it seems they failed to research exactly what this switch is currently capable of before buying it.

What I've been looking for
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have a number of Alexa enabled devices, I've used smart lighting in the past and while the experience has been good for each, I've felt the limitation in only being able to control specific bulbs. The release of the ecobee smart switch really allows me to control lights that may not be otherwise easily (or affordably) converted into a smart lighting device, whether through cost prohibitiveness of the smart bulbs themselves, or because of the type of lights. With this smart switch I've been able to really begin to take advantage of some of the smart home features I've been hoping for without any of the complication. Also, being that it controls a switch, it can really be used for any switch, even those that control outlets, which makes the application quite broad. To say this is a great step forward for ease of smart home control would be an understatement. A couple of minor things: You need to be sure you have a neutral wire in the switchbox. Fortunately if you dont, you can put it in a different location, hopefully you can achieve the same or similar control in the alternate location. The speaker isn't great, which is unfortunate because one of the selling features of Alexa enabled devices is the ability to play Amazon's music. Finally, you cant use this in locations controlled by more than one switch. But overall, if you're looking for a blanket solution to really control just about any lighting, it really is a huge step forward. If Ecobee can address some of those minor installation and usage issues, the next iteration of the smart switch will really be a great device.
